Gould JO5 Water Pump Rebuild

This 1985 Gould’s JO5 shallow well water pump was moving water but never reaching pressure enough for the pressure switch to turn the pump off automatically. The motor was not making noises or ceased so the well pump needed to rebuilt. This video shows disassembling the JO5 Jet Pump, cleaning the housing, and rebuilding the pump with new wear parts- impeller, guidevane, guidevane seal, diaphram, mechanical seal. I had a similar problem. Replaced the pressure switch and tube to no avail. I took the easy way out and replaced the pump entirely. Cost for me was not quite $500CDN for a 3/4 hp Red Lion pump. I then did a destructive autopsy on the pump. Chock-a-block FULL of corrosion! Miracle I had any water at all! It begs the question. Why do they make these things out of cast iron in the first place? My pump went 19 years 8 months before I replaced it but I'd been having problems with it for about the last 18 months. So I'd say anytime after about 15-18 years one can expect either a new pump or a major overhaul. I looked at a stainless steel pump but the geometry just wasn't right for my situation and I didn't want to have to relocate the pump and pressure tank. But for that, I think a S/S pump is surely a better choice? Cost difference it not great.

Nice video! That pump was corroded!!! I have one which has an impeller that I haven't yet been able to remove🤐 I don't seem to be able to take the motor completely off of the pump. If I could, I could power it with any motor, via a pulley

Please help!! I’m helping my father out with his pump. He’s got no water at the moment. Is the strainer necessary or can you just place the foot valve on directly??

ty for the vid. What kind of paint is safe to paint the inside to keep it from rusting out. this pump supplies the water to my house.

I don’t know that I would paint the inside. The water to this pump has a lot of iron in it so maybe that’s why it was so bad. a pre filtration system before the pump might help.
