YES. You're both right. He's painfully underrated, and I get why: his big hit is instantly accessible in sound and theme, and the rest are just more subtle. But they grow on you and once they have you they never let you go. That "vast soundscape" is a perfect way to put it--he has INCREDIBLE musical range... the nuances are just incredible. I wish more people would give this genius a deeper look. He's more than worthy of it.

I was re-listening to this album a few weeks ago and this song came on and I was like, "Ah, yes. This was in Suits when Mike is walking down the sidewalk." And my mom was immediately like, "We have to rewatch that." My parents and I just got to season 2 and it was exactly as I remembered it. Also this album is money. Somebody That I Used to Know is, like, the least impressive song on the album. Gotye has such a unique sound.
@Zansekai2 жыл бұрын
Stop trying to downplay Somebody That I Used To Know just because it got popular. It's definitely not the least impressive song on the album
@LeahDino322 жыл бұрын
@@Zansekai sorry, what I mean was, I personally find it to be the least impressive song on the album, which doesn't adequately reflect the strangeness and nuance of which Gotye is capable, in both his musicality and his lyrics. There's nothing wrong with popular 'radio' music, or artists who primarily make radio music. But I think it's a shame when some with that much talent and that unique of a sound is reduced to a single radio hit. 🤷

It's not offensive, but it's wrong to just say it doesn't sound like that. I had someone referencing the song in a joke and they said soul. I caught it because that's what I heard. Otherwise I wouldn't have even wrote the comment. This isn't objective, sound is a subjective experience.

(Is that too easy?) Are you only trying to please them (Will they see then?) You're desperate to deliver Anything that could give you A sense of reassurance When you look in the mirror Such highs and lows You put on quite a show All these highs and lows And you're never really sure What you do it for Well do you even want to know? You put on quite a show Are you watching? Are you watching? (Mother) Are you watching? (Mother) You're a fraud and you know it And every night and day you take the stage And it always entertains You're giving pleasure And that's admirable, you tell yourself And so you'd gladly sell yourself To others Are you watching? I love Suits and the beginning of a song fits to Mike perfectly, despite that a song isn't about frauds and fraudmen. It is about the artist's life : doesn't matter what kind artist you are, you still pretend to be a different person than you really are, yet you continue to be that person, because he/she is lovable and you need that love to not feel miserable. Eventhough you feel empty inside, you can't end that. You are the fraud for others happiness.
