The best way I can describe Gotham Knights in comparison to other Batman Games is it is Slower and Less. Slower in terms of combat and traversal, less in terms of unique gadgetry and story. The story just does a repeat of Arkham Origins story in terms of how events play out. What with a serious event calling the hero(s) to action which cause a prime villain to be suspected of the perpetrator of the event that starts the game but then it turns out later that they’re not the main antagonist but a secondary antagonist. The difference between Origins and Gotham Knights is that for one the main twist is revealed immediately to the players so there’s no mystery or intrigue. And on top of that, where in Origins the Joker while not needed (and everyone wanted to have Black Mask be the main villain) was still done very well that Troy Baker has earned the title of one of the greatest Joker performances (in my opinion). Whereas the Court of Owls is the most interesting antagonist in the game of Gotham Knights and the League of Shadows is just boring and unimaginative. What’s their goal in this game? Literally what they were doing in Arkham Knight, searching for a fucking pit! And now for nitpicks, the lack of a dark atmosphere in Gotham Knights, seriously I think about The Batman how it treated the villains with a sort of horror tone on top of their campiness. But here they’re just lesser versions of themselves from better stories and games along with D tier dialogue. Mr. Freeze was the biggest insult in their roster in my opinion as here he has no sympathetic motivation which was what made him one of the great Batman Villains in the first place! Here in this game he’s just pissed that a dead Batman couldn’t provide him with a cure and now decides to take his little temper tantrum out on Gotham City by doing you guessed it, freeze the city. BORING! Clayface, while imaginative, still not very interesting, there’s a reason Arkham City only had him as a surprise villain in the end game. Penguin is in this game but does fuck all, and Harley Quinn, the idea the devs had for her, rocksteady already did and better. Man bat, had a cool boss fight but not one ANYONE wanted to do 4 times in total! And the League… boring. Been done already and again, they’ve been done BETTER by Rocksteady EVEN in Arkham Knight. Next nitpick, Gotham City: While this game is the first Batman game in a while to have people occupy the city, the world somehow still manages to feel lifeless. The side quests look and feel on par with the NPCs you’d talk to in Dying Light! They’re boring and not memorable. Also, one thing I loved about the Arkham Games is that their worlds while they felt could’ve been more with innocent civilians just going about their every day lives, still had Easter eggs in them, Easter eggs that related to various comics of the Caped Crusader, the characters especially the villains talked in such a way that not only could you tell that Batman and said villains have history, but you could also FEEL it, for example in Arkham Asylum, Joker says to Batman that he looks like he could use a new sidekick, referencing Jason Todd. It’s little things like that which give the Arkham games so much character and none of that is here in Gotham Knights. At least it’s colorful.

I tried liking Gotham Knights, I really did. This is after I've been replaying AK on my PC, in 4k, with Reshade. A friend of mine was looking over my shoulder and was straight up ASTOUNDED by how incredible AK looked. Everything about the game is better...lighting, textures, combat, gadgets, story, voice acting, traversal, physics...the list goes on and on. It's truly a shame that an Unreal Engine 3 game that came out 8 years ago looks better than most new gen games, currently out today. I enjoyed Cyberpunk, I love games that do RayTracing well where the graphics complement the story, atmosphere and the overall experience. Hogwarts Legacy is one such experience, Metro Exodus, and Control are imho shining examples "next gen" graphics done right. The last time I played AK it was in 2016 on PS4 and while I enjoyed it, I played it on a crap 32 in TV with horrible color reproduction and it still blew me away. I only decided to revisit it because of all the Gotham Knights comparisons that have been floating around. What saddens me that Rocksteady is giving us a fairly bland looking looter shooter live service game in the form of Suicide Squad. Such wasted talent. Anyways, couldn't help but rant.

Gotham Knights just fails to capture the weight of the character while grappling or flying which AK nails it with Batman. The fluidity of AK is unmatched compared to GK. The immersion easily breaks in GK as soon as you try to launch glide after a grapple whereas in AK the transition is picture perfect. GK in itself is a decent game with decent mechanics and a good story but as soon as you compare it to AK , it falls flat on its head.

Oddly enough the Batmobile sections which are the most criticised things of the game never gave me any major issues or felt tedious. More like the contrary. Specially after trying Gotham Knights and seen how simple and effective things were, IDK. If I already didnt liked AK's combat, after playing GK I even felt like AK's was even more missable. Wish GK could have the Batmobile tho but cant complain seen how much AK overused it XD

This is why I wont waste money on a next gen console. It's really on the developers as far as game design and attention to detail when this hardware now isn't even necessary. Developers literally can't even keep up as it is. It shows developers 7 years ago were literally trying to maximize the hardware even more so and this is a trend that just continues where developers just get lazier. Not to mention it's basically the same franchises and gameplay I've been playing for years and there is literally no innovation at all occuring. There is more hype and nonsense than actual games being made. You can make a great game with 2 gigaflops of performance or whatever vs the crap like cyberpunk they are shovelling now that isn't even finished. All I see is 4k with less detail and the same basic game.

As a Cyberpunk pre-order (yes Im a clown for this) I agree that the game was released without being finished but now, a year later, the developers have made an effort to fix many of the games problems and the developers themselves support modding that allows the game too look even better and more stable for users. And to be totally honest it is much better than this garbage they just released. This is the wrong way to think about it. Your decade old technology cannot compete against modern tech. Just because devs maximized in the past and it was good, doesn't mean new tech is pointless. If you maximize on the new tech, you can in theory get a 2x better product. It's just a matter of the developer maximizing what they have. You also need a new console to be able to run the better looking, better performing games when they DO come out. I think one of the biggest issues with Gotham Knights was the choice in team. Stylistically it's less a bat family game and more a titans game or an outlaws game. It doesn't feel like it WANTS to be a Batman game. I also question WB Games choice in pushing two live service co-op games as their main DC games until the Wonder Woman game. Like Gotham Knights could have been a really fun single player we are Robin tactical RPG or a Flash open world RPG or just anything else.

In defense of gotham knights, I want to say that the only thing they did cool is the scale of the city 1 to 1. While in Batman AK, as in almost all ps4 open-world games, all buildings and objects are reduced relative to the player, which makes the city look a bit toy. I would really like to see such games as Batman AK and Witcher 3 re-released on new generation consoles and PCs with new game worlds on a 1 to 1 scale, but, unfortunately, I think no one will naturally bother with this, since judge by that what people write, only I see this difference.)

I started playing Gotham Knights recently and I had certain impressions, pure speculation, that it wasn't supposed to be the way it was, that it was tinkered with. That initial sequence with Ras Al Ghul, the bad story, the poorly made models and the non-existent details suggest this to me. In my head they wanted to make an unofficial sequel to Arkham Knight, in the same way that Origins was an unofficial prequel to the entire series but they were removed and directed to something else. I wonder what this game would be like if it really were a sequel to Knight where we would alternately control the characters on missions and Red Hood would be the anti-hero and not necessarily part of the team. This was the time for us to have a game in the Batman universe with people on the street and they ruined everything.

Arkham Kinight looks amazing even 8 years or so later. It would have been more interesting to show the batmobile crashing into things and showing explosions compared to Gotham Knights dull physics. I played this game on pc at lowest settings, looked better than Gotham knights from what I’ve seen. I now have a ps5 and played the ps4 version of Arkham knight and ps5 version of Gotham knights. Arkham knight looks better than Gotham

I tried to install Arkham Knight again after finishing the mediocre Gotham Knights, I understand that in some aspects it is still clearly superior to it (direction, narration, combat system, artistic aesthetics of the city) but let's not kid ourselves, the 8 years apart you can see them all, the graphics of arkham knight are significantly dirtier, especially when driving the Batmobile, especially while it's raining, an aspect that I also found in 2015. clearly playing it in 2k doesn't help, but I don't think that in 4k it would be much more clean.
