That was so amazing! I liked the melody of both the banjo playing and the hambone! Good rhyming, Mike Shugart! Taken over from what ohsnapium59 said...."Hambone, Hambone, where ya been?"And you continued saying, "been around the world, and back again!" I enjoyed it! It was amazing! Hahahaha made me smiled! That's cool. My dad was from Indiana, and he told me he picked it up from a black guy on a street corner when he was stationed at Jacksonville NAS around '60 or '61. There were lyrics that went with it. I only remember one verse. Hambone, hambone, where you been, out to town and back again, hambone.

The history is quite interesting. After the Stono Rebellion, the Negro Act of 1740 prohibited black people from playing the traditional African drums, as it was feared they could be used to organize insurrections. Hambone was one of the techniques used developed to get round this ban (another is the hand clapping so prevalent in gospel music). So American black music evolved in a different way from African music in other slave colonies, such as those in Brazil where drumming is, till this day, so heavily present. So, yes, it is as American as it gets, but let´s not forget why.

This reminds me of "step" in school (k-12) there were always groups of people that would create rhythms with their legs (stomping) and hands (clapping and body tapping) it was really something special and it was a homage to African American culture.
