Gotoba: a Swordsmith Emperor in Medieval Japan (Part one) 後鳥羽上皇と隠岐の島とその御番鍛冶
The 82nd Emperor, Gotoba, was the first great connoisseur and patron of Japanese swords and even took part in sword making, surrounding himself with the best smiths of the day (the Gobankaji) .
After an unsuccessful uprising against the Shogunate, he was exiled to Okinoshima (Shimane prefecture) where it is said that he continued to make swords. In this video, we trace his steps and make some surprising discoveries.

The sword in Japan is not merely a weapon, it is a sublime piece of functional art, with deep spiritual and historical significance to the Japanese people. Just like Mount Fuji and Cherry Blossoms, the Japanese sword is an enduring symbol of Japan. It is my hope to share my love and passion for Japanese swords with all of you here on KZbin and make the Japanese sword accessible to the world by introducing the Japanese sword to new audiences from a Japanese perspective. That is why I created this Channel for the promotion and preservation of Japanese swords and related craftsmen.
Please subscribe to The Japanese Sword KZbin channel to never miss a video!
