my entire childhood in one piece of music. Watching Dr. Who was a weekly routine, that was truly wonderful. Orbital remixing this timeless themetune is the perfect blend old meets new in the most amazing way!

Always felt Orbital should cover this tune - and when they did, they made it sound like it was always an Orbital tune!!! IMO, one of the best electronic / dance cover tunes EVER.

I remember this night like it was yesterday. A packed field, happy faces and Phil & Paul kickin' it large. I went to their last ever live performance at Maida Vale (R.I.P John Peel, you were a true gem), and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Thanks Phil & Paul for giving us many memories of raves/clubs in the late 80's & early 90's, Glasto in the sun & rain, individual and progressive tracks like this, and head-mounted maglites. We will miss you, and thanks for the memories.

The first time I heard this was a revelation. Of course! It just made perfect sense. What a genius idea. The surprising thing is why no one ever did it before Orbital. I mean, the Dr Who theme is electronic music from the earliest era of "techno" - old old old old old skool!
@davidsirett55602 жыл бұрын
the group mankind did a fairly decent version of the theme tune back in the 70s

Dr Who is very possibly the most timeless sounding TV-show theme ever.It must have sounded very futuristic in the 60's.Orbitals version is great too.

Don't condemn all live electronic music to 'press-play-and-jump-around'. Aint no law says electronic music is hands-off and 90% prepared earlier. NOTHING stopping musicians performing 100% hands-on, meaning if they suddenly lifted their hands, the music would turn to chaos, lose rhythm, or fall flat. You don't need a sequencer before it's "electronic music", that's just 1990s thinking. Electronic drums, synth, FX, instruments and machines played live by people can be electronic music too.

Got that jolt discovering a CD of Edwin Astley's "Secret Agent" and "The Saint", expecting some mis-orchestrated drivel and took a chance -- and sure enough, it was all original tracks from the original series (Plus! The original theme from "The Avengers", which somehow got 'added-on'!) 'Found Orbital's cover of Ron Grainer's great "Dr. Who" theme some years ago; this performance is different, but just as fun.

Actually, it was written by Ron Grainer, and Delia Derbyshire and Dick Mills spliced bits of audio tape together to make the music. It's covered in an extra on one of the first two DVDs. (I got the box set and can't remember if it was Unearthly Child or The Daleks that had the extra.)

I really do like this sort of music. Many years ago I saw Tangerine Dream in a church in Germany. They were really busy keeping all the oscillators going, along with minimal tape back up. I can fully understand how atmospheric these concerts are. Also, having tried to make some of this type of music, I can now appreciate that putting it together is not as easy as one might think. I have some Chemical Brothers, Front 242 etc but I am old and in need of education on what to listen to!

Even more amazing than this track is the fact that samples were not harmed in the making of it! DW was a big influence on the brothers and it was a live treat for at least 6yrs before they had it put out on a record. Look at me with the facts, huh? Quality tune

all the people saying "what a waste of a venue" or "techno should never be live", i think i speak for 99% of people when i say lipsyncing, pressing a play button, or a band playing live is all the same because at the end of the day your at the concert for the atmosphere, friends, to party and pay tribute to your favourite artists, everyones having fun and thats what its all about, to a rock band playing the same song 1000 times at 1000 concerts its on par with pushing a play button.
