Asking me what I'm listening to at the moment should in theory be a pretty straightforward answer...My brain decided that this wasn't going to happen. Here's a list of the bands in the video as well as some new goth, goth adjacent and older bands that are still active.
(PS- As it turns out the heat in my new house is SO good that you can cure bacon in the living room. I've had to get a humidifier and a case of embryolisse to combat my insanely dehydrated skin. So although it looks like I've got a case of the sads in this video, my skin is actually doing its best impersonation of a raisin. Oh, and the lipstick is eye shadow because that's how I'm rolling these days. )
Bands mentioned in this video:
Kuta
Them Are Us Too
SRSQ
Drab Majesty
Lebanon Hanover
She Past Away
Death of Lovers
The Hearse
Her Despair
Other Goth (Goth Adjacent) bands either new or older but still releasing music/touring.
Clan of Xymox
Monica Richards
Eden House
Aeon Sable
La Scaltra
The Frozen Autumn
Shadow Age
The Long Losts
In Letter Form
Date At Midnight
Funereal Eyes
Skeletal Family
Ash Code
Light Asylum (More electronic but still worth a listen)
The Awakening
Lycia
Black Tape For A Blue Girl
Dead Can Dance
Eva O
Ghost Dance
Angels of Liberty
After Dusk
Ritual Howls
Keluar
Figure Study
The Agnes Circle
All Your Sisters
Boy Harsher
Cabaret Nocturne
Linea Aspera
(Comment with your finds and I'll add them)

I really can't understand why so many of the different goth "types" hate and bully each other... We don't have to love all the same bands and look like the same. That would be so boring! There are so many types of personal taste and we have to respect that! Of course we can tell others our favourite bands, if they don't know them. But please respect it, if they don't like them and don't call them "posers"! Only if we respect and inspire each other the culture can survive and grow! 😉 And yes, it also means to respect Pastel Goth as a crossover between Nu Goth and japanese Lolita. You don't have to like it, but please respect it. 😊 Share love instead of hate! 😙 Ps: This comment is at all. :)

There are tons of modern goth bands that I'm loving. Dead Spells, Illusionaut, Cold Showers, Drab Majesty (Angela's playlist got me into them), Then Comes Silence, The Birthday Massacre, Johnny Hollow (they're coming out with a new album rn), Lebanon Hanover, Undertheskin, Boy Harsher, TRAITRS, Soviet Soviet, Chelsea Wolfe (idk if she counts as goth but I'm adding her to the list anyway), She Past Away, Bat Nouveau (I literally thought this was an 80's band when I first heard them) and Selofan. I don't understand people who complain that there isn't any new good goth bands when there are tons.

I have to admit that I've only listened to a few of the bands you mentioned, but I think that the ones I am familiar with are mostly just reviving old genres. I think they sound good, and I enjoy listening to them. But I feel like they're not doing anything new or moving the genre forward. People are mostly drawn to them for "nostalgia" feels. Yes, it doesn't mean that the scene is dead, because there are people still making and enjoying this music. I just feel like it's stagnant and not the most exciting, and part of what makes a scene thrive is when something new is happening. (Even if it's just like mixing post-punk with garage/indie, like in the early 2000s.)

Well. As a "Millennial" Goth (lol, I was born in 1997 but I wish I could live the 80s and I was a teenager in the 90s) with a ridiculous grandiose music taste obsessed with Cure, Sisters, Depeche Mode, New Order etc. I jam with She Wants Revenge, Bat Nouveau, Cold Cave, oh how I adore Cold Cave and Blaqk Audio. So to me Goth is not dead, Goth will never die.

I am definitely more rooted to the 80’s goth sound. But I refuse to be “exclusive” to that. I love London After Midnight, Frozen Autumn, And Lebanon Hanover. I own a couple of the comp discs from the 90’s and I love a lot of those sounds as well. The originals, ie Bauhaus, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, And Siouxsie are like coming home for me. But again, I will definitely give the new stuff a good try as well. Drab Majesty is growing on me because of you! All of the samples you gave show just how much variety there is in Goth music. It’s a big genre with all kinds of different flavors. Definitely something in it for everyone. Great video!

I like modern goth music. It's very reminiscent of the 90s, when the subculture peaked. Maybe one day we'll bridge the gap between subculture and culture. We're getting there, we just need more goths, music styles, arts, etc.

I have very mixed feelings about the gothic scene since I discovered it a few years ago. Since I first heard such bands as The Cure, Christian Death, The Birthday Party etc., I realised that this is my type of music, but at the same time I absolutely agree with those who say that today's gothic subculture has nothing to do with what it was from the very beginning. At least I can make such a conclusion after a deep research about those times. The culture of aesthetical protest, based on diy, was almost completely replaced by the culture of consumerism, and so-called alternative/gothic brands. I emphasize that I don’t have anything against these stores, and I myself have things from there, but this should not be enough for the whole gothic culture. As for music, I don’t think that it is dead, I find wonderful modern bands, but the fact is that now they are in the underground and probably not all of them use "goth" label. So I can say that despite the fact that I am a big fan of post-punk, goth rock, death rock and other genres falling under a gothic umbrella, I don’t really want to be called "goth", because there're things about the modern scene which I really dislike. I just want to be myself, wear clothes that I like, listen to my favorite music and so on.

I was half paying attention to you, and half paying attention to my knitting, but you really grabbed my full attention when you mentioned that you first started out by listening to 90's industrial. Im a babybat. I honestly wish goth was like it was in the 80s,90s,and early 2000s. I feel like I'll never have the fun you or elder goths had. I started as a Marilyn Manson poser. But you introduced me into Switchblade Symphoney. Which really got me into goth. I hate all the hype over nu goth, and pastel goth, it isn't goth! I wish I had fun hangouts to go to. Plus its impossible to introduce friends to goth music because its so obscure, and ruined by mainstream media. Goth isn't the same at all. I hate all the new brands. I like the good old idea of thrifting and diy. Your stories about the subculture really make me happy knowing that goth was once alive. I wish all ages clubs still existed since there's no way I could make my friends have small gothy dance parties. I would love to have the novelty of dressing up and dancing to music I love.

VampiresAnDollhouses 101 - Being a babybat can be pretty tough, especially depending on where you live. Manson is not a bad place to start as he is definitely a phase of the culture. I was lucky enough to see Switchblade Symphony in the 90's before they broke up. Older Rasputina is good which you may have heard of already since they did a collab with MM back in the day. I am not sure what you have available to you, but as you grow and become more familiar with your likes and dislikes, don't discount trying to put something together on your own or with a couple of like-minded people in the area. That is part of the DIY too, it doesn't have to work just for clothing, etc. :) Also, you don't want to discount what other people are in to such as nu goth, pastel goth...it may not be for you, but it works for others and we don't want to discredit something because it isn't what we resonate with ourselves. This is what mainstream media does to keep things obscure so you don't want to unwittingly contribute. You want to embrace it, these other branches of goth are simply distant relatives but you don't have to visit them if you don't want to. :) This video shows that there are current/new bands that are still making great music, it just takes some research. Start with certain record labels like Projekt and Dais records for more current music. Keep goth alive and moving forward babybat! You are our hope for Goth to live on in the future! ^@^

Second! Personally I listen to Voltaires albums since he's consistently making music also MCR, siouxsie and the banshees, Mötorhead, The Cure, this way to the Egress, Tragic Tantrum Cabaret... 90's was great for goth and punk. Personally I love the old and new because without growth our genre our artist lives die. Toxic purists put a pressure on baby bats effectively shutting them out of the experience of GOTH... P.S. May the darkness envelop our lives and make you shine. P.S.S - I got into goth through punk and metal also in defiance of my father's obsession with American Country music... And I don't regret a damn thing.

The weird thing about how I got into the subculture was I was already a pretty big fan of Bowie and I was researching people who had covered his most well known music. Which led me to the Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust and I was hooked the instant I heard the way they performed the riff. Also, really enjoy that ending message. In Brisbane there's only really one place still open that really sells Goth specific items and memorabilia - clothes, music, movies, books etc. - so the idea of "we need to keep the modern artistic side of this subculture alive"...I absolutely 1000 per cent support that.

Michael V. C. Bryson Never thought Bowie was considered goth but loved the uniqueness of his music. So many epic bands that nothing really seems to come close to in originality and very talented now. Not goth but stuff like Pink Floyd, Prince, Queen, Micheal Jackson, Zappa, etc. Okay to disagree. Not exposed to a lot of new stuff much anymore. Too much stuff out to keep up and find what I'd like. Other things keep me busy.

@@JNoMooreNumbers Yeah, I enjoy some Pink Floyd too. And there are artists like that in this day and age, its just that the most popular ones are "on the edge of mainstream acceptability without falling into it" (Janelle Monae for example - St Vincent is another). Bowie has actually had a pretty interesting relationship with Goth music. For one, you could definitely see some of his early career as "Proto-Punk" (Punk music before Punk actually happened - Velvet Underground are another great band that qualify). He made 2 albums that do sort of "count" as being Gothic. Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980 which is a Post-Punk album, and 1. Outside in 1995 which is an almost Industrial Nine Inch Nails Rock style album. In fact for the touring of that album, Nine Inch Nails was his opening band. Then there's the fact that a lot of bands that would go on to be "Goth" were a part of the Bromley Contingent - a group of London Punks who happened to also like David Bowie and were their own specific "movement" (Siouxsie And The Banshees and Billy Idol were a part of that group). There's the Bauhaus "Ziggy Stardust" cover which Bowie loved to a point of saying "I wish I did it that way" and got them to open a movie he was in around that time called "The Hunger" (itself a pretty gothic film), he did a duet with artist Placebo called "Without You (I'm Nothing)" and invited both Placebo and The Cure to perform at his 50th Birthday Concert. So yeah Bowie isn't Goth but he's definitely enjoyed the music and has had a long lasting almost symbiotic influence over the subculture.

Hi there. I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I realize this video is a year old but it carries a lot of importance for me. Over the past two years I have watched and re-watched many of your videos because each time I watch them I seem to get a different message or clue to what I'm feeling by doing so. I have worked your playlists, I have scoured Bandcamp and Amazon music and made my own, I have gone out and expanded my music vocabulary largely due to this video and the like (e.g.Skullgirdle's vids). The depth and breadth of my own musical repertoire now is so much more extensive than it was even a year ago. And while I enjoy listening to, and learning about, breaking music down in to its various categories, I find I now just listen indiscriminately and just...enjoy. thanks!

I think I have similar music interests as you... dark, melancholic, atmospheric synth, but with strong reverb gothic guitars - Twin Tribes, This Eternal Decay, The Secret French Postcards, Forever Grey, Autumn, Hante., Lycia, Cabaret Grey, Astari Nite, Glaring, Corbeau Hangs, She Past Away. I'm very new to this subculture, but 2 weeks of trying out various styles reveal these as my preferred sounds. Some of these I am now aware of courtesy of yourself, so thank you

One of my favorites is The Last Dance who were active from the 90’s to the early 2000’s; I believe that they can be classified as Dark wave. In late 2000’s Sydney we had a local band, Familia which I thought were the bees knees; sadly I’ve not been able to find their stuff online to share but I have their CDs. As for goth bands of today I love Sounds Like Winter... they’re local so I try to support them as much as I can.

Stuff with a good bass music being heard! Atmospheric goth music! Drab Majesty is on my playlist, the Lords of the New Church is on there, a variety of different goth tracks are on my playlist. I don’t tend to listen to specifically one band. I do like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sisters of Mercy and they were the ones who got me into goth music ironically! Thank you for this video!

That is the same with Blackmetal with a Goth influence because of the dark aesthetic, such as Into The Pandemonium by Celtic Frost. We also have Goth style in the vocals of Mercyful Fate. Than there is Suicidal BM with a Industrial and Goth influence like with Bethlehem. Blut Aus Nord is very dark and atmospheric as well. I was like this until l fell in love with a Goth who educated me. Also props to you educating me on this channel. I am not here to be a know it all because there is a lot to learn when we struggle to work and survive.

Ugh, I’ve been sad about my local goth club closing. I never even got to go because it was 21+ and I turn 21 next year at the beginning of the year. I think it’s hard to keep the scene going as it used to be when you’re young and don’t really have the money for a venue to hold goth nights at. I really wish I had been there for the goth scene in the 90s. Christian Death was also the band that got me into goth. Spiritual Cramp, Romeo’s distress, and figurative theater. When I heard those I was like this is it, this is what I’ve been looking for.

Her Despair is AWESOME! One method I use to judge goth/industrial music is by how much I feel the need to get up and dance. I just listened to Her Despair for the first time. Also, I kinda know what you mean-- even though I was born in '99, I was kinda raised in a weird time portal where everything that I grew up with was hand-me-downs from my much older brother, so everything I had was '90's era essentially. In our elder days, our music used to be main stream. Nowadays there's this band called She Wants Revenge using post-punk, new-underground goth and/or old goth music tendencies. I trully recommend you guys to give it a try. The fact that a band might be main stream nowadays doesn't mean they cannot be supported if they honor the elder sounds and dark lyrics.
