How is it wise to fear God? What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge in the Bible? Does "fear" men "respect," or does the Bible actually want us to be afraid of God? In this video, Pastor Nelson answers your question: How is the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom?

Recently, I had a dream where our Lord Jesus showed me to read the New Testament. I believe that He was showing me to tell everyone that it is time for us to learn what the New Testament is really about and that it is time for all of us to get right, especially considering how many Biblical prophecies are coming true as we speak.

I believe the correct interpretation of the Biblical fear of God is summed up in Matthew 10:28: "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Decades ago, upon hearing a sermon of Elisha asking God for twice the spirit of Elijah, I naively but sincerely asked God for twice the Wisdom of Solomon. It was naive because I was clueless as to how much the Lord would allow me to suffer in the ensuing years, in part to instill in me the correct application of the fear of God--in part to also remove from my heart its remaining evils, chiefly the Christian arrogance most of us have covering our countenances (Prov.6:16-17a). The God-friendly, hyper-faith, watered-down Gospel today seeks to turn God into a refrigerator magnet of a Santa Claus Jesus, but so many will one day be standing in front of Him with their hat in their hand, without any defense whatsoever.

Thank u for the explaination. I was thinking of "fear" in those verses exclusively in the "cringing fear" interpretation. Thinking in terms of "respect" and acknowledgment of His awesome power makes more sense. But, another interpretation popped up while thinking about it: think of "fear God, and only God". I could list a lot of things I fear, but they are mostly foolish concerns. The wise man fears only God.

It is the fear of the Lord that causes us to say no to sin. No awe inspiring fear can ever do that, it means exactly what it says we fear him because of his holy nature his love toward us but his hatred against sin as well holding these up together we have the right perspective and we don't sin against him. It is true fear of god not awe fear whatever that is which causes us to turn from our sin knowing that god shows no partiality and just because we are born again and justified in his sight does not give us the ability to take grace for granted. On the contrary, it's even more serious for us because we have no excuse because we know how good he is, and if we choose to let our sin grow anyway, he will judge us.

It is also actual fear, knowing he is the CREATOR and at his word reality jumps into existence should remind us we are finte but he isn’t so he is the JUDGE over all his creation. Let us rejoice, the root of his power is his love and that he is HOLY and GOOD towards us.

God has not given us the spirit of Fear but instead the Spirit of Love, Power and a sound Mind. Godly Fear is Fearing the Consequences of not being in God's Presence continually because the Spirit of the Lord Is Wisdom and Understanding, Counsel and Power, Knowledge and Fear and bringing in His Presence Continually is the only Way a person can be transformed into God's Image and Likeness. King David in Psalms chapter 51 is the perfect example about Godly Fear and fearing the Presence of God's Spirit of Holiness departing from His presence. Do you Fear Facing Life without the only way to deal with things you can not over come by your self? Psalms 91:1 Those who dwell in the Secret Place Abide under the shadow of the Most High.

@@mattr.1887, to atone for our sin. Imagine someone broke into your house and stole all your property, you would want that person to be punished to the full extent of law, wouldn't you? I know I would if that were to happen to me. Well guess what? God does too, he wants justice for all the wrong that all of humanity has committed, including you and I. The bible says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). We are owed death for the sins we have committed. But, God knew that we couldn't make things right. He knew we couldn't atone for our sins... we are weak and pathetic. So what does he do? He puts on human flesh and bore the punishment of our sin onto himself so that those who believe and acknowledge what he did for us will be forgiven, because once someone truly believes, they are reborn of sprint. A new creation, the bible says, and will begin to be conformed into the image of Christ. Starting at John 3:16 (very famous verse, but few read beyond verse 16): “For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” Hope that helps! God bless.

When Jesus died he paid the cost for the sins we committed so we could avoid the punishment if we repent and trust in his atoning sacrifice. Belief is faith in what Jesus accomplished by His death, not a replacement for it. If Jesus hadn’t died we would have nothing to believe.

HOW? well usually, we pay close attention to what we fear, in order for possible impending danger/distaster to b avoided, thats how. and considering our food source depends generally on enough sun/rain/proper temperatures etc to GROW the grains/vegetables/fruit etc,, all of which comes from GOD HIMSELF and His gracious provision to humans, its best that we PAY ATTENTION and obey HIM, seeing as how we are living on HIS earth and HE controls the weather, hence our food supply.

Being severely chastised by God will teach you fear of the Lord. Hebrews 12:6-11 KJVS For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. [7] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? [8] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. [9] Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? [10] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. [11] Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Fear of the Lord is not the same fear as fear of death. If it is this type of fear, then nobody will dare to even go near God because there is a high chance of dying. Nobody will want to know God, drawing near him to gain wisdom. The correct meaning for Fear of the Lord = Worship the Lord Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

@@mattr.1887 One can humble himself, go before the Lord and ask for understanding, insight, and discernment. But know the Lord is not obligated to answer in the way or time requested. Answer he will but not exactly as we would choose. This is one reason many lose their faith and hope in God. He does do what they want when they want. Remember when Job was suffering one horrific loss after another in a rapid and strategic fashion signally some kind of supernatural intervention in his life. He had no idea that God was proving something awesome about Job to Satan because hates humans ever so much yet God loves them. Job was a poster child to the Lord of awesomeness yet everyone around Job assumed he was cursed by God but this wasn't the case. Job knew he was innocent and finally approached the Lord. He asked God for answers. God answered Job but not how God expected. God never told Job why he was made to suffer more than other men. As readers we know why but Job, his friends, and wife did not. In answering Job, God kind of fluffed his feathers a bit and simply but sternly reminds Job who God is and what He has done. Job gets his answer but it wasn't what he was looking for. He gets a renewed self of humility before God and regains his peace despite the tremendous back-to-back losses. And God sweetly repays Job after proving to Satan Job would not respond the way Satan assumed he would. Go Job for Team human and Team God! May we all weather the storms like Job without cursing God despite lack of insight. Again, first ask for insight but trust whatever reply one is given. None us us is omnipotent, omnipresent or omniscient like the Father but it is his good pleasure to reveal some things in some seasons to some folks. It usually seems to be on a need-to-know basis though. Also, just studying the Lord's character, His emotions, and His interactions with people in the Bible and around us gives all sorts of insight.

It does not seem hard to me to love a God who could snuff out my life in a moment but chose a different solution for dealing with my sin. You yourself do not live by what you are saying, there are things you did not do because of how your dad would have reacted, and that was a good thing, and it is part of why you love him now (Hebrews 12:4-13). There is a fear that leads to peace and a fear that leads to rebellion The point of fearing God is you would disappoint your best friend long before you would even think of disappointing God. Very few people show God that much whole-hearted love consistently.

@@mattr.1887 There are those who believe that people will be tortured for eternity, but there is also an alternate view. I am a conditionalist, also known as an annihilationist. I don't think scripture says hell is eternal for humans. Jesus said that he built the Lake of Fire for the Devil and his demons (Matthew 25:41). It is they who will be tortured day and night forever and ever. Jesus said that those who are unsaved will suffer the second death (Revelation 21:8). He didn't say that they would have eternal life of suffering, but rather a second death. Also, Jesus warns to fear the one who can destroy BOTH body and soul in Gehenna (Matthew 10:28)... again, giving credence to the theory of annihilationism, imo. At the end of the day, the bible says that God is a just God. Everything that will take place will be justified before Him and His laws. Those who are going to hell will have full knowledge as to why they are going there. The bible says that EVERY secret will be revealed. Everything that you have ever done will be revealed and your sentence carried out. Unless of course you can soften your heart by humbling yourself and coming before the Creator and asking sincerely for forgiveness... which he will freely and willing give you as his wish is that all would come to repentance and be saved (2 Peter 3:9).
@deanfry879

@Matt R. Indeed. Yet it is the fear of death, or some other real or perceived loss, that will cause most people to do a wrong. The young will see someone else's death. What will you tell them happens to them after death, for having nothing to tell them is also very disturbing. If there is nothing after death, why obey any rule, since it makes no difference in the end. I will not argue there are many Christians acting less than Christian. But I do not live in fear of eternal torture because Jesus Christ suffered that torture in my place and yet came back to life. That may not be very fair to Him, but He made that choice without consulting me or you or anyone else.

What a load of rubbish. The fear of God is a step backwards, not the beginning of wisdom. God does not want fear from us, he wants love. God is love. He created a universe built with love. In this universe there is no place for fear. So a fear of God does not help us anymore than it helps God. Man has always feared the unknown, therefore if we fear God we will never know God. If we fear God, we are no better than terrified cavemen throwing rocks at the moon as it rises in the night sky. So if we fear God, what have we learned? Nothing.
