Very informative video, thank you Clyde. As an addition to feeding fresh grass seed, I make sure not to gather any fresh grass seeds next to a road (afraid of noctious gasses from vehicles taken up by the grass) or farm fields (possibly pesticides and fertilizers), I rinse the grass thoroughly under running tap water, I inspect the grass for pests and parasites (like ticks), and I rather pull each grass stem upwards instead of cutting the grass stem. The gouldians love to eat on the succulant part of the grass stem too. (Actually I also wash and dry the dried seeds I feed) Usually I look out for weaver birds and wild canaries feeding on wild grass seed, and then I will collect some grass from those patches of grass. Doing this also introduce you to a variety of grasses.

Thank you Leon for this. I know a couple of guys that collect the wild grasses as well and your point are very good and important. I grow my own for my birds so I don't for that reason collect wild grasses. But I will mention your points in the next episode as they are important.

@@ohhansolo you would usually split pairs after breeding, for the rest period and molt. I split mine into flights with only birds of the same gender.

Hi. If the hen lays too many eggs in a season they loose too.much calcium and often do not make it through the moult.

Awesome show, i do tend to tjek my boxes too much under incubation, thx for the advice:) After hatching, getting the possible, dead in nest chick out seems urgent. How often do you tjek on chicks in nest? Best regards from Denmark =)

Nick I found that in the first few days if a chick dies the parents will chuck it out the box. Once the chicks are bigger you can check a bit more often as the parent are less likely to abandon them as they scream for food.

I am so sad and distressed. I bought a beautiful pair on this Friday and today the male died. I have absolutely no clue why. I got to have him for two days. I placed them in an indoor small aviary with other finches and a few canaries. Can his death have been due to stress? I am genuinely trying to find an answer, as I am heartbroken. He was a young bird.😭. If I ever get to have another gouldian finch male, I need to avoid this happening again. I would be ever so grateful for your advice.

I'm sorry you lost your male gouldian. They are quiet susceptible to stress until they have settled in your environment. The next time you get a gouldian I would not put it straight into you aviary but rather quarantine it first and make sure is adjusts to your environment, seed and locates where to find water etc. When you move it use the same food and water dishes so that it can locate them in the bigger environment easily. Also make sure they do not get exposed to a draft. I hope the next time is more successful as they are a magnificent little bird.

Can you say something about how frequently and how long they will stay in breeding condition? I have heard that it is correlation to when they were hatched, by that I mean a bird hatched in January will be in condition at a different time of year than a bird hatched in June.

Dont your pairs sometimes mate before you add the Egg box? i have had a few eggs on the floor like that. So i usually put the pairs together with an box from the start , when the females are in condition. I have the conditioning period with separated genders.

I know a breeder that keeps his birds together all year round and others like yourself pair only once in condition. Generally I pair previous years pairs that I'm repeat breeding early but only add a box when they coming into condition. I guess it is what works for you. As an idea for next season I will do an experiment. One conditioning separately and one group paired up. We can then see together which seems to work better. Will be a nice project for the show.

Trust me brother if u can put a nice book together about how u set up a breeding cage and pick ur pure breed birds and what u feed and don't feed and how to treat when sick most people don't have smart phone's or WiFi so a nice book will help educate new bird lovers out there same as ur video's help alot keep up with the good work u doing don't ever stop doin what u do best

Hello, I have a hen who is curious about the nest but never actually commit to go in, and she seems to doesn’t like the cock. I already saw him multiple time dancing and bouncing his head for her but she move away she’s not interest … I saw poop in the nest so I guess the cock tries to get in and call her but she still don’t care. ~6weeks they are together. Do you think I should wait more time ? (PS : sorry for the long question and as always great content thanks a lot 🙏🏻)

It just ve that the hen has not come into breeding condition as yet. However if she is in condition then it might be that they incompatible as you suggesting in which case swop them to different partners.
