I know this song isn’t about Franz Josef I but hearing this song and seeing the picture of him on his knees praying for the expedient victory and safe return of his troops in World War One is really tear jerking. Especially when you hear the stories of how he broke down into tears when his troops were slaughtered in Galicia. He truly was the people’s emperor, he woke up at 4 am nearly everyday believing god had put him on earth to serve the empire. Even during the war he delegated his time to helping widows and families of fallen soldiers.

The first version of the text was composed by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749-1827) in 1791, and began with a greeting to the newly enthroned Emperor Franz the Great, then known as Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser. Actually Franz's eldest son was named Ferdinand, not Franz, so when he inherited the crown in 1835 the lyrics were changed. The opening lines were "Segen Öst'reichs hohem Sohne / Unserm Kaiser Ferdinand!" The original lyrics were briefly restored when Ferdinand abdicated in 1848 and was succeeded by his nephew Franz Josef, but a third set of lyrics ("Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze / Unsern Kaiser, unser Land!") was adopted in 1854.

[REPOST] The last Kaiser of Austria-Hungary was an absolutely BLESSED individual. First of all, he was against the war and wanted to take Austria-Hungary out in order to focus on internal matters, he didn't see how fighting the most devastating war since would avenge Franz Ferdinand. He truly cared about the many ethnicities in the empire and had big plans to create a federal government where all the ethnicities have their own state and had equal rights (governed similarly to the US). And to top it all off, his last words were to his wife and they were: "I love you".

Blame his ancestors, Germany was weak under Habsburg leadership from the early 1600s to the early 1800s and numerous defections and foreign invasions happened. Remember the Habsburgs were given Germany again in 1815, and they still lost it all to Prussia (a former German imperial tail, now grown into an independent dog) besides their crown lands in 1867/71

@TheLocalLt4 жыл бұрын
@@rathinmajumder441 I’m not sure whether the Habsburg emperors were too heavy handed or too light handed towards their fiefs (the granting of which you could argue had been in itself too light handed, though standard at the time), because in one sense the reformation wars and thirty years war were caused by imperial heavy handedness, however being more light handed after these wars caused each duchy and Kingdom of the empire to act near-independent and eventually allowed for them to join Prussia in a new empire. So really once the reformation started the Habsburgs were at first too heavy handed, causing the wars, but then later being forced by the Treaty of Westphalia and the Congress of Vienna to be too light handed (these treaties granted religious freedom and limited sovereignty to all German Imperial duchies and kingdoms, limiting the Habsburgs power in their own realm). Youre right though, had the Empire won these wars, and the Habsburgs successfully reinstated Catholicism throughout Germany, history could have turned out completely different.
@rathinmajumder4413 жыл бұрын
@@TheLocalLt well yes at the beginning they were ironhanded but soon they recognised they can rely upon other German States for help during war and started to rule with a light touch within the Austrian Empire.. although to be exact in Austria-Hungary when Franz Josef opened his arms to the people of his empire to gain the support of the elite in their multi ethnic Empire..those defeats did bring end to the holy Roman Empire and WW1 brought the end of the Habsburg Empire but I still believe hadn't Franz Josef died.. although if the outcome of the war wouldn't change drastically the Habsburg Empire would have still existed as the people in his Empire owed their rights to him and many saw loyalty to the Empire with Loyalty to Franz Josef

The fact how uniting such a song can be is fascinating. I really like classic music but also other titles and yet these types just give me goosebumps. You can think of monarchy and royalty what you want but one of the best anthems - even if not used anymore - were created out of dynesties from most countries from nobles, royalties under monarchist systems. Everytime when I think of a Pan-German Empire of the size of the German Confederation just incoorperating Prussia fully and Luxembourg (idc if with or without Alsace), united under the habsburgs, EXACTLY this song plays in my head.

This melody is from the Second Movement of String Quartet no. 62 (The Emperor Quartet)in C major by Franz Joseph Haydn. It has such a delicate softness and nobility performed instrumentally. Unfortunately, the melody got usurped and used by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in “Deutschland, Deutschland Über Alles,“ and became the national anthem of those German states which are now in Germany. I always however associate it with Austria and the Habsburg Emperors. It really belongs to Austria. At the same time, I also appreciate Austria’s National Anthem, “Land der Berge, Land am Strome.” It’s really beautiful, but in my heart I feel a longing for that original Kaiserhymne by Haydn.

I think it's so wonderful when a "Salvatore de Valeriani" calls himself "a Austrian". All attempts at re-education by the nationalists in the countries of the former Habsburg monarchy have not quite achieved the success desired by the nationalists. "Viribus Unitis" still seems to be alive in the countries of the Habsburgs. Even if only sporadically.
