No one but the archbishop of sloth and Subaru could see the hands. However, they can see things displaced by the hands (water, dust, earth and bodies especially ), meaning their position and number can be estimated in a chaotic environment. Felix can heal people, or use those healing powers to wreck their bodies from the inside. At the end, he essentially did what he did to the merchant beforehand, making him an invalid.

That's not quite accurate. He basically made his mana run rampant, and Subaru would have died very painfully and slowly. However if he hadn't done that, Julius wouldn't have had the resolve to cut him down, and Betelgeuse would have run rampant through the town, with Subaru forced to watch his own body attack everyone he loved.

To answer some of your questions: - The Mabeast Julius was referring to in the beginning of the episode was the White Whale. - The White Whale is not Gluttony, but it is related to the Authority of Gluttony. - What Felis did in the end of the episode was he messed up blood inside of Subaru's body (since Felis can manipulate liquids). - The reason behind the blank letter is a massive spoiler for Season 2. - Julius was upset in the end because he tried to find a way to save Subaru without killing him, as he had already considered him a friend by that point.

a few fun facts .. 0) subaru stated that he wanted to Legit Marry both emilia and rem, idk why the anime cuts that out like bruh... he didnt reject rem at all. 1) if Ram still had her horn, she would be able to solo the whale, like defeat it without any help whatsoever 2) from the previous episode, the tree had Japanese writing on it, which said ""flugel was here"".... which raised the question of was flugel from subaru's world, and who brought him to the re zero world 400 years ago? 3) you only get forgotten if you die by the fog, the white whale could also kill you other ways and that's why people still remember the ones they lost in the previous battle against it 10-15 years ago. 4) otto went insane and pushed subaru out of the cart a couple episodes back because he went insane due to the white whale's screeches, it's not his fault at all....

One of the hardest hitting endings in Re:Zero kind if underrated when it comes to season 1 because of other great episodes like 15 & 18. The OVA frozen bonds should be watched before you start season 2 2:23 Julius was referring to the White Whale when he mentioned the Mabeast 2:50 how the white whale relates to the sins will be revealed later in the anime. Good for you recording in advance bc there’s many upvoted comments with stuff that’ll be explained in the anime but they’re telling you now when it’s supposed to be unclear in this point of the story 9:20 well certain things are hard to answer if confirming or denying something would give too much away. The barrier is for the Mabeasts in the forest they’re unaware of the movement of the witches cult in Roswaals domain 23:54 they made the tree fall into the pond so the water would hit the hands and thus make them visible since they do materialize in the physical. Later on Willhem makes a dust cloud with his sword so he can see the movement the hands create in it 34:26 Subaru had that dog in him even before Denji lmao 41:30 That’s one way to explain why Subaru was able to connect so easily with puck and also being able to find Betty’s door every time. Also since you’re ahead something that’s not explained well in the anime Betelgeuse at some point gets called an “evil spirit” that’s why at the end of the episode he’s able to possess Subaru due to his high affinity the reset in episode 18 actually foreshadow Subaru being able to be possessed when he was laughing and being called slothful by puck 48:39 just wanna point out that the mabeasts are also drawn to the finger since they have the witches scent on them as well 53:00 I once again have to shout out Subarus VA Yuusuke Kobayashi for being the goat that he is being able to pull off a flawless Betelgeuse 56:20 Felis did the same thing to Subaru he did on the Finger in the carriage basically reverse healing magic so their body was boiling itself from the inside rendering them unable to move. Quite ironic it’s Emilas VA singing stay alive in the ending while Subaru dies again at the end I recommend you to react to the full ed with lyrics when you’re done with this season! All good feel better soon!

(Edit in German it in fact didn’t say anything about honor Julius just asked if Subaru is injured and told him he held up well against the white whale) I watch Re:Zero myself in German sub and sometimes it says the opposite of what should’ve been said I noticed some weird localization that’s unfitting of the time period too so the English translation while not perfect still is one of the better ones ☠️

A bit of trivia. Felix "of Blue" is the world's top water element mage. Water element is not about controlling Ice, but fluids within bodies, making healing it's specialty. Felix is a master at mending bodies to the extent of resuscitating recently diseased, reattaching or even restoring lost limbs. He took the explosion in the carriage right on the chin, but was actuaaly able to heal himself faster than the explosion killed him. But what mends can also break. In case of Subaru, Felix has disabled his motor functions by frying nerves. I think Felix is among the characters I respect the most in ReZero. In the craziest situations he is able to put his feelings aside and make the difficult, calculated choice, like a really good medic should.

The sins right now are referring to the Sin Archbishops, the leading members of the Witch Cult. According to Petelgeuse, only Pride is unaccounted for. And there is no Envy Archbishop, since that would be the Witch herself, who is still alive. Petelgeuse believes that Subaru must be Pride because of the sheer magnitude of the witch's scent coming off of him, but so far, Subaru has yet to receive any gospel of his own. Subaru's connection to both the Witch and the Witch Cult is an ongoing mystery, so you'll have to keep watching to find out more. As for the Unseen Hands, normally they are invisible to the eye, but with a bunch of debris or ice particles in the air, even regular people can make out the outline of the hands and avoid them. This is never properly explained in the anime, but Petelgeuse is not human, he is a spirit capable of possessing people's bodies. However, he can only possess nearby people who have high spirit affinities and only if they haven't already contracted a spirit of their own. This is why Subaru gets possessed, but Julius and Emilia do not. Using this power, he possesses his "fingers" whenever his main body dies to escape death. Looking forward to the finale, then on to the movie and then Season 2!

I can't say I have the perfect understanding of Felix's words at the end there but I believe it's something like this: He swore to use his magical prowess in service of Crusch but now he's forced to his power to end a friend's life. A life to whom Crusch is forever grateful and indebted to for enabling to subjugation of the White Whale. Julius was more mad that Felix actually listened to Subaru's request of killing him. So that's why Felix responded back that way. "Because no one else can do it, can they?" given no one else was around to witness the situation and Julius was very clearly against killing Subaru, Felix made the tough decision. And after seeing Felix's determination, Julius steeled his resolve to kill Subaru, concluding that it was his own lack of virtue that led to Subaru asking to be killed and led to Felix deciding to kill Subaru.

In ep 23 in the (non directors cut) episodes, when Julius strikes Subaru (Betelgeuse) down and Emilia turns to look at the forest, the ed song (Stay Alive by Rie Takahashi) finishes the scene perfectly. When the 4 drum kicks on 8/4 time hit and everything goes completely silent, it punches you in the gut with all the different emotions; You knowing that Subaru just died after everything he had achieved, Emilia turning back to look in their direction not knowing what had just happened, and fearing for what happens next. And still you're left asking: wth just happened?

"What did Felis do?" Paralyzation. He basically took away Subaru's motor functions from the neck down, which is why he fell backward and Petelguese lamented the loss of his "perfect" new body. This tore Felis apart inside, having used his healer's ability to inflict harm, especially on a friend. Julius hated that Felis felt he had to act because of his hesitation in striking Subaru down. One of the real moments of fear after this death is the fear that Petelguese's soul might have become entangled with Subaru's in some way, as technically they both died when Julius struck. This was a tough episode for everyone watching. So close! They were so close to victory, though it was still a costly one. Villagers and soldiers fell to the Witch's Cult, Willhelm was badly injured, things went pretty far from the, "Let's make sure everyone comes back alive," wish Subaru proclaimed. But it still would have been a good outcome. Now let's just see where Subaru respawns after this death and if he needs to fight the White Whale yet again.

Before the second season yet Luke you should watch the OVA/Movie The Frozen Bond, it is important and its a prequel to the series. In addition, if you really like Re:Zero then maybe you'll be interested in the game Re:ZERO Starting Life in Another World The Prophecy of the Throne which is on PC and you could play it on the stream on Thursdays, the game takes place during the half of the first season that is the situation with royal selection only quite a bit changed and new things are added there to change the situation so in short description. For fans of Re:Zero this is a treat because some things are also developed there.

Subaru, as betelgeuse have said, is as much "loved" by the witch as an Archbishop, and he had the gospell. in a way, he is as much linked, if not more, to the cult that the finger, using this Betelgeuse choosed to make him a "finger" and possessed him, when that happend, Subaru choosed to flee so he doesn't hurt anyone in the village or even worse, Emillia who just killed a cult member in front of every villager, showing for sure to them that she is not someone to fear.

This anime continues to break me even after I've already watched It several times and can nearly remember everything that'll be occurring before It happens~☆ Couple of things to note (I've said important things in the previous episodes too, so I'd recommend looking back at one or two of my most recent comments where I explain basic stuff about the Witch's Cult and such, just so you don't get confused by certain unclear translations): - Once more, the Hakugei isn't a sin Itself, as stated during Crusch Karsten's "pre-Hakugei battle" speech, It was created 400 hundred years ago (before the start of the main story) by one of the Witches of Sin (I'm not going to state which one because I don't think It's been mentioned yet). To summarise right now, there's the Witches of Sin (who are referred to as "Sins" and are the at the top of the hierarchy) and a fan club a.k.a the Witch's Cult (note that It's the Witch's cult and not the Witches' cult because It started off only as Satella, the Witch of Envy's cult, but they also began worshipping all of the other sins, but Satella does take priority). Within said cult is a hierarchy of different classes, but simply put, It's the Sin Archbishops that are at the top in the cult and below is everyone other than them. The reason as to why Pride is the only unclaimed seat, so to speak, will be up for deduction in season 2, so I won't spoil It. - Connecting to the previous point, just remember that there are three terms you should know. These are: Witch Factors (objects which give rise to Authorities), Authorities (essentially fancy names for different skillsets) and Divine Protections (positive equivalent to the Witch Factors, but unlike said Witch Factors, they are intangible inherited traits/blessings passed down within a bloodline, with the most famous example being the bloodline of the Van Astrea family). - Petelgeuse is an interesting Sin Archbishop because he has the ability (this is the important reason as to why he can do what he can) to possess his fingers' (essentially puppet sacrifices that are his most loyal cultists ready to be possessed upon the demise of his main body) bodies which have been cast spell on beforehand and even entities having affinity for spirits (hence Subaru's possession towards the end). - After Petelgeuse dies, his state of existence allows him to possess those who are spirit compatible or cuckoo for coco puffs, in this case the fingers and Subaru, but Julius however, cannot be possessed due to having six guardian spirits (not only did Subaru have one, he was also a little over the edge). - Also, as Petelgeuse has an interesting state of existence, he's not able to exist in the state where he's not possessing someone (this is important concept which comes into play in the next episode). - And, don't forget to react to the Re:Zero: Bonds of Ice OVA, which delves into Emilia and Puck's relationship before the start of the main story. So yeah, that's that for the facts and such, but let me tell you, if you thought this episode was a stab in every organ, just wait for the finale of season 1 (next ep) :(

So having seen this show at least 4 times, I only just realised why the letter was blank. Rem wrote it. Although we don't see it til the end of next episode, Rem's actions have been erased, so she never wrote the letter but it still got sent, so it was blank by this point in the story and everyone except Subaru remembers it as having always been blank.

Something very importend to do after this season is the Frozen Bonds OVA make sure to watch it before Season 2 Luke 👍 Felis used the same move he used previously on that fake trader to immobilize him. Felis used it on Subaru because he understood Subaru was telling him to make sure Betelgeuse doesn't start using his powers so Julius can kill him.

The white whale is not a sin, the white whale was created by the witch of gluttony, she created all the beasts to help fight world hunger, but at the same time she gave the power to the beasts to defend themselves. When the witch of gluttony left her castle, all the beasts escaped with her and spread throughout the world. The whale is partially "controlled" by the archbishop of gluttony, archbishops and witches are not the same, witches are more powerful and represent the original sins, archbishops are something like heirs.

I remember the first time I saw it, I thought all is finally well, that Subaru would finally meet up with Emilia... then this. A suicide by choice, just so he woulnd't harm his friends. Also in the original the ending's music cut out right when Subaru died... so Emilia turned arount to silence. It was done better. The credits were rolling in that last scene already. Spoiler explanation, although it's never expressly stated in the anime so far: Beatrice clung so heavily on Puck because they are both artificial spirits made by Echidna, and when Roswaal brought Emilia and Puck to the mansion, Beatroce tried to take refuge through Puck on the gone days when she lived with him and Echidna. However, she soon realizes thsr Puck has lost his memory since he made a contract with Emilia (this is explained in Bomds of Ice) and she deems more appropriate to leave them be and bear the burden of her memories alone, but still is extremely attached to Puck, only furthering her own loneliness and isolation. This makes his contract with subaru all the more important for her character.

I love Re:Zero because of the well put foreshadows (no puns intended). It is a beautifully crafted puzzle. And like you have commented, Subaru is us. The details put on the screen are for us to extrapolate and figure out what is to come and how to solve it, which by the way you have on many occasions. Some people say it is too predictable and so it is boring, but that is the essence of a puzzle/mystery, the solvable nature through the hints given.

I'm 100% sure someone mentioned this already, but I'm too lazy to look. Petelgeuse's voice actor is Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, who's very known for voicing characters like Kirito and Yukihira Soma. I remember a lot of people's minds were blown when they learned he can do more than just the voice you'd usually hear from a protagonist. But yeah, all the voice actors are great, especially Subaru's. Also, I've always wondered if the sloth demihuman was intentional considering who they're fighting. Was he in the novels or did White Fox add him?

Felis did this so Julius could have an easier time of mercy killing Subaru while he's being possessed by Petelguese. Felis did not want to do this as they are a healer and Subaru's friend. Julius did not want to kill Subaru either and was bargaining with him up till the moment Felis paralyzed him and took the decision out of his hand. The sword comes down. End of episode. It's the easiest scene to understand in that whole confusing "how does Sloth power's work" battle. The actual confusing part, "how did Subaru get posessed" will be explained.
