The Lair of Voltaire

The Lair of Voltaire

7 жыл бұрын

Inspiration in Los Angeles leads our hosts to finding bat-themed items with which to decorate the Lair. In doing so we discover the difference between "high design" and "Halloween" decorating. Ultimately, Voltaire realizes that nothing beats populating the space with REAL bats!

I'm unsure on how I feel about taxidermy but I think this video did a great job on showing how to get them and alternative ways as well as being respectful of people's opinions so I really likes this episode

I think the main issue is about how you'd get a carcass for taxidermy. So if it becomes commercialised for the mainstream market, you might get a rise in poaching, people might breed animals solely for taxidermy, etc. Taxidermy in and of itself might be how you'd feel about treating a corpse in general.

those bats are so cute!! At school we had to do an assignment on endangered species, I was the only one who thought of bats, specifically the lesser dawn bat, people shoot them when they see them, partly because they think they carry and spread diseases - it's good to see the facts getting out there, you are more likely to get rabbies from other animals. thank-you for another fantastic episode

Okay, what do you call a vegan goth? A fruit bat! No but really this was my favorite episode so far definitely, and as a gothic vegan I LOVE taxidermy. As long as the animal was ethically sourced (not killed for this reason, died of natural causes) then I am completely okay with it. I have a few bats myself, and I also preserve roadkill that I find.

Bats like Goths: often misunderstood!!! I have a bat house in my yard. they love to hang out there. We have a street light that attracts mosquitos and other bugs. So it's a great deal for both of us! We actually had one fly into our old house. We just opened the windows to allow him to fly out. We didn't chase him, afraid we would stress him out. He didn't fly outside. He instead decided I looked friendly. And he landed on my back pocket.( I was in cargo shorts) So I slowly walked outside. He stayed on my pocket for a good while. Then climbed up my shirt. And finally flew way. It was so amazing to see him up close! We took a picture of him on my pocket and I sent it to my brother with the caption, "I told you I was BAT ASS!" I thought he'd get a good laugh out of it. He calls me the new Snow White because animals just come up to me for some reason.

if this posted 2xs, chalk it up as I got too involved with the episode.... Listen Voltaire, Mister_Caitlin's creations are exquisite! I have crocheted for years and she makes me feel like I've just been practicing! She has found her crochet niche, something I am still searching for. Her stunning creations could never be duplicated from a pattern, which makes them much more desirable! I would like to acknowledge you for highlighting her work in your episode. Crochet is usually viewed as an olde tyme past time, however it has developed into much more, no longer is it your grandmas hobby. Thank you for noticing the different dimensions of such a forgotten craft. I recently found a beauty in bats from a couple different things that happened. I was trapped in my house for 2 days by the cutest, furriest little guy who decided to perch himself right outside my front door. I wouldn't allow anyone to scare him away, yet I was so afraid to disturb him that I just didn't leave...until he did. I watched him during the day, peered out at him during the evening. His little fluffy brown fur was the most adorable thing! In my time spent inside, I decided to get on the internet and find a taxidermied little guy of my own and to "face my fears" of all the horrible scary things I'd grown up hearing about bats. In my search I came across some very....interesting things that I can not unsee on Instagram, but I also found @the.glass.coffin who had some beautiful pieces for sale! I haven't purchased anything yet, however the piece that I am in love with is going to be more than fitting in my search for the perfect Vintage Gothic Decor for our bedroom. I absolutely love the antler piece in your episode, however theglasscoffin.com has a little guy hanging in a lantern and I just have to have him!! Although, I plan to create something in the style of the antler piece as well. I am searching for the best VGD that I can decorate our room with and some pieces I can sprinkle around the rest of the home as well. Most of all, I need to learn to drape the beautifully haunting material in that vintage way that just finishes off the whole look. Thank you for your episodes and finding Mister_Caitlin and her crochet creations! I am anxious to discover what the rest of your episodes hold. BTW I love the book table so much that I am planning to recreate two of them for side tables for our bedroom!! But with my own "twist".

Now, THIS is an episode I can get into! I love bats of all species, from the tiny ones I saw in a Tennessee cave to the huge Flying Foxes in New Zealand, and including vampire bats, of course! I have built bat boxes and mounted them on the south side of my house so we have a thriving colony to keep down the mosquitoes. I love to sit on my deck at sunset and watch them swoop and swirl around, catching breakfast! I disagree with killing bats to make decorations, but if someone finds a dead one that is fresh enough to taxidermy, that's fine with me.

I enjoyed this video. Years ago my late Fiance and I stepped into a bookstore that sold a lot of Occult decor. I went there to buy some black candles, and mounted in a shadow box was a bat! I was both interested in buying it, but also very creeped out by seeing it on display. I bought my candles instead. I believe they were asking $175 for the framed little blood sucker. I doubt the store is even in business anymore. I never could get past the creepiness of the taxidermy bat though. They look awesome, but my cat would love to make one of those bats her astronomically expensive cat toy. 🙂

I adore bats.🦇🦇🦇 In Darwin which is at the top of Australia there are huge fruit bats 🦇everywhere. A lot of residents see them as pests but then again it's better than having a crocodile🐊in their backyard, & yes that's happened on occasions too. It's so fun watching all the bats🦇together flying over the apartment in huge amounts. I've held a tame fruit bat in Darwin as well.🦇I don't live there but go there at least once a year. It was fantastic to hold one and "her" (fruit bat)🦇 wings felt like the finest most fragile leather & her fur was so incredibly soft. Like Voltaire I fed her some fruit too which she loved. Then I got to hold her & believe me she was a lot bigger & with very black fur quite different than the bat featured with Voltaire. Australia has many types of 🦇 bats including the rare "ghost bats"🦇, which are actually white & their wings are eerily see through. I saw them inside a beautiful cave in Katherine, which is also in The Northern Territory of Australia. We have bats here too down south even in the city's large old trees but unfortunately not where we live as we are beside the sea. I am lucky enough to fly to Darwin at least once a year & love seeing all the bats which usually fly over where I stay at twilight. The wildlife is incredible there & the tropical plants, waterfalls, natural water/swimming holes, waterways & aboriginal rock art is so beautiful. Also the people of Darwin really know how to party. 😂 lol The Northern Territory is classed as the "last frontier of Australia" & it truly is. Kakadu National Park which is 3 hours drive out of Darwin has thousands of species of rare wildlife of all kinds. You would love it Voltaire however it's very hot & humid so you'd have to wear some "goth style shorts". Lol Just thought I'd share some Australian "bat info" with your fans. As always love this show this episode is awesome because it features an actual live bat.🦇🦇🦇

Love the DIY aspects of this series, but really enjoyed the bats! Thanks for bringing in the ethical aspects of the bat trades. Bats are incredible creatures. Some Australian bats species urinate on those peeps they like- marking their fave territories- and smaller species and microbats do fly into clouds of goth teased hair... it happened to me on a hot, dark night in rural Malaysia. An experience both scary and amazing.

I have two pieces of bat "taxidermy", and I love them both. One is a Long Eared Bat which died naturally in my own roof, and I found fully desiccated, and the other is a piece set in resin, which is again one that died of natural causes, but it captivity. It's perfectly possible to have ethically sourced taxidermy and specimens. That said, I used to live/work in a 500 year old shooting lodge in North Wales, and that was full of rather bizarre and dubious Victorian taxidermy.

You mentioned in a newsletter that you wanted to check out New Hope. If you get there, there's a gargoyle shop that's very similar. Love the episode. :)

I can't say enough good things about the Gothic Homemaking series, it's informative, funny and includes lots of options for people to choose how to make the style their own. My favorite part of the episodes it's usually the DIY project, but in this one I really enjoyed the small talk about bats at the end! I'm really happy the show is still going on, and I'll make sure to recomend it to people so it gets the attention it deserves. Thank you so much for your hard work on this project Voltaire!!

Well I gotta say, you were definitely a good sport about it! Love your laugh! My son is a world class taxidermist, so our house pretty much looks like a museum. No bats yet though...my hubby is NOT goth. *sigh*

I really appreciate that you featured Joseph D'Angeli on the show. Conservation of wildlife (especially animals that are traditionally despised; bats being an example though reptiles and amphibians are my first loves) is very important to me, so I like that you found room for this in your series about DIY house decoration. That said, I was kind of disappointed that we didn't get to see Joseph D'Abgeli present his argument against taxidermied decorations on camera. I am curious as to what his specific problems with it are. I saw that some other people have expressed concern about how these animals were prepared. To me, there is a big difference between an animal that was preserved after dying of natural causes (or roadkill) and an animal that was killed specifically in order to preserve it for aesthetic purposes. Sorry for the essay, but this really bothered me.

Looks like a wee pupper with wings. About taxidermy, personally, I think the main issue revolves around obtaining a carcass.

Gotta say, checking this video out for the first time and checking the date... Yeti eating a bat either aged horribly or beautifully. So does the 'Die in a plane crash!' line. Either way, delightfully morbid, as always. And I loved the bit at the end, respectful discussion may as well be a precious metal these days...

I do hope the taxidermy bats were ethically & sustainably sourced. As long as they are, I don't see a problem decorating with them. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Loved the live bats, though!

A lot of my friends are bat researchers. I’ve done some mist netting and tagging with a few of them, and I’ve got to say bars are such sweet critters. Much nicer than the stories you hear. That said, I have been smacked in the face by bats swooping too low for their prey while I’m running near agriculture fields, or just out camping and going on night time nature excursions.

I have cast iron one - but I painted it with gloss black Hammerite. I got a vintage (maybe antique) brass bat hook, too, that was a lot more 'rustic' in design, which looked a bit garish in shiny golden brass, but got spray-painted black, which improved it a lot. There's purple lighting in my study too.
