One sneaky thing in the music - the xylophone is pretty much playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". It's a song we don't think about much once we are grown, so it becomes a song we used to know - helps give it that familiar and yet unfamiliar feeling you get when you talk to somebody you used to know :)
@burningstar17935 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about this song is the second chorus. The girl sings loud in the background, he says something (all the lines he sings sound like they can be words of sadness or words of scolding depending on perspective), then she sings reserved like its under her breath for the rest of the line......they're low-key having an argument in the second verse
@I.Toverheks7 ай бұрын
I always felt it was about a narcissistic relationship. He paints a beautiful picture of their relation, blaming her actions all on her, still trying to get some reaction or relation or control with her. she paints herself out of the picture when she says how controlling she experienced his actions and how she could only stop it by going contact. This is also exactly what happens in the original video. His painting of that picture, her stepping out of it. But that's the beauty of this song. Everyone can hear in it what they can relate to. This was definitely an ex of me... And me. To me at last😊

'Cause that's the something sneaky that's going on. The guy character in the song's the kind of garbage that sneaks around with exes and when the GF catches wind and dumps him, plays victim and tries to convince everyone she's being cruel for reacting exactly the way she should have.

There's a possible double (triple?) with the 'sneaky' xylophone melody--it's a play off Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which in a 'sneaky' way also makes it feel familiar and nostalgic (like the mood of the primary vocals).

No, no, no. Y'all got the story in this song wrong. He sings about breaking up with a woman, he thought he didn't love. Found another love, and as she describes, she broke up with him, because he promised he was over his first love who left him, but he wasn't. He was still "hung up" on her. I can related to this experience. The guy is sneaky, as you suspected..sneaky about his confused emotions. The guy does play the victim, but losing both of his loves is his own fault for pretending he didn't need the love of his first lady, and using the second lady as a rebound. Oh, and I always liked this song, and its "odd" music. I think it's kind of.."haunting" and sad

Ok. The first time I heard this song was a you tube video that was mind boggling to me. This song was covered by a group of about 5 people. All young men and one young lady. They were all dressed in black, sitting in a living room with soft lighting. They did the instrumental part on a guitar. One guitar, being played by all 5 of them at the same time. I have watched that video so many times trying to figure out how they did that. They also sung this song very well too. I don't know the name of the group, but their video drew enough attention that Ellen ask them to be a guest on her show. But the stage performance of it does not do it justice. Their video that they made themselves, is what takes it over the top. I don't know how to post a link to their video, but I am sure someone here can. And I bet some of you remember it. Ty, you really need to check it out. How can 5 people play one guitar and the same time. They were able to cover all the instruments on that one guitar that the orginal song did with several. (unless the orginal was using some kind of high tech keyboard.

I agree that a lot of times the music in a song can paint an entirely different picture than what the lyrics are singing about. And no one has the right to tell you that the pictures or images or feelings that a song invokes in YOU is wrong. They can debate all they want about what the song is intended to be about, and providing that info as an aside, especially if it's actually been explained by the artist, is fine. But yeah, no gets to tell you what a song means to you except you. And, on a side note, I now desperately want to see a movie where a heist scene is done to this song instead of the usual "heist music". *LOL* Because yeah, the syncopated rhythm of it really would work well for that kind of thing. Especially if it's being played-off as funny. Also, to me anyway, this guy's voice made me think of a bit of Sting, who sang solo and with a group in the 80's called The Police. And since I don't know any other songs by Gotye, I'll recommend "Desert Rose" by Sting instead.

He reminds me a bit of Peter Gabriel in the 80s, when he belts it out. I think that the sneaky feel you got goes well with the lyrics. We hear his side and feel that she hasn't been fair to him. But, then, we hear her side, about how he would put her down and make her feel less than she is, plus that it's her fault too! It's a bit like we've been deceived. Then, if we think about what he said, about how he didn't want to be with her anyway, it's clear that we were being duped from the start. Sneaky.
