A few recommendations for others modding plastic pieces. Get a good file set and just slowly file your openings. That, or mill it if you have one. On holes, always drill with the part clamped rigidly. Also, build a hole guide out of wood to get accurate placements and straight holes. A hole guide can just be two pieces of wood glued or nailed together in an L shape with the desired hole pattern drilled into it refrenced off the inner edge of the opposite leg that will be used as your stop/edge guide.
@darren62022 жыл бұрын

Not bad. I did a similar upgrade a few years back. A few tips though. You can solder to the pin header on the underside of the board for the connection that need to come out on the top and it's much cleaner. I also installed the speaker mod that you said you didn't like. However what I did was to get a flat piezo and tsoldered it to the under side of the pin header and mounted it flat against the pcb with tape. It doesn't make much of a buzz sound but it makes more a click sound which sounds pretty good actually.
@JanBeta4 жыл бұрын
Oh, great idea to solder the headers on the bottom side. I might add a piezo at some point but as I said I don't really like the emulated sounds. There is a speaker in the other Gotek I show in the video.
@droses16004 жыл бұрын
Everyone, take note: there's an easier way to do the flashing without using a TTL. Simply buy (or make) a USB-A to USB-A cable (all pins attached), and plug one end into front of Gotek, the other into PC's USB port. (No need to apply power to Gotek during flashing.) However, you still must add the jumpers as Jan did (full details on FF website).
@droses16004 жыл бұрын
Also, as you're probably only going to be doing this flashing once, it's sort of overkill to solder in pin headers. (Esp if you're not good at soldering...) All you need to do is poke short pieces of straightened out paperclip through the two relevant holes of pins to be jumpered. They are through-plated so you should get a connection easily. Make sure the wires don't touch each other or any other parts of the PCB. Also remember to remove them after flashing is succesful.

I would like to have a firmware, that is capable of emulating all 4 drives (df0, df1, df2, df3) for Amiga with just one Gotek drive. I think HxC was able to do it with their own hardware. The Amiga selects the different drives by pulling SEL0 and SEL1 high or low accordingly. The firmware would just have to check SEL0 and SEL1 to check which drive is being accessed and remember the states of the drives (which ADF image is mounted, head position, etc.). It is definitly possible!

*Jan Beta:* I have seen photographs of an SD floppy drive emulator that not only has the face plate of a 3.5 inch drive, but also the disk slot. The disk slot is not meant for regular floppies. Instead, you put your SD card in a caddy that looks just like a 3.5 inch disk, and insert it that way. I really like this idea, and hope that whomever made it, makes a 5.25 inch version. I was wondering if you've seen these types, and what do you think? I don't know the status of the SD floppy caddy drive, but I hope it emulates disk access sounds.

And when you're done using the Serial-2-USB adapter to program your GoTek, you can use it to connect your Commodore 8 bit computer (with a user port) to a Raspberry Pi. This gives you more options than your regular WiFi modem, because not only can you access a BBS (by running tcpser on the RasPi which emulates an old dial-up modem), but you can also access RSS feeds, Twitter, etc. by writing some Python code that takes data from the internet and shuffles it over to the Commodore.

Useful mods! Personally I couldn't live without a piezo-speaker for step-sound indication. It's sometimes quite interesting "how" things are loaded. On my STs e.g. some disks (mostly demos) are loaded one side after the other, instead of double-sided. You hear that in the speed of the clicks. The LEDs I don't need at all, because on a side-mounted Gotek, like in the Atari STF or Amiga 500, they are quite useless. Here my Goteks in my 1040STF flic.kr/p/2dFroth and my 1040STE flic.kr/p/2iz3Rii ,the 3D-printed frame with buzzer-holder flic.kr/p/2iu1sYi I modified the rotaray-encoder PCB with straight pins heading to the back. It's just a cleaner cable installation. 😀

@@JanBeta yes, they're absolutly not realistic, but it "replays" the head-position quite good. Too bad there won't be the possibility to replay sampled drive-sounds in the Gotek. On some unmodded goteks, they left out two of the six front pin headers where you would connect two pins of the rotary encoder, so you have to solder these headers in yourself. Nice job, as you mentioned, the rotary switch on top of the gotek usually is not very useful. Next step wouks be to 3d print the montage plate to fit the gotek into your A500 fitting the oled in a nicevlittle case on top by fitting the four cables through the vents so you do not have to damage your case vy drilling holes or something....

This is awesome, Jan. One of the issues I have is that my gotek is installed in my A2000 but the slot for it is just a little too big. It mounts OK but doesn't look very nice. Do you know of a fix for this?

I'm presuming the reason you're using the USB serial adapter is because your MSWin or Linux machines don't have regular DB9 ports. Mine still does, so is that usable instead?
@JanBeta4 жыл бұрын
Yes, my current PC doesn't have a serial port anymore. You should be able to use any serial connection. Just select the appropriate port in the software. :)
@retrofriends4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Remember Jan that your adapter is USB to TTL serial. TTL serial is not the same as an RS232 serial port.

Lucky those TXD/RXD lines on the STM32F105 are 5V tolerant isn't it, you checked that right ;-)
@ingmarm88584 жыл бұрын
Lol yes thanks, it was a humorous dig from a patron. FYI the usb/ttl converter doesn't technically "handle the voltages levels automatically" it will just spit out whatever voltage it was built for (5/3.3/1.8v typically) and it is still up to the user to work out if those levels are compatible with the target hardware. The STM32F105 is nice like that with most pins being 5v tolerant indeed making it almost goose proof!

Hi, it will be better to Flash Your personal upgrade Gotek with the Other HXC firmware... to compare it with FlashFloppy firmware... Because, HXC firmware is the native development to use IPF files (From SPS) converted into HFEV3 format to play game like originals games without any cracks...for myself the best game sensation.🕹

If you have a 5.25" bay and want a really good sized OLED instead of those tiny 0.96" things, check out my printable case at www.thingiverse.com/thing:3820252 I designed this for my Emulator II which has the FDD on far left, so I specifically wanted a design where I could still see the display while twiddling the rotary encoder without my hand blocking the view.
@fourbypete3 жыл бұрын
I gave it a thumbs up because I didn't know you could do that. But, I have some criticisms. Mainly just too mush talking. Explain what you are doing while you are doing it. People can see on the screen what wires are going where as shown by the writing on the circuit board and the illustrations in the instruction guide.
@omfgbunder20084 жыл бұрын
I wish they would make these with an in-system menu program so I don't have to print out a sheet of numbers or remember which number is which image... That oled screen is too small
@shadowtheimpure4 жыл бұрын
That would be difficult to implement, as that type of functionality is outside of the spec of the original floppy interface. It's possible, but they would have to code software for every single platform (Amiga, Amstrad, DOS, Windows, etc) that the Gotek is used on.
@JanBeta4 жыл бұрын
You can add larger displays, too. And there’s options for on screen displays for some systems even.

Flashfloppy supports bigger OLEDs, and the name of the adf is displayed as text on the OLED.
This is a HxC Floppy emulator option since a decade : github.com/jfdelnero/HXCFE_file_selector The HxC firmware for gotek also support these file selectors : hxc2001.com/store/ And the HxC firmware for gotek also has the OSD output support to make these OLED screen useless :) (only 2 wires and a resistor needed :) ) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ2Ud4tug5J8gtE

I didn't know that, somebody pointed out you need the other ST software for that? Or does it work with the one I used, too?
@oliverochojski35614 жыл бұрын
Why even open the gotek? I use 2 cut pieces of paperclip and stick them in the holes without opening the case at all. Worked every time for me. Of cause you should use copper ones and bend them so they stick with tension. And you can flash the drive with a USB-A to USB-A cable instead of this stupid rs232-to-usb crap. There is a nice video of TheRasteri here on youtube showing this method.
@JanBeta4 жыл бұрын
I didn't know about the USB flashing. Does that work with the simple software I show or do you need the ST cube programmer? Also, sticking wires into circuit boards is not really something I would recommend. Although you probably get away with it for a serial connection like this.

My personal contribution about Goteks : with minimum FW 3.13a, with your gotek you can read Amiga, Atari ST, PC, Amstrad CPC original games with their copy protections intact in HFE v3 experimental format. Any of them !
@JeffHxC20014 жыл бұрын
personal contribution ? lol :)). Btw the HFEv3 doesn't support all the copy protections and for sure doesn't keep them "intact"...

@@JeffHxC2001 all the protections I tried weak bits, longtracks, overlapping tracks, they all work.
@JeffHxC20014 жыл бұрын
@dlfrsilver As the HFEv3 designer i can tell you that the weak bits emulation is not accurate at all from the HFEv3. Same for the variable bitrate (speedlock). You can't associate "HFEv3" and "intact" in the same sentence. This format is just an approximation to try to roughly emulate these protections, that's why it still in "experimental" state, it is far to be perfect...
