Well this was perfect timing I need to put a set of these on my 1994 Gibson Les Paul Standard I was looking at a set of Grover’s or some Sperzels but after seeing the fit and ease of installation I think the Gotoh tuner look right on that guitar. The buttons look like original Gibson tuners.

I put lightweight gotoh’s on my jazz bass because of the neck dive. Made a big difference

Hey Tony, if going out of tune sharp, something is catching, nut slot usually too narrow for string gauge (especially on a gibson where g and d catch due to angle so those two slots need a 15ish degree cut on the headstock side left for d; and right, g, to avoid the sticking). If going flat, strings are not stretched out enough. In my experience unless your tuners are totally crap and the LP studio kluson/gibbies on your Tokai are not, locking tuners add little to a hard tail guitar (if string travel is totally unimpeded). Lovely tuners though from Gotoh. Keep up the good work 😊

Great info. I had lubricaly on the nut, and the strings are 9/42 on that guitar. I'll certainly look further if it continues and thanks for all that info... god for many guys.

I stuck a set on my lp to replace the grover lockers, far better feeling tuners that can take a slightly thicker string :) Crackin vid sir :)

Ohh Mr Mckenzie what will i do, i need a new guitar so i had better go to Crewe. Crewe is just 30 miles from where i live in Chester. Tokai made some great guitars in Japan, my parents bought me one to learn on and i hated the natural finish, i wanted one in Fiesta Red! like a fool i part-ex it for an Ibanez that had a slim neck that suited me better. You can buy Kluson style locking tuners that don't leave unsightly holes. Locking tuners make string changes easier, but rarely cure tuning issues With a Les Paul style the angle of the strings in the nut doesn't help, a well cut self lubricating nut makes a bigger diffference. I hope they help Tony, but experience tells me they might not.

Ha good to hear you and I sincerely hope you were not the guy who put it down at Crewe as I grabbed it :) At one stage I lived in BrynY-Baal if you know where that it :) but I'm back this side of the border since 1977. My Ibanez RG550LTD is wonderful! But... it's not an LP is it, they are just different. It might have been my half soaked string fitting causing the issues (I'm bone idle with those :) and the nut has lube on it, but we'll see. And I'll report back at some stage. Thanks for the tips...

Eh up Tone. Nice banjo. I have a (Japanese) LS150F - a '59-a-like. Great guitar. Mine still has the original tuners - Gotohs. No tuning issues, here. My gut feeling is your's might need the nut looking at, unless the tuners you took off were moving in their holes. In my experience, locking tuners don't fix tuning issues, but they do save time when changing strings - especially useful if you break strings when 'in battle'. You might find the extra weight on the head changes the guitar's tone, slightly too - bit like the old 'putting Grovers on in place of Klusons' in the old days. Great vid., by the way. Cheers.

My parents and family are from near crewe Tony. My Dad is from Audlem, my Mum from Aston near Nantwich. Are you from around there? The gold tulip tuners look great on that guitar. I like the bean tuners on some of my guitars, tactile i think the word is😊

Hi Tony. It would seem logical to me that if you were going to replace tuners you would get a set which had the tuning peg holes at the same height from the base of the tuner. This would ensure that the break angle from the nut did not change. However manufacturers of replacement tuners do not seem to provide info about the height of the hole from the base of the tuner. This would seem to me to indicate that these manufacturers do not regard it as an issue. Also YT videos about swapping tuners don't seem to address this either, but to my thinking this would be critical. What are your thoughts?

I have tuners that are staggered on some guitars and tuners that are not on others. Logic suggests that the string being as straight as possible is what's needed, but I don't really have that much trouble with either. On this guitar it kept going out of tune (but I also had light strings and pressing too hard is sometimes my fault!). and since fitting these it certainly is better. Ha well it does yes. One of the problems was (believe it or not) was that I had 8's strings on and over press them sometimes - and of course it throws the guitar out of tune. But the tuners really did help. I used nut lube too. Thanks for watching.

I’ve found tuners make no difference in LP’s. The nut cut and nut lubricant matter a whole lot though. Always enjoy the content. Cheers.

mmmm...... lower post length - more friction at nut , no bending strings unless you slap some graphite oil on the nut.

locking tuners add nothing tuning wise over a properly wound similar quality conventional tuner, they just speed up string changes...and add more weight to the headstock.
