Same here. I think the reason why it always gets me is because Wilhelm didn't just loose his lover he knew for a few months or so, he lost his wife he spent almost his entire life with, had a family with. I don't know, that makes it so much more tragic to me. And yet, this scene was somehow so.. beautiful aswell. I think the correct term is... bittersweet? This mix of emotion is just really powerful and hits me right in the feels every time

I could be wrong, but I believe they were held back for several reasons as Anastasia is well known for taking a lot into consideration. I think holding troops in reserve is a standard military tactic, but they also served to sequester the region to keep other merchants and civilians from getting hurt or getting in the way. Finally, I would wager that Anastasia was also thinking about the Witch's Cult and how it would be foolish to use every available soldier to fight the White Whale when they would have to pack up and get ready for another fight with Petalgueise's gang. I am sure the crack Felis made to Subaru about logistics was because Crush and Anastasia were negotiating who would commit their forces to what.

Wilhelm and Theresia are the grandparents of Reinhardt. They're a pretty fleshed out family in lore, but a lot of it is in later arcs or spinoff novels. Also Reinhardt is comically overpowered - attacks bend to avoid him, he can master any weapon (or improvised weapon) with a touch, and even has the magical ability to distinguish salt from sugar.

But simply forgetting all this humiliation is not so easy. I also want to remind you that the key to killing the White Whale (except for obviously Subaru) was the giant Flügel tree...which was very conveniently placed there.

The half of the mercenary team that blocked off the road were there to block it off against civilians, not cultists, since they didn't want any innocent people caught in the battle. the reason ricardo knew that subaru only did this to fight the witch's cult is because information travels fast. someone might've overheard subaru and rem talk about it and Anastasia got word of it, since she's incredible at gathering information.

What made him hate the knight is when the knight doubted his sincerity and faith towards Emilia which was the reason Subaru got angry. The Knight actually stepped on Subaru's pride first before Subaru said "What's so great about the knights anyway" which stepped on the knight's pride. Both of them have their own ego but it was ultimately started by the knight first.

It's quite simple really, to Subaru Emilia has done the same for him that Subaru did for rem. To Subaru Emilia was the first person who tried to help him, even if it was just a little bit, when he was suddenly brought to this new, strange world where he felt confused, scared, alone, weak. Emilia is just as much of a hero to Subaru as he is to Rem. It's not really a case of "this girl doesn't pay attention to me, therefore I like her".

I'm not subaru but despite rem's change, which was huge, the fact that I know she killed me once would be a big turn off for me. That thought would linger for a while. But I guess this is what happens when one of them becomes the focus of the show for quite a lot of time of the later half of the first season. It makes you forget what Emilia did, which was a decent amount for the mc. It doesn't matter who did more. The most important thing is the impact it had on the person.

And just as I explained on my first comment Subaru is rem's emilia, not because of what rem is doing for him but because of what he did for her. If we really wanted to get technical what subaru did for rem was way less than what Emilia did for subaru. Rem fell for him after the demon dog incident, which is just one instance, while emilia helped subaru way more before he fell for her. Also at that point (in which he fell for her) he had mc syndrome and thought it was all just a game and she was "programed for her" in a way. Hell, if we're going by touching/impactful scenes (at least to me) Subaru's breakdown while resting on Emilia's lap (a point in the story in which emilia was basically his only friend/ally inside the mansion) was as impactful as Subaru's conversation with rem before the whale raid.

I think people are too harsh on Subaru for picking Emilia. She was the first to save him, to be kind to him, to comfort him when he was having a mental breakdown. She essentially did everything Rem had done before Rem became a Subaru simp and even though Emilia has every reason to be angry with Subaru, she still chooses to hear his side, and want to understand him. Not to mention she never killed Subaru *cough* Mansion arc Rem. But yeah, both are great. Rem just so happened to be more popular because her scenes were giving more attention and were more recent.

Let's be honest, it's also not like Rem's idolization of Subaru (which _just so happens_ to mirror the way Subaru obsessively "protects" Emilia, particularly at the start of Arc 3) is all that healthy either. Yes, she helped Subaru work through his self-hatred, and yes, she did make for an awesome assistant, but she also enabled many of his worst impulses. And it very much feels like she's still burying her deeper issues like when she made Ram her only reason for living, but now she replaced her with Subaru. Like seriously, that's not a recipe for a healthy relationship in the long-term. Emilia, for all her flaws, at least doesn’t have that co-dependent impulse.

@@badwulff this is a perspective I didn’t even consider. But yeah, it’s very true. I still do think that Rem isn’t too bad as she also doesn’t necessarily baby Subaru. Subaru himself said that Rem would support through everything but will never allow him to give up. She loves him the most, but is also tougher on him than anyone. If characters like Emilia or Petra had been there for Subaru’s mental breakdown, I doubt they would have had the same effect or mindset as Rem. Rem does Idolize Ram but for different reasons. She saw herself as a replacement and thus put Ram on a pedestal, where as Subaru helped her break out of that and as she said, “Said the things she wanted to hear the most, when she needed it the most.” It still isn’t exactly healthy, but I do believe it is a bit more nuanced than Rem is basically a Subaru simp.

The author of the novels wrote several alternate endings to the story, so there is an entire story about Rem and Subaru running off together and living happily ever after. They still face ordeals, and Subaru has to grow up and stop running away in that story too, but he's doing it for his lovely new family!

Some other people already mentioned it but Swordmaster is a very poor translation from the subs, it should be Sword Saint which better describes that it's not a skill, but a title you "become" after being chosen. The current Sword Saint is Reinhard so make of this what you will for now 😉

Emilia was the first to save Subaru, and not just on one occasion. She’s his hero. He’s seen her be selfless and help others, even though most people would dislike her for resembling the witch. While Emilia will reach out despite others feelings, Rem hadn’t gotten involved with others because of her being a demon and her past. This was why Ram told Subaru not to tell her the ogre story in loop. You’re wrong in believing that Emilia doesn’t care about him. She’s not a tsundere, it’s more that she’s confused and unaware of her own feelings; Subaru’s clueless, but Puck gets it. She’s not quite at the level of Rem blindly trusting Subaru at this point, but she has always made attempts to believe in him even when he never gives her reason to, and for much longer (more loops) than Rem. It wasn’t until he broke his promise and went on his temper tantrum that she lost faith in him.

Upon his first introduction I though Wilhelm seemed cool and interesting, and after seeing him and his backstory in this episode it definitely made him one of my favorite characters in this series. It was supposed to be time for Subaru to start accomplishing stuff but honestly Wilhelm really stole the show in this. Also this is worth pointing out since Wilhelms wife was a Van Astrea, she was Reinhardts Grandmother which makes Wilhelm his Grandfather.

Great reaction~☆ About the Hakugei, It has two mists which It can release (from the glands on Its body), one is what It floats and swims in that can also drain Mana and cause painful physical ailments (Mist of Mental Contamination) and the other one is what can completely poof people out of existence and erase all memories of them from the world (Mist of Elimination). If It doesn't poof someone then It eats them which doesn't have the same effect as the Mist of Elimination. The truth about what happened to the previous Sword Saint, Theresia Van Astrea, and why she's still remembered will be explained much later on in future seasons. I don't care how many times I watch this anime or how many times I watch these episodes pertaining to Wilhelm and his story, I can never not cry every single time. I can truly relate to his circumstances in one way or another, bless him and Theresia. As for what's about to come next to end off this season...let's just say you'll be hooked onto this series even further

Training their minds and bodies so that the motion of swinging a sword is as natural as breathing, so that in combat, it doesn't take any extra mental or physical energy. It's like driving. When you make a turn or try to pick up speed, you don't think "Now I will turn the steering wheel" or "Now I will press THIS hard on the gas pedal", you think "Now turn left" and "Go faster", because controlling the car has become second nature, essentially an extension of your body. Aside from that, it's just a good exercise to build arm muscle. Source: Am artist, and one of the ways you pick up the skill of drawing lines well is practicing a singular, specific motion that's often compared to this sword swinging exercise.

Not exactly. It's the scene before that when Subaru and Rem are alone in front of the tree. Subaru says that he loves Emilia, but he can't stop his heart from aching when he thinks of Rem. Seeing Subaru conflicted Rem jokingly suggests he takes both of them as his wives, Subaru accepts, saying it's ok as long as Emilia doesn't have a problem with polygamy. Later on, that scene happens where Rem fakes her death, and Subaru finally says for the first time that he loves Rem, to which she responds, saying that he can't take that back anymore. They are about to kiss when Felix stops them.

That's one of the reason I don't like Rem: she knew how much Subaru was emotionally unstable and she went on her little (bastard) plan to play with his insecurities as soon as they've fought a massive battle... Two days after she watched him breaking down, expressly saying: "LIVE with me" and again she played with his emotions feigning death! That's true, Subaru could have been more gentle when he put her down after her confession but he would never tricked her (anyone for real) in this cruel way. Emilia is the authors favorite character and one of the main reasons for writing the story. He doesn't like ranking characters but said Emilia is first and the others are second. She is the hardest character for the author to write and he considers her the most beautiful. Even the illustrator had a hard time coming up with her design due to the pressure placed on him by the author. Crusch 's coolness +100 these 2 episodes.

I don't really like the "master swordsman" translation but i guess it's fine. I was just used to read "Sword Saint" from the novel. Also, since Wilhelm was known as the "Sword Demon" paired with the "Sword Saint" sounds way cooler. And the wordings too like "kensei", ken is sword and sei meaning saint, and it makes it more prestigious than a mere swordmaster because there can only be 1 sword saint in the whole world to exist at a time

I don't think the anime conveyed it properly. But in regards to Wilhelm and his wife is that even though she was the sword saint and blessed to wield the blade she actually didn't like it. So when Wilhelm fell in love with her he continued to get better in order to surpass her so she wouldn't have to anymore. Also, Subaru knows by now that the witches curse on him activates when he attempts to talk about his ability. Since Mabeasts are attracted to him because of it he started talking about it to get it to activate and draw its attention. It's why he asks Rem about whether she can smell it coming off of him.

It still amazes me that the White Whale was all done in 2D. White Fox wanted to make sure this fight looked good, and they succeeded in a huge way. Wilhelm is such a badass! If they did all of that with no 3D assistance (like drawing over a model), my mind will be blown. I was bummed that it looked like Ricardo was taken out for good, but not only did he survive, he gave Subaru some vital information to help turn the tide and now him and his group are assisting in taking down the Witch Cult. Also still find it weird that he's a kobold. I get that Japan's takes on kobolds tend to be more canine like, but still... I do find it funny that Patrasche looks back when Rem catches Subaru. Maybe she's just making sure Subaru's OK, or maybe there's a hint of jealously towards Rem... Also major props when it comes to Subaru, Rem, and Emilia. I'm sure people are still at each other's throats about who Subaru should be with. Honestly, I would like to see him and Rem together (and we do get that in a What-If), but if Subaru really feels that way for Emilia and they do end up being together and it's done well, I'm cool with that too.

Reinhardt is the strongest swordsman in history, he says he doesn’t live up to his families expectations 1, because of his backstory 2, because he’s overtly modest. He could literally one shot the white whale lmao 😂😂 There are a few reasons why Reinhardt hasn’t just tped over to the white whale and annihilated it, mainly because he is the only person in the kingdom who needs permission (Cus he’s so strong and the master swordsman) to leave, and in most peoples eyes the fight isn’t worth it. Another thing, master swordsman is a title yes, but it’s also a divine blessing. It’s passed on in the van astrea family so you also need that to be the master swordsman which basically just automatically makes you the strongest swordsman lol.

I understand why people don't like Subaru's behavior in the past episode , but for me he's 3/4 right. Without him the majority would be dead, even when they tell him to leave if he doesn't return to the past they would be dead... It’s kind of funny that you mentioned Subaru having all the women in the kingdom fall in love with him, especially after on the last episode I brought up Rem IF… because as an April Fool’s Day gag written many years ago now, Tappei Nagatsuki wrote yet another alternate Re:Zero story which became known as The Butterfly’s Dream, also known as Lust IF, where the royal candidates plus several other women fell in love with Subaru. It’s horrible compared to the other Re:Zero IF stories (some of which are nearly as good as the main story itself), but it also established the tradition of writing one of these stories for April Fool’s Day.

a few fun facts .. 0) subaru stated that he wanted to Legit Marry both emilia and rem, idk why the anime cuts that out like bruh... he didnt reject rem at all. 1) if Ram still had her horn, she would be able to solo the whale, like defeat it without any help whatsoever 2) from the previous episode, the tree had Japanese writing on it, which said ""flugel was here"".... which raised the question of was flugel from subaru's world, and who brought him to the re zero world 400 years ago? 3) you only get forgotten if you die by the fog, the white whale could also kill you other ways and that's why people still remember the ones they lost in the previous battle against it 10-15 years ago. 4) otto went insane and pushed subaru out of the cart a couple episodes back because he went insane due to the white whale's screeches, it's not his fault at all.... also we'd love it if you could react to the Pride and Wrath IF stories, there's only a slight spoiler in one of them but there's a timestamp given to skip ahead. Dont worry it has nothing to do with the sins, but instead with suubaru completly messing up everything and diverging the entire plot off rails. they're absolutly fantastic.

And it helps you get completely used to how exactly each strike feels so you can more meticulous control the strength of your hits and not overextend them. Also, it kinda trains the muscles used for swinging a sword, which is pretty helpful if you want to swing swords. That said, when I tried a HEMA class (Historical European Martial Arts) and learned about it, we didn't do the same move over and over, instead repeating a sequence of various different angles. That seems to be mostly cultural though, since anime is japanese and their training routines are different from the ones I've seen, but the same logic should apply for why you'd swing a sword over and over again like that.

That's no true. Subaru could be a dumbass sometimes but he's not stupid. I don't know WHEN but he understood Julius probably saved his life with the mock fight and he IS secretly grateful for that (in the 6th arc was mentioned). The thing is: he has some buff with Julius and the type of person he tries so hard to be. The brutal way of the fight was the only crack of the perfect image of the "finest knight" he found out.
