+Katana Cat-chan Mow I switched from flute to bassoon. I'm a junior in high school. It's easy to produce a sound because the way you blow into a flute is pretty similar to the way you blow into a bassoon. The hard part is getting those notes, being able to open the back of your throat to produce solid low notes and to keep a steady air flow and there's a ton of thumb keys so it's definitely a transition but it's fun!

You need to really love the instrument. Unless you are extremely fortunate the initial instrument you work with will be garbage better suited to firewood, such were the school bassoons I first played. Finding a teacher who actually specializes in the instrument will be tough. At times I have had to drive 2+ hours to find an oboe or bassoon teacher. I was extremely fortunate in having played oboe for two years before taking up bassoon, thus I knew where to get reeds from. Unless you live in a community with a store like RDG Woodwinds or Forrest's Music the reeds that you buy from local music stores will be garbage, hopefully you can find somebody locally that makes them. That's the bad news, the good new is the wealth of solo and orchestral literature for the instrument. Once you get good with it is a ton of fun to play. Once you learn to make your own reeds that are suited to your style the enjoyment will be even greater. I even go so far as to gouge my own cane which is not as common amongst bassoonists as it is among oboists. I see a lot of people asking "should I switch" or "just switched". If any of you guys have bassoon specific questions you can PM me and I'll try to provide answers.

i played flute for 2 years and i switched to bassoon about 6 months ago and i ABSOLUTELY love it. im so glad i switched. yes bassoon is a little hard because double reed and you would have to learn a whole new clef but i love bassoon way more than flute. (whoops?) so i would def switch :)

I feel bad for you guys at my school I got a brand new bassoon that had never been played, my band director LOVES double reeds and my lesson teacher lives 5 mins away who is a retired collage bassoon teacher and has played since 6th grade

I switched from flute with only tax and grease to a 50,000 dollar basson, plus tax, plus the 20 dollar reeds you need to buy every month after one chips, and tax, and grease, plus tax, and neck or seat strap, plus tax, and 1,000 more dollars for the therapist you need to see for carrying that 100 pound thing. Overall, you won't die and become broke :) Jk I became broke and I needed to seek a therapist for medicalmattention. RIP me even though I still play it
