I’m late to the party but just got a LA Studio used and I love it. This is my first time using a product like this and it’s pretty cool to have both worlds. It only took me a day to learn the two notes side of it but I still like my LA212 cab with it. Very in depth, detailed video!

That Gotoh510 is the best trem I've ever played, and I've played most! It has all the abilities of a locking trem but with the feel and tone of a hard-tail. It can flutter, pull up, dive, vibrato and everything else and it stays in tune just as well as a locking trem! I've been playing Ibanez / Floyd Rose bridges for decades but this is way better. No need for extra tools and dealing with various parts. The design is simple and looks good, and it works. The arm tension is easily adjustable in the back so there's no "loose swing" or rattle or noise and it's always snug with no "play" or loose movement. It's perfect. Re-strings are painless and fast. I've got the chrome version but this gold version looks sweet. Great video BTW : )

Interesting review however the fact that you failed to get decent sounds out of the unit is not uncommon amongst people who are new to a particular modeler. I've owned quite a few modelers which I sold as I did not have the patience to get the best out of them. It took me a while before I realised that I and not the modeler was the problem. These things have a steep learning curve and I look forward to these things being more user friendly for those of us who want to spend hours playing and not tweaking.

As I said in the review, I EXPECT Fractal Audio to have presets that are good? A company operating since 2006 and they can't create decent presets? Something is clearly adrift. To be honest the Fender ones sound better. I have used simulators since January 2012 non stop, but I PURPOSELY used their presets to show what the unit is like by default. And I just want to point out that is what I do with ALL simulators. Inserting loads of stuff that I think most users have likely never heard of, or having controls concocted that don't even exist on the real gear seems folly, or just a way, as you say of attracting a very small minority of computer users. It's just my opinion, but so many people criticize the Fractal stuff for being too complex and generally hard work. Of course their 'fans' won't say that, but that point of view certainly is out there. I think I first commented about the complexity about 8 years ago. Nothing has changed except maybe its got worse. It could be SO EASY to have two modes on the device - easy and harder... but of course the inventor type can't see that because to those people it's all great. I agree that this device should have GREAT presets, a 'simple' mode and what else would you need - leave the nerds to play with themselves. Sadly neither currently exist in this unit - its all or none. Thanks for watching.

Hi Tony. I love that you take the amp apart and walk through things like lead dress, circuit boards and transformers, and build quality. I think you are the only one that does that - and its super cool. Being an amp nerd, I love to see those kinds of details and it makes a huge influence on me dropping real money on one of these expensive models. I agree with you about some of the boutique amps being lax on some of the things like putting power resistors snug to the board, instead of raised up for airflow, and provoking burnt circuit boards failures. There are a couple of things I would love to see in your reviews. 1. A side by side comparison between these MINI style heads and the original big heads - do they really sound the same or close enough? 2. An objective measure of relative volume - which is super important if you play live gigs with drummers versus at bedroom volume levels. My rational is that its super hard to gauge useable volume (especially in non-master vol amps) for things like clean, breakup, and heavy distortion based on videos. It would be cool is to measure things like what is the max volume level can you hit cleans tones with before the amp goes from clean to breakup (xxx dB, assuming no drive pedals). Anyway - thanks so much for your review - keep doing it, I really appreciate your work!

Great post and thanks for taking the time to do it. I have a Marshall 1959 Hand Wired head, but trying to compare that with the studio ST Vintage would be VERY hard to do. Sure I can use the loading on the 100 watt to bring down the volume, but that alone changes the tone and feel. All I can say is that the 1959HW through a 4x12 Marshall cab turned up really can't be compared in the way you mention (no matter what any of them out there tell you). Having said that, the ST does sound like the 1959 but unless you have the same volumes and drive (not really possible) it won't sound exactly the same or feel the same, but it IS inspirational and certainly gives the feel that can inspire of that there is no doubt. While I really like the JTM ST20 shown here, really I prefer other Studio models because of the style I actually play. I could use pedals etc. but I tend to only use a wah and rarely anything else. So the preamp drive is important to me... but that's just me. Other guys really love this amp more than I do, but I always try and offer a view that is genuine and my own shortcoming through style should not really affect the review. These amps although you might not think so, can be very loud... but in a different way than say that 1959 HW. The best answer as always is to try one if you can, and if you can't always buy from where you can return it!. Thanks for the post and for watching too.

Undoubtedly my fave amp for tones and the best build quality I have ever seen is Mezzabarba M Zero One I reviewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWW6fZtmq76Uf9U and that amp really is what all others should try and emulate... but unlikely. The Mezzabarba has escalated in price since then and is now (approx) : $4000 - see it here: www.mezzabarba.com/mzero-overdrive/ and when you look inside with my review watch and you will see some of the best work there is! @@wickedmetalhead I'm sorry that your DSL gave up on you. Did it atleast sound good while it worked? About the JVM, don't you feel a 100watt, arena ready amp is a bit overkill? I'm just assuming you play at home, based on the fact that the JVM410 is now replacing the DSL20, which is regarded as a "practice amp". Significantly quieter and lower in power.
@wickedmetalhead
@wickedmetalhead 4 күн бұрын
@@rollingstart_90s Yes. The DSL sounded good when it worked. Also, you are right about the 100W amp being overkill for home playing.. but I have tried that JVM in a store and its master volumes are very useful in achieving lower volumes at home. Also, if it is still very loud for the home, I plan to get an attenuator somewhere down the line.

@@wickedmetalhead Oh! It is great to know that Marshall has managed to build a big 100W head, that can be adjusted for home use. Yes, at some point Marshal, Messa, ENGL, etc etc are going to either go to software or they will go away as a company. Think of them much like Kodak. The owned the world of photography at some point and well, look at them now. As for what are you going to model in teh future? Pretty easy, you model and create in software. Bias was already tinkering with that nearly a decade ago with their pedal builder software. Industry got kind of away from that but that is the future just like digital photography and video was the future no matter how much kodak tried to cling to the past. Add AI into the mix and the future of amp and pedal sims and modeling, whatever term you want to call it is going to be huge. AND ITS A GREAT THING! In 5 years the tones artists are going to come up with are going to be spectacular and it will only be possible with moving this industry to software.

I have kpp. Two things really bothers me: lack of SPDIF/ADAT output ( it is crime to have digital device without proper digital out) . With SPDIF out I could connect kpp with audio interface which has SPDIF input . Other thing , with USB audio, sample rate is only 44.1 kHz - this is shame. Lack of screan is not deal breaker, but there are many other problems with rig manager : it is not written anywhere which cab is selected. On drop-down list it is not marked, when I open the list , it starts from the beggining ( it should start with selected cab). These are rookie mistakes….
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 8 күн бұрын
Well I agree with lots of that. SPDIF personally I don't use, but its right there on the FM3 (but that's twice the price) and its omitted also off much of Roland/Boss gear too. They could update the 44.1 (maybe or not). And on the cabs thing it seems to me that the software is reminiscent of older Kemper gear where cabs were really not there as such. Good points. But overall for the money (and the 23,000 captures online) I think it is reasonable. Good post and thanks for watching.

Tony; thank you for another thorough, informative and honest review. Regarding tap dancing with just the three foot switches, you mentioned also getting the FC6 controller. Adding the prices of those two together would get close to the FM9 with all those extra foot switches. Had you considered that ? Either way, I appreciate the in-depth look at the interface and you've confirmed what many others have said - namely that it's far too complicated. Looking forward to your review of the Fender TMP. Keep up the great work !
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 9 күн бұрын
Indeed I DID consider the FM9. But I thought really that the combination of the FM3 and FC6 allowed for a smaller footprint when 3 buttons would suffice. It IS an interesting aspect and the FM9 includes another processor and a few other things so is probably better value overall. I will look at the FC6 internally and as a short review but I don't really expect to see much in there - but I could be wrong, we shall see. As always some people shoot the messenger and that is frustrating really, but thanks for your great post. I have always found the FA gear more complex than is really necessary, and I am surprised that they simply don't have a 'simple' mode and an advanced mode for the people that really do want to spend the time with all of that, I can't see why. The Fender I failed to remove the cooling off the processor and as yet I have NEVER actually seen what the processor is. I always like to confirm what they are. But thanks for watching - appreciated.

The wood combo should give it a hollowish sound from the roasted SA, and maybe a rounder upper midrange from the Walnut. I'd go with a lacquered FB on whatever neck you choose for better high-end sparkle the body woods might otherwise absorb. Roasted Maple should look nice, and not damp too much midrange. Something denser would work too if you want more oomph at the risk neck dive. EVO frets would look nice and may last longer than the Stainless Steel offerings, according to master luthier Ken Parker.
