Delighted to see Adrienne join the Pencast today. I love that there’s still great rapport between she and Drew, but a very different vibe from the one he shares with Brian. Hey Drew! I am a surgeon, and wanted to chime in on the "whip stitch." Different surgical specialties are different, of course, but I will tell you that the only use for the whip stitch that I encountered during my seven years of training or in practice, is in post-mortem situations. Best not think on it too much. ;) There are other more elegant techniques that we use day-to-day. Love you guys!! Keep up the good work!

I adored having Adrianne on this week’s episode! Regarding the “calm” descriptor she was shocked to get from the retreat, while incredibly enthusiastic, at least from this episode I think that she may have been described that way because she speaks in a soft and nice way! As far as affordable grail pens, I must agree that the Justus 95 is an underdog!! As a Justus who just got a Justus 95, it has stayed inked for months now as it just feels so nice in my hand and while writing. Thanks for sharing some joy!

This was a fun episode! I love the chemistry between Drew and Adrienne. Can we please see more of this duo when Brian needs some time off? For inks, I'd go either with Diamine or Sailor. Diamine has an impressive library. Their inks are really reasonably priced. And their interaction with the reddit community is also a lot of fun. I voted for this year's inks (first time ever Diamine created two inks!), but I haven't bought either. Sailor is pricier, but with their standard line, plus the Manyo and the ink studio lines you have quite a few options as well. For my final pen, it would have to be a Yukari Royale Nightline Moonlight or one of their maki-e pens or possibly the 2020 LE Pelikan M1000 maki-e kingfisher. I actually gasped when I saw photos of it when it was launched. It's stunningly beautiful. But it might be a tad too big/heavy to write with comfortably and too juicy, although the wetness can be adjusted. I felt Drew so much for saying, okay I was social at the party, but it's draining and I needed to tap out.

Yay! Nice to see Adrianne after talking with her on the phone on several occasions over the years. Well done Adrianne great dive into the spectrum and wavelengths. An astronomy educator for several years prior to retirement, I’m not sure that I ever “noticed” that the red band was a lot wider than the blue. Thank you. That the color of paint, dyes, ink colors are not pure light, but the result of the paint absorbing most of the colors of the spectrum while letting us perceive the color not absorbed as it is reflected back to our eyes, and everyone perceives somewhat differently. Amazing that we can agree at all on good and not so good colors. Great Cast, both of you, hope your 4th of July stuff and celebrations were good. And thanks for skipping a week, It gave me a week to catch up and to remember to comment for once. Hope Adrianne gets to fill-in again sometime.

A lovely pencast! I enjoyed it so much. You two were just great. ❤ Adrianne's "You just have one life" resonated strongly with me! Fun fact, my friend can still hum while holding his nose. He says he feels the air escapes through his eyes when doing it, so he doesn't have problems with it. "We focus on the things we dislike or condemn" - so true, Drew! It seems easier for people to gather around the negative things than the joyous ones sometimes, but fortunately the world also has people like you, who love just sharing joy and accepting all the different kinds and reasons of happiness. Thanks a lot to everyone at Goulet Pens for just being there!❤❤

Yes Drew! Joy is so infectious and why don't we infect someone today? Drew showing enthusiasm for something is one of the best things about these pencasts that I always look forward to after rough working days. I still remember how Drew got excited about the Sailor "Christmas Pudding" pen and he shared that he even liked it more than the Sailor "Nuts" pen that he was setting money aside for. It was so fun to watch as I like both of those pens! I already had purchased the Nuts one then I ended up buying the Christmas Pudding one (thanks to Drew =))) Whenever I look at my Christmas Pudding pen, I see Drew singing and praising the pen lol, making me love the pen even more!!

They do have inks that change color when exposed to UV. There was a company I think it was Del Sol, when you go out in the sun the clothing item will get colorful and then when you get out of the Sun the color disappears

I've been reading up on color changing properties (my husband did try inventing a thermocholromatic airbrush paint once.) I am no chemical expert, but from what I understand, it's that the color changing inks and paints are pigment-based, and the molecules are quite large. So in essence, they are just too big to pass through a fountain pen well.

Yes! I LOVE Drew talking about wearing your passions and making that human connection. I work at a dry cleaner so it's something people associate with almost a "chore". I try to pick people who look like they're in a funk or look like they're caught up in the monotony of the day to day and make a joke or comment on something to make that connection. I told an older woman I loved her hair (it was purple) and she just LIT UP. Or someone will comment on my pen (I use my black and pink kakuno) and then it's on. You never know who needs that human connection.

After a few months of discovering what I like and what not in this new and wonderful hobby (work bonus and tax refund well spent), I discovered how I resonate with the Goulet team. BUT NOW, I need Adrianne to do a monthly ink recommendation section (please, and thank you!)🥴

Drew, I really resonated with what you said about your energy draining after socializing at the pool party. I had a similar experience this week and it was the first time I’ve ever noticed my energy like that. I’m an introvert, and at work my boss challenged me to do a presentation by video call to 50 or so people. I was so nervous about it, I had sweaty palms and a dry mouth, and I felt my voice shaking during the presentation. And after the presentation, my energy drained. My energy was at 20% and it was really hard because I had another 3 more hours of work left. This year I’m learning more about myself and am aware that if something like this happens, I need to recharge at home and have no social activity for the rest of the day.

Lol! I watched this to find out about the amazing dip pen you were going to discuss and when I finally got to that part it was the Kakamori nib, which I already own (in brass because supposedly it’s more flexible)! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m so glad I watched anyway, because it was all really interesting and Adrienne’s explanation of the quirks of Red makes me want to research it more! You are right that the Kakimori nib is great for swatching! It’s also good for highlighting… and it’s just a very cool nib. One of those designs that make me wonder why nobody thought of that before? Lol. Your estimate of the price of the holder sent me racing to your site because I didn’t buy either of the holders that Kakimori offers because they are just ridiculously expensive (especially the wood or bamboo one!!). Unfortunately, yours is not under $12 or $15 - it’s $33 (which is still on the low side for them 😳). I use my nib with a Tachikawa Model 36 Comic Nib holder with the “pink” (it’s a very red pink 😉) grip that is squishy, but not too squishy and very comfortable for long sessions with whatever nib you put in it. I’ve held and looked at the Takimori holder and frankly I don’t see much difference other than the Takimori is longer (for no practical reason I can think of) and doesn’t have a grip. But the plastic within plastic with a plastic center thing is basically the same as the Tachikawa holders (I have older holders that have little metal parts to hold the nib and I much prefer the plastic!). As I write this, the Tachikawa is $7.09 on Amazon. They also make a holder with a blue grip and a cap, but I was afraid the cap wouldn’t fit - it would be interesting to see. Right now you guys are out of the Kakimori nib. I hope that you get the brass one in at some point and are able to review them side by size. Kakimori also makes a glass nib, which is another innovation I’m amazed no one thought of before! It’s just the end of a glass nib attached to a thingy that lets you put it into a pen holder. Much less likely to break then a whole long pen make of glass!! No dip nib that I’ve ever encountered can hold as much ink as the metal Kakimori nib - it just keeps writing and writing (that is, if you are writing thinner lines - the super wide lines go through ink much faster). It’s an expensive pen nib, but its innovative design and ability to hold lots of ink per dip AND lay down super-wide as well as extremely thin lines make it worth it!! Thanks for the video!! ❤️

Heat-sensitive film for temperature readings are alive and well for brewing kombucha: it's a black strip about 8" long that has temperatures between 60 and 100, and the sweet spot of the lower 80s in a bracketed window. They can be stuck on the outside of gallon glass jars you use for the first fermentation. The numbers seem to be different colors for different temperatures, but the colors themselves don't change.

Great Pencast (as always!). As to using only one ink brand-this is an easy one for me! It would definitely be J/Jacques Herbin. The colour and flow of their regular inks are the very best IMHO, and their shimmer inks have a perfect level of subtle shimmer, not in-your-face, but enhancing the colour of each ink.

I'm with Adrianne: Visconti Il Magnifico "the green one" 💚 I just looked online & they're on sale! 🤭 I have a brass Kakimori. I used it to draw something each day as I opened my Diamine 2022 Inkvent Calendar ("the green one" 😅💚) And though I loved playing with all those beautiful Diamine inks, if I had to choose one brand, it would be De Atramentis for the document inks. As others have said, as an artist, I need waterproof fountain pen inks. And as I commented earlier, I recently mixed Green Grey with Yellow, 2:1, and created a lovely waterproof warm green that doesn't look like pickle juice! 💚Fun pencast, as always. Enjoy your time off!

About the corned beef hash. The trick is to get as much of the moisture out before it goes in the pan. To do this, begin by heating a pan over medium heat. Don't forget to turn on the vent above your stove. While the pan is heating drain the beef in a colander or mesh strainer. Transfer to a plate with a layer of paper towels on top. Use another paper towel to gently pat the hash as dry as possible. Turn the heat on your pan to medium high and add some vegetable oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Carefully place the hash into the pan and DO NOT STIR IT. Let this cook for a few minutes until you see the crust start to form around the edges. When the hash is ready it will release from the pan with a gentle touch from a spoon. Flip what you can and repeat to get a crust on the other sides of the pieces. This will take some practice to perfect. Don't get discouraged you can do it, I belive in you.

@Drew - My mom grew up on a farm just outside of Austin, MN - the birthplace of canned Corned Beef Hash! She taught me how to cook it as a young girl- you have to use a good pan, one that stuff doesn't usually stick to. Get it hot, like searingly hot, and--this is where you have to be quick--start dropping it into the sizzling pan, give it a good toss around, like a stir fry, and spread it in a layer across the pan. Then go for the next scoop. Do this until it's all in the pan and browning, then turn the heat down to medium heat and cook it until it's got that nice crust. The key is to let it sizzle, but you have to watch it so that it doesn't burn. (Use a flat spatula to "flip it" like a burger patty.)

Really enjoying the Pencast! I have been watching the latest episodes for the past few weeks, and also working my way through from the beginning, up to episode 32 so far. Had to witness for myself the origins of the inside jokes! I found my way to fountain pens by way of art when I decided to learn to draw and paint a few years ago. I still do artwork, but I found I like fountain pens so much that I now use them for writing too whenever I can, basically any time I can choose what paper to use. No surprise, then, that if I were limited to one ink brand, it would be DeAtramentis for their Document Ink series. They work so beautifully for sketching and in combination with watercolor, and I also find them great to write with. Their color range is beautiful, too. I would miss Platinum Carbon Black, and also the Sketch Ink line from Rohrer and Klingner, but DeAtramentis would give me plenty to work with for both art and writing. I mostly use TWSBI pens, and Document Inks work great with them. I have the brass version of the Kakimori dip pen nib, and I love it, especially for drawing. As for ‘grail pens,’ I think of them as coming in two levels: one, ‘maybe someday it’s possible if I plan and save,’ and two, ‘not in this lifetime unless I win the lottery.’ 😊 Thanks for all the fun! Nice to meet Adrianne!

For ink swatching/sampling with one dip pen with lots of line widths, you gotta try the Sailor Hocoro with a fude nib. It's not as badass as the Kakimori, but it is also great for fine line and broad paintbrush ink dumping with one dip, and at a much less intimidating price.

Drew: you knew this comment was coming... Adrianne was a complete joy to have on today's Pencast! And she almost had it correct when describing wave-lengths of light (i.e. color). The point she missed was the wave-length of red is about half the wave-length of blue, so on a relative basis, the range of colors we consider red is not different than the range of colors we consider blue. A sports analogy might be the length of an American football field vs. the length of a tennis court. The net on a tennis court and the 50 yard line on a football field are exactly half the distance between the base-lines/goal lines, but the absolute distance is very different. It works much the same with the electromagnetic spectrum (which includes visible light); half-way between red and yellow is a bigger absolute number of nanometers (a billionth of a meter) than half way between green and blue, yet both teal (i.e blue-green) and orange (i.e. red-yellow) are half way between their respective primary colors. ... and Diamine is my favorite brand of ink (they seem to bleed and feather less than other brands; important to me since I often have to write on cheap copy paper at work).

An alternative to Diamine is Sailor, they actually make many more inks than you carry. They aren't as inexpensive as Diamine, though. Actually, people have 2 lives, work and home, I saw this on a TV show called Severance. I should watch it again. And again. and.....

I remember those thermometer strips. Maybe one with an actual temptation on it came out later. We had one that lit up an F for fever and maybe an N? Not sure about no fever. It was supposed to be used in the morning to quickly check if the kid had a fever or not. I actually did see one of those in the dollar store not too long ago.

I agree about correcting test papers with red ink. I had a PA that increased the number of errors she made when she saw red ink. I used the red in be abuse it was easy to see. I tried different things. In the end, a peaceful Caribean sea blue worked best. It was easy to see, and it pleased everyone.

Drew..."primarily" might be the word you were looking for. I also relate to being exhausted after dealing with crowds of people. I did some management training that was based on the MBTI a few years ago and tested as the second-most introverted person in the cohort. I explained that introverted does not equal shy, participated actively and presented on behalf of my group, received feedback from everyone that they didn't think I was an introvert (they weren't listening about the shy thing I guess)...and then went home and slept for 14 hours.

This was nice to have Adrianne join Drew with Pencast. Brian is missed but as a newbie to pen community it is nice to see that there are others that are willing to help produce the show. For Drew, we have a Breville Toaster Oven and my brother cooks the canned hash on a baking sheet. So the oven has convection but it may work with an Air Fryer also just make sure you watch it so it does not dry out too much…hope the suggestion works for you! Happy 4th everyone!

Same 11 yr old makes the best corn beef hash from a can...😃 Patience is the key, no oil in the pan, use a nonstick pan and flip often until end and then crisp up. Medium/High heat. Canned roast beef hash and stove top stuffing ... no homemade on either of these for our family.😊

The Lamy 2000 was my grail pen, but I purchased it before finding my pen style. Ordered a medium and while it writes great, it just wasn’t a good fit for my needs. Have since gotten on in an EF and love it. So my advice is to make sure your grail pen suits your writing style and uses before plunking down the $$$s.

Adrienne was absolutely right about the length of the red part of a spectrum. Red light waves are also MUCH longer than blue ones which is why there is more red in a proper spectrum. She was also correct about the cones in the eyes. Our cones read red with far more difficulty than any other colour because of how our cones perceive those longer red light waves. Another cool point is that SOME people are actually able to perceive more shades within the spectrum because they have one extra cone. Most humans have three light cones but there are some who have 4 and are called a Tetrachromat. The ability to see more colours due to an extra cone is called Tetrachromacy. I happen to be a tetrachromat and I do tend to see more shades within the spectrum than some other people who I've spoken about this with. That said, the hardest colour for me to differentiate shades in is red. Even with an extra cone in my eyes, The slower, longer light waves are a challenge.

I thought I was going to miss Brian this week. But. Drew & Adrianne you are such a joy. I was having a rough morning; but you brought my spirits up. When you discussed displaying your passions it reminded me of when we began wearing face masks. I was quickly tired of boring plain masks. So I went online. I found (& purchased) a mask that has characters from my favorite tv show when I was quite young. It has The Banana Splits on it! Most people look at me a bit weird. (Nothing new to me.) But every now and then someone breaks out in a big smile and says, "I loved them when I was a kid!" I also found, and wear, a long sleeve t-shirt of them. Now, I just need to find Pufnstuf or Casper. I have a t-shirt that has the owl, boy and the question, "How many licks..." For me it has always been just like the owl... three. "I kinda want the tongue wheel." I nearly spit out my coffee. You two are great together. Who is this Brian you mentioned?

Lovely to see Adrianne as co-host! And I’m right with her on the green marble Il Magnifico pen. As always, there is no-one like Drew for a blast-from-the-80s-past random reference : YES, that thermometer strip that looked like it was made out of camera film, with the temperature appearing (supposedly) after a minute but that NEVER worked.

Actually, I just recently decided to standardize on De Atramentis Document inks. I have HAD IT with fading inks. I'll get buy with their limited palette gladly to get dependable lightfastness. The waterproofness is just gravy.

De Atramentis Document inks are my choice as well. As for the limited palette, I've just started mixing them. I mixed the green grey with the yellow, approximately 2:1 ratio, and I now have a waterproof warm green that doesn't look like pickle juice. I'm excited to try more mixes.

@@ichirofakename Ha! Yeah, I would buy a CMYK set from Goulet, if they sold it, although I'm not planning on getting too fancy. I bought the Document sample set, and just plan on mixing various shades of brown, grey, and green (my preferred sketching colors).

Hello from England, Just wanted to say thank you for all your content. Being new into the fountain pen hobby (only a couple of months) I have found them really helpful (also a slippy slope as much deeper into the hobby than I would have been without it). I also wanted to share with you how I got into ithe hobby as I feel it maybe a bit different from alot of others. I think the seeds were sowed when as a nurse I got gifted a parker jotter ballpoint pen (so I leaned more towards ballpoints due to my work) but as a result have always been found of nice pens (my grandad was also into his fountain pens) and I used a fountain pen at primary school (elementary). But I got into fountain pens recently interestingly enough through Shodo (japanese brush calligraphy) and Shakyo (sutra copying) and came across and fell in love with the Kuretake Maki-e (style they aren't the true Maki-e you find at much higher price points) brush pens which I loved the art of as I have been getting into the hobby. My mum has had some True Maki-e furniture since before I was born that she treasures. I then came across Maki-e fountain pens that are gorgeous (but get so pricey 😢) and started watching videos online, came across yourself and learnt more about fountain pens and have now fallen deep down the rabbit hole. I now have: - 2 Kindai Maki-e Kuretake/Wancher collaboration fountain pens (F/M Jowo SS Nibs) - a clear Sailor Profit Junior + 10 Rabbit (MF SS Nib) - a Pilot 78g in Cyan (EF SS Nib) - a Parker SS Vector (M SS Nib) - this is the same model of the first fountain pen I ever used and owned when I was 8 or 9 and changed schools to one where we used fountain pens. Unfortunately I no longer have that one but got the same model to honour it in spirit. - and the best for last my first holy grail pen and most I have and might ever spend on 1 pen (my spec for my holy grail pen was one of japanese big 3, gold nib, maki-e with rabbit design) the Platinum Kanazawa-Haku Moon Rabbit in Fine (18k Gold Nib) Also not fountain pens but ones I also love: - mint green Parker Jotter Ballpoint Pen - Wrendale Leaping Hare Ballpoint Pen - Sailor Multipen Yubi Maki-e (not really maki-e but one in the spirit/style of) Rabbit Blk - I use this one for work all the time and adore it - 2 No.15 Kuretake Maki-e Monogatari Brush Pens (Blk and Red Rabbit) - 2 No.10 Tegami Letter Pens Maki-e (Blk and Red Rabbit) My new holy grail pen is a Namiki Maki-e pen (love the current offering of the Origami Rabbits) but I don't know if I will ever be able to save up and justify spending this much on a pen. But if I don't I love and treasure my Platinum. I also got my mum a Kindai Maki-e Wancher/Kuretake-collaboration Hana Maiko (F SS Jowo Nib) for her birthday in November so might end up sending her down the fountain pen rabbit hole. * SS - Stainless Steel * Blk - Black
