I avoided Gotham for a long time because I HATE the "lets make a superhero show without the superhero!" gimmick. But I kept seeing appreciation for it as time went on and finally gave it a go and LOVED it. It kinda plays like a if Batman Forever had a prequel show. It's bold and colorful and campy and highly entertaining. If the darker elements of Schumacher's original Batman Forever were retained, I feel like it would play kinda like Gotham. How a network TV Gotham show managed to have more memorable and impressive visuals than many superhero films today speaks to just how lazy a certain superhero franchise has gotten. Gotham itself has real personality and feels lived in and not just a generic setting for the settings. And the character work is largely very well done and satisfying to see.

Even season 5 despite easily being the weakest season and filled with issues I think also had a lot of great ideas and themes and honestly was pretty decent. Sadly the closest thing we got to a Gotham continuation was that mediocre *Batwoman* show... in the sense that Gotham's Renée Montoya came back for Batwoman season 3, still played by Victoria Cartagena. And the Victor Zsasz from that show (played by Alex Morf, that we had already seen in Gotham season 5) was very, _very_ clearly inspired by Anthony Carrigan's incarnation of the character. There are a couple other nods to the show in it, but I don't recommend watching it just for that; or at all. For every good thing in *Batwoman* (solid Luke Fox/Batwing, solid Poison Ivy in season 3, really good Black Mask as the season 2 Big Bad, etc) , there are 10 terrible ones

Great video! And I agree about Gotham’s “Joker Problem” however I always had a way to fix the “Joker Problem”. Instead of killing off Jerome they should've let him live and still had Jeremiah come into the plot, so fans of either character still had their version of Joker in the show. Also each of them would’ve had a different reason for obsessing over Bruce. Jeremiah is focused on Bruce because of his friendship with him while Jerome is focused on Bruce because of his hatred. Then come season 5 for, whatever reason, they all, Jerome, Jeremiah, and Bruce, converge at Ace Chemicals and both Jerome and Jeremiah fall into the chemical. Then later we see that only one came out leaving the mystery of who it is since they’re burnt/scarred beyond recognition and their memory could be affected/wiped since they fell into acid. Fans could speculate about which one it is while also leaving speculation about if the other brother is still out there.
@superiorspider-nava1943 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, Jeremiah hates Bruce more. I mean, as he said: Haven't you paid attention?
@darkholmehospital127 ай бұрын
Well thought, the idea is similar to something I wrote five years ago on Pup's Alternate final part2 video. If you interested to read, here is the full comment, it gives some idea on how this plotline could be set: Sorry for the long text but this might interest you guys. I got recently a sketch of a strange idea so how Gotham could have done differently with the Joker origin story. This idea would “solve” the following “issues”: - Keep the beloved Jerome alive - Have a Joker with semi unknown identity - (+bonus) Have Jeremiah and Jerome at the same time as both “Half/Protos Jokers” In this scenario Jerome never dies in 4x18 and instead framed again at Arkham with the help of Jeremiah. In a similar fashion than Batman Telltale, Jeremiah would have to spread the insanity gas on Wayne’s Enterprise board employees in 4x20, as they discovered that Jeremiah’s technology can be used with wrong intentions and wanted to keep the generator safe from him, doesn’t trusting Jerome’s brother. As Jerome followers break in, they force Bruce to wear a gas mask, but strangely the gas doesn’t affect Jeremiah, that’s here he would remove is makeup to reveal he was already exposed to it. Most of the events happens the same until Ace Chemicals episode, where Jerome would break from Arkham. Then Jerome wants to disrupt Jeremiah plans in order to throw the city even more the chaos in the city (could have been the part of spreading the chemicals into the river) and at the same time challenging Bruce to stop him, definitely bounding them in a Mark Hamillesque Batman/Joker relationship. Feeling that would compromise is own plan regarding Bruce (Parents re-murder), Jeremiah pushes Jerome into the chemicals. Bruce would attempt to save him but instead we would have the same kind of scene as 4x18 with Jerome’s death, and Jerome would let himself fall into chemicals. Then Bruce and Jeremiah confronts as the same as 5x07, and Jeremiah falls too in the chemicals. Here is the fun part: the twins are extracted from chemicals with severe injuries, one of them as definelty died from severe burns, and the other is still alive but with no brain activity. The thing as their body and face are so severely damaged and they share the same DNA, it’s impossible to know which one survived and which one died, the surviving twin would be called J Valeska instead or Jerome or Jeremiah. 10 years after, Jim would ask him if he was Jeremiah or Jerome while attempting to save is daughter. J would responds a cryptic manner that would suggest he knows who he really is but playing with it in Nolan’s Joker manner, adopting the behaviour of both Jeremiah and Jerome at the same time to maintain the ambiguity. At the end, there is no way to know who is really is J. That all, I’m conscious that this idea is quite a sketch but I find it enough interesting to share it.

1. Harvey Bullock was one of the police officers in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, so his appearance in Gotham is actually his second live action rendition, much more comic accurate. 2. Gotham got the reaction it did from the audience because it was marketed and promoted as a Batman series without a Batman, when the reality was-- this series answered the question, "What if Dick Tracy was named Jim Gordon and lived and worked in Gotham before Batman appeared?" 3. I absolutely agree that there are three inarguably standout performances on this show-- with several notable runners up-- Penguin and Riddler, who received the blessings of a five-season character story arc and development, and Alfred, the oft-overlooked manservant of the Wayne's, exploring his character challenge of caring for a PTSD child who would one day grow up to be the world's greatest detective. Notable mentions: Zsasz, a very stylish and metrosexual contract killer. Joker -- who's only drawback was that the series couldn't decide on which Joker origin to go with. Hugo Strange -- BD Wong could have phoned this one in, but the character was so nicely set up, it wouldn't have mattered. I would love to point that out that while it was airing, the only show on television that was even remotely close to the insanity that this show presented each week was Riverdale. And that's a pretty impressive claim. LOL
@randallflagg37007 ай бұрын
You're wrong about Harvey Bullock being in Tim Burton's *Batman 89* ... apparently he was originaly supposed to show up in *Batman Returns* but Tim Burton decided to remove him from the script. *Gotham* was his first live action appearance, and Donal Logue did a great job... I agree with you about pretty much everything else though. Anthony Carrigan's Victor Zsasz wasn't comic accurate at all, but the character was so much fun that i stopped caring about accuracy pretty quick. They even paid an homage to his version of the character in the (terrible) show *Batwoman* , in which Zsasz (played by fellow *Gotham* co-star Alex Morf) is clearly based on the *Gotham* version. Like in *Gotham* , he plays a killer for hire instead of just being a serial killer, and he uses all kinds of weapons (including a rocked launcher like in "Gotham") instead of only using knives... he also has a sense of humor, makes little quips, and dresses very stylishly instead of being a complete psycho who is most often running around shirtless.

Give it a few years and the show could easily come back with everyone the correct age they could have the pilot be a recreation of the final ep from Bruce’s perspective in a improved bat suit

I don't care if they never call him the Joker or if it's technically Jeremiah who's supposed to be the clown Prince of crime, Cameron Monaghan as Jerome Valeska is the best on-screen Joker there's ever been. The scene where he storms into that real estate office was some of the best Joker stuff I've ever seen.😂
@timsimpson6019 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have been reading Batman for years (I’m 35) and Jerome was literally joker from the comics on screen. Also Cameron just happens to have the physical look. Ledger and jack were amazing as joker but they didn’t look like joker in terms of build and other little details

@@timsimpson6019 I honestly would be happy if they recast Joker in the Matt Reeves Batman franchise to Cameron Monaghan. It'll probably never happen, but a guy can dream.

The first couple seasons of Arrow definitely helped me when I was in a really dark place... When Arrow started, I was constantly in trouble and dealing with mental health stuff, and for some reason, the first season helped me get my life centered properly. Then when season 2 started, I was put in a RTF facility, and when I got out aftsr 6 months in there, the show helped me find a way to re-adjust to being back home. The facility I was in really did a lot to break me mentally, and when I got out, I felt totally hollow and angry, much like Oliver did in the first season, and watching his character adjust to normal life and leave the truama behind, I was able to relate and work through things in my life too... Its one of the reasons I loved that show for the first few seasons.

Here me out: A sequel movie wherein Jeremiah takes son the moniker of the Joker and assembles the Criminal Underworld of Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman to take on Batman. Meanwhile, Batman (played by David Mazouz, naturally) has to bring together Robin and Batgirl to stop them. And maybe Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face.

I gotta say: The Balloonman episode was amazing and it was nice to see a new character that felt like an old-school Batman villain.

Honestly, the Batsuit wasn't even their fault. They had a really good version set up (the one on the S5 posters, where it looks slightly more like the Bale suit) but Warner Bros struck it down, because it couldn't resemble basically ANY of the other live-action suits, so they had to rush out another version in time for the finale. This was just another case of the studios being super strict about what the showrunners wanted to do, and hurting it in the process.

Gotham wasn’t perfect and the finale was disappointing but I STILL enjoyed the show Great cast and featured my favorite interpretations of the characters

I think a final season 6 of the Gotham Batman would be alright. Do a villian of the week type of deal.
@deadlvrs3 ай бұрын
It's just so camp that I can't help but think about it constantly. And I (controversially?) /love/ the twin Jokers plotline and will die for Jeremiah. I just have to imagine Jerome is reanimated after the finale because nothing stays dead in Gotham.

1:10 Maggie Smith said it best, and I'm paraphrasing, but she said at her age (in her 80s) that it felt as though she was having breakfast again every 30 minutes.

No offence to anyone else but Penguin is actually a genuis and combined with riddler (non is guy, Penguin and is more teacher and learner wish is shown when Riddler is “born”) same as Joker is “born” is great. But Penguin uses everyone and all actions to rule everyone. Survivor and “brain” off villains?
