The feeling of immersion and presence you get while playing this game has been pretty much unmatched for me. I remember wanting to find cover and a cozy fire when it used to rain and always felt safe in the camp compared to the outside. It seemed like a place that was ALIVE and evolving.

The early 2000s atmosphere of this game is just beautiful. I love the mines, the story, setting, and the changing world. I just downloaded it to Switch and can't wait to play this piece of art.

A lot of very late 90s early 2000s rpgs had atmosphere and something special. It seems a lot of that went out the window once the Xbox 360 came out and consoles became first development platform instead of pc. This was in multiple genres. They also seemed to focus more on sound back then. Places had reverb and different eax environmental audio. Something that got cut from development when Vista came out and no one had hardware sound anymore. Devs were like they all use realtek so why bother. You don't have games like theif or Gothic where you here conversations and footsteps. Where different material and rooms sound different. The lower poly counts and fog or obstruction for lod meant the world had to be crafted with immersion in mind based on what they could do. You couldn't be lazy on design.

Gothic 1 and 2 are amazing expurience. There is no game like that till this day. I recommend this game to everyone. Even PB after G2 could not recrate this masterpiece. Nice to hear that this port is so good.

There are. Later games from Piranha Bytes, such as Risen and Elex. They kinda do Gothic with different names over and over again. They get the first game in the series kind of clumsy but lovable and then the second and third (in case of Risen) get somewhat worse. I do enjoy the atmosphere and the world building they create, so I enjoyed Elex, for example, even though I understand why nowadays gamers could dislike it. If you really like Gothic you should try those out.

They are recrating the old version with very little money and the ceo's wellfare cheques, to put this recrated version in digital store soon not old crate packaging to save further cost while renting out his parents home.

To me Gothic 2 is the best in the series. Kinda tragedy how Gothic 1 was good, Gothic 2 great, Gothic 3 had potential to be really great but they screw up combat system totally so it's pretty frustrating. Then there were Arcania:Gothic 4 that was final nail on the coffin. I played probably halfway through and damn that game was boring and shitty. I didn't even die once. Don't know if the deveplopers were like "okey, everyone complained about Gothic 3 combat being too hard, so now we need to make it really easy and it will be perfect" and ofcourse it was also really clumsy and outdated for game thats was made in around 2010 anyway. I hope that someday they make Gothic 5 with all the good stuff from Gothic 1-3 +smooth controls and graphics(probably will never happen).

​@@MrJerkkeriGothic 4 was made by a different developer for Jowood who had the publishing rights. Pyranha Bytes made Risen instead and later they got the rights to Gothic from Jowood. I really hope they can do another solid Gothic game. 1 and 2 are definitely some of my favorite games ever.

Gothic was a nightmare on my PC, even patched up properly, after about 20hrs it just kept crashing, so am looking forward to finishing it, this time!

Nope, it doesn't work that way, only scripts and assets will be updated. Engine side won't be touched because of mods, it'll cause conflicts. CM of gothic side doesn't know shit. You'll ask him if you can do X with the game, he'll say it's fine, so you pull through with the thing, and the next day he says you can't do that.

I've kind of permanently stored my Switch since getting a Steam Deck but this comes close to tempting me to pull it back out. I hope we get an official updte on the PC version. Would be nice to be able to just play it without needing all the fan patches too.

Hey, great video! I got gothic on switch myself twice due to THQ Nordic store not delivering the physical version on time so i got the digital and kept the physical sealed, I've pre-ordered Gothic 2 on switch as well and can't wait to complete it too. I also have a modded V1 switch with FPS counter and overclock options so I'm more than happy to capture any footage of the game for you if you would like.

Gothic 1 has always been one of my nostalgia games that i somehow keep picking up every year at least once, so having it on switch and playing it a new platform would be pretty neat. However, i got to say, i really love the janky pc controls as well though.

The controls are still janky, they are just mapped to a controller! Controlling the character didn’t suddenly become a modern 3D game. Like if you turn with L stick you’ll do a long walk around. So you turn with your R stick, which you are also controlling camera with, as one example of the jank. You get used to it much faster than PC, but there is a little learning curve to adapt

Very cool to be able to play gothic on a handheld. Suprised how well the gamepad controls work, there was a lot that could've gone wrong. For example you can still roast meat and forge swords fast if press A/B in the right rhythm. Haven't tried the motion controls yet, really liked them in the doom port but I don't think I need them for Gothic.

The only problems I've noticed from a couple of hours playing so far is that the music sometimes skips and there are two goblins by cavalorns hut that are not hostile even if you attack them. Overwise it seems like a great port so far.

What a time to be alive. But on the other hand it makes sense - Gothic controls were inspired by OG Tomb Raider, which were really popular on old consoles like PS1. But how we're supposed to get upgraded ore armor with Stone turning hostile? Your performance while capturing might be similar to those folks with weak PCs back then - it wasn't a time when 2+ years old were able to run most games like these days where progress is slower.

Still waiting for a patch. Too many breaking changes. - goblins have no ai, they just stand - There is bug in which if you lose a battle your weapon may disappear forever - quick jump back while fighting doesn’t work (it gives you invisibility for a second and is required while fighting monsters) unless you press down arrow+b - many quests do not trigger properly - I can’t join old camp There is a lot of more.

Gothic is a masterpiece and deserves all the love and I'm glad it was ported to Switch. I discovered this game in a gaming magazine in my early teens and felt in love with it instantly. 17 years later it's still my favourite game of all time along with G2 NotR and I always come back to beat it at least once a year.

Been playing this today. So happy to have a nice port on consoles now. Can you tell me how I tell it which hand I want to put a melee weapon in? If ZL and ZR both have weapons I don’t know how to put it into ZL without unequipping all weapons first. It only ever replaces ZR

I never heard of this game till last month. To be honest I thought it was one of those crappy mobile games that are flooded on eshop. I gave it a go. And it’s real hard but after you get the hang of stuff it’s real fun. Elderscroll 3 vibes. Great music and atmosphere. I’d even say it does a lot of things better than morrowind. It’s been a slow grind but very satisfying when you figure out another mechanic or quest.

They're currently some pretty shity bug is happening on it though. Most of all the goblins do not move and cannot be hid so a lot of experience is lost currently. Quick tabbing inventory from other for merchants making them cost more than they are worth. The nameless hero will talk for some NPCs. Cor kaloms chest causes him to attack you when you touch it, because they have simply made chests aggro npcs if they are near you when you touch them. Otherwise a very well done port.

the cool thing about gothic was the cheat console commands were you could summon about everything in the game. i doubt the switch version has this. I would like that someone would do a re-release of DIE BY THE SWORD with this swing mechanic. this game was made for this mechanic even before the mechanic was invented, if that is even possible

I had a slow start. The game really doesn’t give you many options in the beginning. I was also pissed off that I wasted 20 skill points on pickpocketing, thinking it was the same as it was in Gothic 2, but pickpocketing is absolutely worthless in this game. This caused me to be behind in magic circles and having to deal with the orc cemetery with the wind fist spell, instead of 3rd circle spells such as fire ball, lightning ball or ice block. Magic overall is also not as viable as it is in Gothic 2. Be that as it may, I’m still having a blast with the game. I’m currently hunting down the focus stones. It’s the first time I’m playing it without cheats. When I was a kid, I was obviously not as good at video games, but I also hate the mouse and don’t play anything that requires it. So I used to play the game with just the keyboard, not having good combat skills, but with cheats enabled. However, since the game came out on the switch, I can play it with native controller support and I absolutely love it!!! It is truly a dream come true.

The map screen is pretty bad. The map is displayed as 16:9, making it squished, and it's too tiny considering the size of the window it's in. The player arrow is also too large which makes reading the map difficult.

If they'd ported Gothic 2 notr and did something like like spine integration with it, that would be extremely smartass idea. Imagine all those mods like returning, archolos, odyssey etc on your switch. Gothic 1 is nice and it's great it's not a cheap port, but I worry it won't sell that great, the first game isn't that replayable.

As a fan of Risen 1, who never played any game by that developer, and all the time hearing about Gothic and how good the game is I feel guilty for not venturing in the world of Gothic. Game doesn't work on my Win11 pc I tried every possible way, so having a Switch version just made the opportunity possible for me. Also every time I think about Gothic I go and play Morrowind.
