But: When Brian described his preferred pizza topping, I started to feel a bit sickly (my pizza choice: pineapple? nonono! anchovies? jajaja!). Then Brian came up with the fun fact - even though I already knew the fact - and I was suddenly happy to have access to 18,000 packs of medicine, some of them anti-nausea.... Hooded nib is still quite a romanticized thing in the Chinese fountain pen culture, just because brands like Hero were so dominant at one point. Even though Hero has fallen behind in the industry (I would say), it still holds an important space in the culture, and many people still buy pens like the Hero 100. In that sense there is really no "good reason" for hooded nibs to still hold such a place in China. But because they were a sign of a Chinese company being able to make a pen as well as the Americans, they are still held up as this cultural symbol.
@S.L._2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for prerecording these so there is a Pencast on your weeks off! I love the diversity of humanity -- watching Brian's sheer excitement and enthusiasm talking about the cubes, coupled with simultaneously watching Drew's brain melt, then reconsititute in appeciation of Brian's happiness, and then explode when another complicated cube came up, made my day. I've lived in humid, and mostly temperate places throughout my life, but yes, TWSBI and Platinum have great seals. I'd add that Opus 88 does, too. I've had bad luck personally with the seals on snap cap Pilot models, but that may just be me. And yeah, Private Reserve Infinity ink is amazing. I don't know about hot, dry environments, but in hot, humid environments, it does what it claims. Is bathtub saliva the new turkey hammock? Because it was hilarious, but I don't think it would make a great sticker.

Nah. I like hooded nibs a lot. To me it's the feel on paper and in the hand that counts, and nothing beats a juicy fine nib and lack of a step on the grip. Companies should really make more of them, the simplicity of the nib/grip design opens up opportunities to be creative with the rest of the pen body. I have 2 51As and that .38 nib is among my favorites, easily comparable to my VP in F.

Pineapple on pizza: I've always been ambivalent on this; Hawaiian pizza is OK but not great. But this summer while I was doing a cross country motorcycle road trip, we stopped in at Powder River Pizza in Sheridan WY. I had the Main Street, which has pepperoni, sausage, jalapenos and pineapple. It. Was. Amazing! The spiciness from the jalapenos, the smokiness of the sausage, contrasted with the sweet tang of the pineapple, it all just worked SO WELL together. It's genuinely in the running for the best pizza I've EVER had.

Regarding your questions about ink in arid environments, I also recommend storing your inked pens in a horizontal position, preferably in a pen box or case, particularly if you ink up more than three (Drew!). Putting them in some kind of case helps slow the evaporative process. Also, consider choosing more lubricated inks (i.e. Sailor). The surfactant or lubricant used seems to also slow the evaporative process. One last suggestion - during times of heat and low humidity, consider using a wider nib.

I have a question for y’all! I’m not new to the fountain pen community, but I’m still not sure what the purpose of getting your nib ground is. Is it only to make it flow more smooth? I have been wanting a hooded nib because I think that it looks more subtle when I am writing in a place where I don’t want to draw attention to the fact that I’m using a fountain pen. I have not taken the plunge yet, though, because I am fairly new to fountain pens and am intimidated by the fact that it looks more complicated to clean and I don’t have any experience with vintage pens.
@BanzanShakuhachi2 жыл бұрын
Exactly my thought! I agree that not drawing attention is perhaps the best reason for using a hooded nib these days. I don't have a fully-hooded nib such as that in Parker 51 pens, but I feel that the semi-hooded nib in the Lamy 2000 (and its general design) work well in this sense, so this is what I'm using when I don't want to draw attention. And the Lamy 2000 is definitely not a hard pen to clean, you may want to give it a try.

At first, I didn't care for hooded nibs because I like the look and shape of "normal" fountain pen nibs, but I am a Parker fangirl (for rather silly and sentimental reasons), and you can't say you like Parker pens and NOT own at least one Parker 51! I picked up several on ebay for under $50 with gold nibs, and they write beautifully! I also really like Aurora pens and picked up a DuoCart from your bottom shelf, and I love that modern hooded nib, too! I am easy to please, though, because my pen collection has a little of everything because I just have to try everything and every brand!

On a more serious note, one thing that always concerns us fountain pen folks is the possibility of an uncapped pen falling onto a floor and damaging the nib. One time (this was when I was living alone in my first apartment), I had started putting away some groceries that I had just brought home and I turned around after smelling a weird smell - only to find that the egg carton I had on my counter had leaked or burst open...but the super freaky thing was that the eggs that had burst onto the countertop had legit begun to COOK THEMSELVES. Like they were on the griddle. I never touched the counter to see if the surface was hot - because right after I noticed the eggs, I heard a noise that sounded like it was coming from my refrigerator. I slowly walked over to it (despite my better judgment) and cracked it open. The light seemed WAAAY brighter than normal, and the air coming out wasn't cold. Just when I though I saw an image of some sort of temple or gate or something super trippy like that, a horrifying dog-like monster thing showed up right in my face and roared something that sounded like "zuul". Obviously at that point I was good and terrified. Slammed the door and ran out. There was also an issue with some pink stuff coming out of my bathtub, but I'll save that story for another day. - Drew. ;)

Brian, strictly speaking the Parker 51's feed has no fins at all. It's a tiny rod of ebonite that runs inside the tubular nib. The fins are a separate piece that encloses both, called the ink collector. Ink travels from the reservoir to the collector, down the feed's channel, to the nib slit. Interestingly, Parker wasn't the only company experimenting with this in late '30s. Sheaffer's Triumph nib works in such a similar way Parker sued them for patent infringement in the early '40s (Parker patented the 51 in 1939), won, and forced Sheaffer to pay royalties for it.
