This is a rare treat! I remember when I first learned about Gould’s dislike of live performing fifty years ago, I somehow felt vindicated. He would often record late at night and was among the first to openly edit and splice. Years later with recording equipment in my home, I’ve often felt the sheer joy I see here in Gould’s face. And am touched to the heart. And his beautiful manners match his playing. Still my hero after half a century!

@blankname47164 жыл бұрын
@@Carvin0 it does. I know Gould was close to Lauren (other guy) and even once asked if he could legally be his brother. But how did he run into Mr. Yes?
@aa-qx1cg3 жыл бұрын
what's he supposed to do? critique the performances? how many people are qualified to offer useful critiques of Gould's Bach? Gould knows what he wants to do, the guy is just there to give him someone to talk to. Call him psychological support if anything.
@pablov19733 жыл бұрын
How many people do you think that can be able to tell an artist "what the heck are you doing?, did you study the score before you came to the studio?" It doesn´t working like that.

Fascinating video. Thanks for posting. Shows why Gould's performances seem so "mechanical". Cut splice cut splice..like Frankenstein. This is not artistry at level of Perahia, Schiff, or S. Richter. Those guys have a vision for the whole piece and can play the whole piece live and really connect with the listener. I don't understand the Gould cult.
@blankname47164 жыл бұрын
Suppose it's the difference between live play acting vs film making. One leads to more possibilities to the final product than the other.
@JL-fh4qw4 жыл бұрын
Go compare the B major sinfonia between Schiff and Gould. You like the more romantic performers, if Gould wanted he could have played like them he certainly had the technique and vision to do so. This has nothing to do with splicing.
@davidmdyer8383 жыл бұрын
Refreshing comment. Amazing that he could come into a recording studio with no clue of how the piece should go, no forethought, no insight, just trying out stuff. All this "genius" talk is so ridiculous, this is not how to make music, and he didn't. Even film makers have an idea of what they want to accomplish ahead of time. This is just cluelessness. His early recordings were great, this is just nuts.
@aa-qx1cg3 жыл бұрын
Gould was perfectly capable of performing live, and did so many times, he just didn't enjoy it. To suggest that Gould wasn't technically competent is laughable.
@pablov19733 жыл бұрын
Do you now how many splices have a modern recording? The correct ever single f*cking note if is necessary. From 400 to 4000 interpolations are common on a modern recording since the dawn of the digital recording technology.
