Having elephants instead of boars or rhinos certainly shows the ceiling of the bonus. Perhaps Goths are now a good alternative to Mongols on high hunt maps like valley or megarandom. I like this food bonus better than the Inca bonus specifically because it makes Goth options other than infantry more viable. It's great to see Goths finally get some eco love, and it's thematically appropriate too. At this point the +5 against boars is a legacy bonus and intrinsically as a part of the civ as Chinese starting with 6 vils.

I kinda feel like the Goths used to be insane on lower levels and very poor on higher levels. I think this will just make them super strong in sub 1000 games and decent at best at high levels.

@@jeroen92 Yeah, but that just makes there boar food bonus even more decisive. Also you have to remember that losing villagers to boars at that level isn't really that uncommon so there attack bonus helps a lot.

@@jeroen92 oh they do. i dont think everyone has realized that AOE2 has a dedicated playerbase, who all probably watch Hera, and Viper, and etc. Players at lower ranks are trying out the things they SEE in these videos. they might not do it as well, but they attempt the shit. ive fcuking seen it.

I've only recently made it to 1k elo but i've been trying to push deer for a long time all the way back to 800, same thing with the boar tc thing I try it not everytime but whenever it feels doable. I'm generally just so impressed with the level of players around this elo these days.

Let's see your take on Spanish. I have seen the best benefit on closed maps like arena where you can go fast feudal (19 pop) then get horse collar and double bit. Pop some farms etc. Send 2 long distance gold miners without building mining camp. Get wheelbarrow in feudal and go up to castle age with around 27 vills and wheelbarrow. You reach castle age a bit later (17 min) but the economy is so good from early double bit, horse collar and wheel and no mining camp so more farms. That you can go insta 4 tc and have them all pumping for a great boom.

Goths aren't relegated to infantry spam. Their Cavalry Archers and stables are decent enough to warrant going for depending on your opponent's strategy.

Here was my idea (MANY MANY MANY Have had this before me), but Vietnamese + Magyars in a team on an open map can lame very well given the 'Kill Wolves in 1 Hit' is on the Magyar villagers meaning they can aggressively lame. But now Viet + Goths (The TRUE Rivals) could come together and lame for extra food on goths for a strong food-position in early Feudal. I like the idea... and yes given Viet's lack of bonuses, buffs & reworks in patches - much like my Quinn in League (They just forget about heroes in that game alongside my civics in Stellaris, etc.) - I think it's more than fine to use their starting ability as you actually end up losing something yourself in (re)turn (which kind of makes it only a partial buff)!

Tbh - if you are laming boar - go for it. Its part of the game. It takes some skill to find and lure the boar, and you are sacrificing something (either scout hp, scouting, or vill time) - sheep is luck based.

Yeah but basing strategy around laming isn't ideal, it is not a 100% success. Practicing proper opening is better than practicing laming, not like there's anything to practice aside from praying you didn't get intercepted by wolves or scout.

Or against evasive Knights if they are running circles around your infantry. Also congrats on those donations

Question: given that even without trying particularly hard or going extra vills you almost had 800 food when you hit feudal. Would you think it possible at all to have a fast castle build for goths that is viable in ladder? Or is that still too punishable? It just almost seemed like you could have made it easily with only 21vils or something insane like that.

Maybe its possible, but with 21 vills in feudal you will get to castle with 23-24 that just wot give you a good eco to go for a sustainable strat (kt or xbows). Perhaps something crazy like an all-in monk-siege without vill production but at those levels its really punisheable.

The worst pathing in on the deers and like units. They will just go in completely random directions sometimes. Villager pathing isn't great, but usually not an issue.

Goths were always good in late game, I think. They don't get the full version of any unit, but their tech tree has always been pretty large and they have lots of options, plus extra pop. They even get gunpowder. I think they'll do pretty well and we'll see them in King of the Desert.

Not 100% convinced I remember the upload where you picked turks went full hussar after the buff and thought it would be more viable. I think in reality people will premil drush or do other things to prevent the hunt from coming in. It's good under good circumstances.

No they are not good. Their hunt should provide 50% more food for them to be a viable civ. 20% is too little. Adding to that, maybe in the next patch, the dev should let their hunters gather food without dropping them at mills or TC?

Not dropping off hunt would be way overpowered, even without lasting longer. You could lame the shit out of your opponent, 2 Goth vils can take down a boar together, and the resource rate would even eclipse Mongols 40% gather rate. Also Khmer actually have historical inspiration for their no drop off bonus, there is none for Goths.
