Hey everyone! It took me forever to make these clips and by the time I got to the remaining few I was exhausted. After swapping out A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran for 'Wishing' I forgot to change the text. So if you like that song and want to find it 'A Flock of Seagulls - Wishing'.

I agree with what you said about first listening to goth music. I will be honest to say I hated it for awhile untill I found (The Cure) & (Christain Death) and soon after I begin to fall in love with more and more 80's Darkwave goth music. And that is where my goth roots started and helped me through my baby-bat yrs. I am 24 and I have open my self up to every branch of the gothic subculture. Recently for a few months now I really really gotten into the Industrial Cybergoth style and subculture.

I definitely swing to more of the metal music, but Bauhaus will always be one of my favourites. I listen to everything from classic post punk, ebm, industrial, dark-wave...just whatever appeals to me. I think it can be so limiting to listen to one exclusive genre, so I appreciate that you went into such fine detail explaining all the sub-genres and relative music styles relating to the gothic subculture. This video NEEDS to be part of "The Curriculum" (if there ever was one :D )

I'm happy you like it! Maybe we should compile a curriculum! There are a lot of informative videos out there. I really hope people find this helpful. I was really surprised to hear that so many were under the assumption that goth is limited to the most popular staples (Bauhaus, Sisters, Siouxsie etc) but once upon a time so did I. It was so long ago I just forgot. Something really interesting that I've come to find is that umbrella has different subgenres beneath it depending on country. I want to explore that a bit. My husband is a fan of metal as well I noticed he has more Symphonic leanings such as Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica and stuff. I agree, listening to one genre can be really limiting. Some days I blast New Kids on The Block (this literally happens regularly).

Everything you mentioned in the beginning. I really love the style, DIY, darkness and etc...but I’m trying to listen to the music and I dislike it. I like bands like Siouxsie, Bauhaus, The Cure, The Smith’s, Ghost, HIM...but that’s about it that I can think of. I go back in forth listening to goth music because if I force myself to listen to it, I will eventually like it. I think the main thing for me is I prefer dark classical music to go along with my dark Victorian/Edwardian infatuation. I look forward to watching your videos to teach me more about goth bands that aren’t just 80s goth industrial bands that I already know of. I want to hear something new and their spin on it. I recently met a guy who is in a HIM tribute band with great music.

I definitely had not thought about the music she showed as goth, when I think about goth music I think about something like Nighwish or if more raw Slipknot. But maybe it depends on where you come from or your age and she's definitely the expert on what actual goth music is, specially originally, so very interesting video to learn more. I know some "goths" are just fashion goths too.

People who look goth somehow and listen to mother mother and mitzki, are ok for me. I like people who look how they like it, but I would not call them goth based on their looks. I would secretly call them alt-kids and laugh (secretly because I’m a real loner) It just reminded me of an analogy. Do you remember the silent battle between skaters and scooter kids? They where kinda annoying, always driving in your line, but they also just wanted to enjoy the experience visiting a skatepark.

I love the approach you're taking to this topic - not trying to squish people's goth dreams under your boot, but instead trying to help people understand that they probably already like goth music and just haven't heard enough to know it yet. I really appreciate the work you are putting into this topic.

Thank you! That's what's super important - I don't want to alienate anyone or make them feel as if they're being judged or held to a certain standard because it's not like that. We're here to help and once upon a time we were just like them. Today there are so many more resources available but they're kinda useless when you don't know what you're looking for. It's cool to be able to help others navigate just like we were when we were the youngins.

For me personally, I rolled into goth fashion after an emo phase while listening to a lot of metal and punk. Research into goth music has always presented a challenge for me because in my experience a lot of people, articles and things like that will not agree on which bands belong to which genre. I went through this video with a notepad, wrote down every band you mentioned and am currently digging through that to see which bands and or genres I like. Thank you very much for this video

Type O Negative is what got me into metal! My then boyfriend, (now fiancé) is a metalhead, I was a goth who hated metal…he showed me Type O Negative, I fell in love with both the music and Pete Steele, and the rest is history. Now my playlist probably has more metal music than anything, but I definitely still love Goth music. From what I hear, Pete was very into goth music and would go to goth clubs. I think Angela has even mentioned seeing him at a club in the 90s if I’m not mistaken. Goth music (and goth women let’s be honest) is what pushed Pete to transform Carnivore into Type O Negative, the band that seems to lure in goths and metalheads alike.

I was always more into industrial, darkwave, grungy grind metal and cyber sounds. Me and electronic music have more of a spot then 80's trad goth music. I LOVE EBM, I just wish there was a scene for that where I live. But I have a spot for Alien Sex Fiend and the Cure. I haven't explored enough in the 80's area myself to find a deep love there yet. I find myself alternating different fashions of goth to suit my mood and what I am doing that day. I am a fashion dweeb. I am a very pop-oriented person as much as underground too. So I feel I fit more in cyberpop since I love creepy kawaii fashion too. Pastels really suit me I had learned the past few years.

As a New Waver (if that's a thing) it is kinda weird/cool how _much_ a lot of goth and goth-adjacent music crosses over with stuff I already like or want to check out (I gotta get me into some darkwave), but nobody would call me goth unless I dressed in all black, which I usually don't. But yeah, if you're into synth stuff in general, both new and old...crossovers are gonna happen--according to this video, more often than I'd've thought. Basically during the New Wave and New Romantic parts of the video I was sitting there going "I love that song, I love that song, that one's in my collection, so is that, not that exact one but something else from the same album..." XD What I'm trying to say is thank you for an educational and interesting video, even if I am over three years too late. :)

I get a lot of laughs these days because in my 50s, I am too old to be running around all gothed up. A few years ago I walked into a shop in Camden (before it burned down), and there was a shop run by these French goth girls. They looked me up and down as if to say "what do you think you're doing in here"? I looked right back at them and thought "fuck you, I saw Bauhaus live". If you think that you need to dress up to be goth, you have already missed the point.

Yes! When I was younger, the gothest people I knew in terms of being knowledgeable about the music and quite literally saw practically every band possible live, was older and aside from a black t-shirt, didn't look perceptibly goth. Any goth worth their salt knows a sleeper when they see one! Those French girls sound like fashion goths. In it for the looks while the music takes a backseat...Or rides in the trunk (boot)! I miss the crap out of Camden. I lived in England for 6 years. What I wouldn't do for Belgian Bun from Gregg's.

Oh Angela, your channel has become my very favorite and i can literally listen to you talk all day. You have made me realize I’m more of a Goth than I thought i was. Almost every sub genre of music you have mentioned i have listened to, but i am still finding more music I like every day. My entry into goth music all started with my love of new wave . Depeche mode, the smiths, flock of seagulls , and the cure especially. These bands opened the door for me to explore more music. I started listening to siouxsie soon after. Then i discovered sisters of mercy here on youtube actually and loved them. Also Bauhaus. Then i found a band named “Cranes” and i instantly fell in love with them. I always liked the cocteau twins but the. later started listening to this mortal coil. About five years ago i got into industrial and heard skinny puppy for the first time when my ex introduced them to me . I then also started listening to NIN. I love your taste in music and have even found new sounds here on your channel. Thank you so much for sharing and helping me find myself. Being a mom makes you feel secluded often and i have fashion wise been trying to find colors i like to wear because i get bored of always wearing black after years and years of limiting myself to only black. Other people online have made me question my “goth” identity with their extreme aesthetic but your channel has assured me I’m still 100 percent goth girl deep down🖤

Great video! Though I was a little surprised there was no mention of gothic (doom) metal. From what I understand it's kind of controversial in the goth subculture. For those of you who don't know, doom metal is typically slow and dark sounding, heavily influenced by Black Sabbath. Gothic doom metal mixes this style with gothic rock, making it more atmospheric. The guitar in gothic doom is usually more melodic and synths, piano, and/or strings commonly are commonly used. Something else you might find would be clean female vocals with growled male vocals. Gothic doom is also closely associated with death/doom metal, a mix of the respective genre names. Here's a few songs for anyone interested: Type O Negative - Christian Woman Draconian - The Morningstar Theatre of Tragedy - The Masquerader and Phoinex Black metal is another genre quite a few goths seems to enjoy, (at least it seems that way from the ones into metal) particularly the second wave style from the 90s. Black metal is pretty dark and aggressive for those not used to it but I think goths might be more inclined to enjoying it. Some songs would be: Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time Dissection - Night's Blood Emperor - The Burning Shadows of Silence

Joy division's unknown pleasures is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I don't really like much more music in the goth category. I dress goth and I really like dark literature, gothic horror and poetry. It's very inspiring to my art. I don't feel like I can call myself goth tho. I donno. It shouldn't be such a big deal anyways. Where I live the goth subculture doesn't even exist. I just like dark stuff. Also...Everything is so broadly mixed today so any subculture has a hard time. I hang out with many different "alternative" people and I enjoy my life. Anyways. I really like your approach to the topic. If the subculture can revive itself, this is the way.

"Goth while Goth was still buffering." LMAO love it! Great video, as always, Angela! I like pretty much all of those genres you listed, and many of the bands and songs I recognized. I'm still learning about many of these. I came into the music somewhat obliquely. While a teenager in the early 80's, I called myself a "rocker" (metalhead,) but even back then, I disdained from limiting myself. While some of my favorite bands were groups like Motely Crue and Queensryche, I also enjoyed U2, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and Berlin. Even now, whole I am exploring the multiple genres that fall into the "Goth" category, like most of the genres you mentioned, I still enjoy some metal bands, especially symphonic metal like Nightwish and Within Temptation, goth metal or goth inspired metal like Bella Morte and Carfax Abbey, somewhat darker, though more 'contemporary' metal bands like Korn, Disturbed, and Godsmack. I began exploring the music first when I was living in Monterey California, and began to attend "Progressive Night" at one of the local clubs. The Club (that was actually the name of the place) played bands like the B52s, Ministry, Soft Cell, and others in an eclectic mix of new wave, synthpop, and other 'alternative' genres. At one point in the late 90's I bought a couple of Sisters of Mercy CDs. I didn't even know they were goth, I just liked them. I'm not even sure where I heard them first, to be honest. Still, in what could be major irony, it wasn't until around 2005 that I really began delving into the music., The ironic part is not the date, but that I found it while entertaining myself playing Second Life, an online video game in the mode of the sims. Second Life was termed a virtual world where you could be whoever you wanted to be. As such, there were many 'clubs' within the game, and it was in these, that I first came across bands like Nightwish, and later VNV Nation, and Diary of Dreams, as well as Faith and the Muse. As far as the question posed at the beginning of the video, I do think the music matters, but there are so many (as you aptly demonstrated) genres of music that can fall under the goth tag even if they are technically not goth, that I find there to be too much overlap to draw hard lines. OK I take that back. If you listen to Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and the like, and that is all you listen to, even if one enjoys the goth aesthetic, fashion wise, I am hesitant to call them "Goth." PS Your lipstick looked amazing. Actually, your make up did, but the lipstick stood out for me.

My goodness I haven't listened to Switchblade Symphony since I was about 15 or 16 thank you so much! It was strangely like your Sisters Of Mercy story - I was searching for Riot Grrl and something about their look and the bands I found them with reminded me of Riot Grrl but after feeling excited about finding a new Riot Grrl band, I listened to Bad Trash and was so disappointed - because I was 15 and it wasnt what I was looking for right then. Later of course when the atmosphere called for it, I reheard them and loved it.

I love how you did this Angela! This is really a great educational video for those who are getting into goth by providing all these awesome examples of the different sub genres. Plus, like others have said, you approached the subject with non judgement and without sounding preachy. You make an awesome teacher! Hopefully people will find this video and want to research and explore further. I find that there is sound for everyone here. Plus like you alluded to, the internet makes it a bit easier to find good music versus back in the 90s or even the early 2000s when you had to buy cds or go by word of mouth. Thank you for putting so much emphasis on the music versus just fashion on your channel! Side note I think you should DJ at a club one day. I'd so trek out to the city for that!

Then I was introduced to the Sisters of Mercy and later I listened to the goth bands I heard first and now I really like them. I still sometimes listen to industrial (Not MM anymore because he is disgusting as a person) but I found a lot of good current goth bands which by the sound I thought were from the 80s. I listen to some Russian post punk and understand all the lyrics (I’m Russian) and now I truly enjoy the music.

I'll be 49 in October. As a teen in the 1980s, I was dorky and ungainly. I was either obese (before 16) or rail thin(16 to 19). I was into photography. I liked taking pictures in old cemeteries, and I was fascinated by monuments and their decay. I liked Poe and HP Lovecraft. The "alternative" kids were the ones who were nice to me, and there were non-spoiled girls. At first, I really just liked post-punk. Eventually, I got into deathrock, darkwave and goth rock. At most I have a permanently sunburned Gomez Addams look, but I've been called an elder goth for some time.

I watched this video YEARS ago now. Back when I first really looked into goth and if I fit into this community. At the time I listened mostly to screamo, some death metal. That was really my range of sounds. I listened to these bands back then and didn’t like them so much. I’m not really sure why but they just didn’t fit me at the time. Now I’m a few years older. I’ve had some more life experience . I’ve calmed down and learned some hard lessons. Now I’m coming back to this and I’m finding sounds that actually do resonate with me. Ones that I had brushed aside when I was younger as not angry sounding enough. I’m glad that I re-found this video. Thank you for making it.

I'm a junior in high school now and while my music taste is very alternative and has a lot of punk influences, my style and atheistic is very much Gothic. I've always struggled finding music in the goth scene i like, which is why i don't really identify as a goth, i look it but i can't get into the music. I remember being quite young (about 10) I started to become very interested in gothic stuff mostly clothes then movies and architecture but I HATED most of the music like it was 1 good song per band and they got old quick, then around 13 I found emo music and I LOVED IT and the fashion of scene and emo was so cool to me but then I found nine inch nails and later on babymetal and gravitated back towards goth, mostly industrial but also hints of Lolita, grunge, emo or hippie stuff, anyway I just thought I'd share that because this seemed like an appropriate video for it also ive seen some of your videos a long time ago but I hadn't subscribed until now, I'm on a binge and I've gotta say keep up the good work 👌

Coming late into the convo... as you can see by my picture I’m not “goth” but I love goth music. Was there in the 90’s saw Bauhaus , souxsie , morrisey, cure, visited qxt s in Jersey. But mostly back in the day we would hang out at friends house listen to music and other things. My friends were a mix of “punk, metal,” whatever we were what we were. I wasn’t committed to a look so I would dress however I felt that day... goth, rocker, norm, Latina, and guess what my friends didn’t care what the hell i dressed like we would all hang out regardless. I feel we were all kids playing and figuring out our identities we allowed people to be themselves and everyone was so worried with their own situations and problems that nobody cared what other people were looking like. We all definitely felt like store bought and cookie cutter “goths, rockers or ravers” were posers. We all appreciated a more edgy authentically created and lived appearance. Anyone that was too perfect or focused on image alone and didn’t live the music, experiences and lifestyle were posers to us back in the day. So yes music lifestyle life view is what held us together not our looks. You can look “goth” and be a jerk you can look “goth” and not be authentic to yourself affecting your experience and that of others. I hope to visit some goth events and I will be going as me, I refuse to dress the part cause I love the music it’s in my blood I don’t need outward validation from anyone to enjoy the music , my life or anything else for that matter. I am what I am. I’m here for the music. I’m here to be me.

I love this video so much! there were actually honestly a few bands i didn’t know of (or knew of but didn’t know what subgenre they were classified under). and the funny thing I thought after your concluding message - Elitist’s intentions are contradictory in value. they want to put people down and keep them out of the subculture for not knowing all the music but then when some of are just trying to learn about it they are basically told to fuck off because since early goths had to figure out the music themselves with no technology etc which is to be appreciaged but overall counterproductive. they will be in it for the right reasons if we show them the right reasons/music.. and don’t get me wrong, I very much understand wanting to protect your subculture from people snaking their way in for the wrong reasons but the thing is not everyone is. it’s hard to tell with fake dark hipsters nowadays lmao it’s pathetic sometimes but if you’re a real goth I think you can spot ones who actually have the heart for it from a mile away. love your videos ♡xx

Nothing wrong with that. The roots of it is in the music anyway.

this was really cathartic as a goth that makes "modern new wave". lmao. it's fascinating how there's so much common ground under the goth umbrella.

Ah, the haul-centric 'goth' youtubers. It's funny, promoting this idea of 'individuality' and yet promoting the same high-priced, low quality brands (honestly, this is most goth brands - the champagne prices, the Primark quality), the same-same look, the vapid consumerism, the buy buy buy buy mentality .... how super-rebellious and 'alternative! But you can see why they do it when they get offered $$$$ enough so they don't have any other form of work other than youtube. Then of course they're trapped in a cycle of produce more of the same or watch their income die.

Good thing youtube isn't my job or I'd be screwed! I couldn't imagine having to rely on companies and sponsorships to pay my rent. Anyone that's willing to sell out the goth scene for cash can't be too passionate about the scene if they're genuinely involved at all.

I've always thought of goth as a form of asceticism, glorifying death as an end to the excessive materialism of mainstream culture, and seeing past the surface because looks don't matter; behind all that jewelry and hairspray and heavy makeup is still a human being

No metal is not goth, however, metal is extremely popular among goths nonetheless. Peter Steele of Type O Negative was influenced by Black Sabbath and metal is also undeniably is very dark, in fact it was the first music in modern times to use dark and horror as a musical influence before even goth.

Yes there are metal goth bands :). Sadly they focus on the guitar technique driven sound that emphasizes speed rather than the more eerie and creepy sounds like Black Sabbath and Dio did, which I personally think would be a better model for 'Metal Goth" than black metal. I have noticed some cross over and influence going both ways over the years. Which makes sense since both are going for the spooky and creepy. Another thing I have noticed is that in metal, the show is on stage, whereas with goth the show is you, the people around you, and your immediate environment. You get to be part of it rather than just see it from afar like in metal which is a really cool thing. This also explains why metal music is so enthralling and attension holding whereas goth music tends to be more back ground and atmospheric to allow you to interact with the spooky world you are in. The two music genre's have different purposes in mind.

Thank you so much for standing up to people who are against musical diversity within the Goth scene which can be different itself depending which country you look at. I recall ads for Depeche Mode nights and that was very much a synonym for a great Goth party. To me Future pop and other electronic darker genres are somewhat a modern version of older beloved by Goth music genres. But a lot of times you can get the impression that many within the scene online do not like an extension and evolution of the scene and rather would prefer a standstill.

I agree. I have gone to clubs for a long time and that stuff was like more modern versions like you say to me. In my opinion there was the '80s stuff and then syntheir '90s stuff that didn't sound the same. Then a lot of the newer 2000's stuff sounds more like the '80s stuff again. And I love it all, but Internet goths will say that "that's not goth" etc. Even though it played at goth nights for decades and only at goth nights... Is it suddenly not goth because people decided or has it never been? Sometimes it comes off from internet goths that bands played at goth nights for decades... The majority "aren't goth just goth adjacent" and aside from the staples pretty much the newer bands that went back to that sound are the only other goth bands. You can be in the scene for 22 years attending goth nights/events almost every weekend, different venues playing a bunch of the same bands and then be like WTF? You are saying most of these bands that have been played at NYC goth nights for over 2 decades "aren't goth"? it is weird to me so I see why it is totally confusing to baby bats just getting into the scene.
