And yes there are bats under there especially over the section referred to as ball ground, but as long as you have light bats wont come near you.

This cave had a fourth entrance that was blocked in the fifties by a storm. The only section of the cave that i have not entered is the area called piano.
@cassinko2 жыл бұрын
I have been to the area called piano. From the main entrance, you go to "Daylight" opening. On the left side of daylight, there is an opening. You climb up, or have someone push you horizontally with your torch and you are there in a dry area, powdery dirt. You will find more stalactites and stalagmites. We used stones to hit the stalactites and the echoing sound sounds like a piano. We broke them. Little did we know the damage we were doing. Gourie Cave is in Coleyville/Camp/ Ticky-ticky area...approx. three miles from Christiana. Regular visitor 1974 -1980

I know a cave way bigger than this in maroon town st James, went in there once n I wouldn't go back

Possibly the Peterkin - Rota system. There are three caves associated, all of them quite large. But Gourie, although it's narrow, is much longer.

When I was growing up in the 80's and 90's this cave was buzzing with activity especially in the summer time. As young boys especially we used to play ball then go dung a cave go cool off. Ever since one tragic incident in the late 90's though activity to the cave was next to nothing..... Sad
@JCO20025 жыл бұрын
We weren't aware of the accident. Could you give us some info on that? Stefan, JCO.

@@JCO2002 I tried to find a relevant article but couldn't. I dont remember the exact date but I think it was in the late 90's or early 2000's when a female taxi driver went missing. After long search she was found face down in the cave. From hence the cave haven't been as active as it used to be

@@jellojaw Thanks for that. I wish people wouldn't use caves and sinkholes to dispose of bodies. We've had to remove two of them so far, and it wasn't fun. You might not know, but Gourie is the longest cave in Jamaica at 3.5 km. When you enter at the steps, you can turn downstream and go a very long way until you hit a sump. A little bit of airspace in a small hole in the wall allows you to continue much further. We haven't actually been to the very end ourselves - ran out of time last time we tried (was before the visit in this vid). It was January, we'd been in and out of cold water for hours, and had to retreat. Coldest I've ever been in Jamaica. But we were only a couple of hundred metres short of the end. The complete cave was mapped during the 70's by the Jamaica Caving Club out of UWI during multiple visits. You have to be careful, though. There's serious flood risk once you're a long way downstream. The water can rise fast, and it takes hours to get out - too long before the water hits the roof. Not the way I'd prefer to die.

As kids we had no idea of the risks we were taking, we use to trod far into that cave, that's where I learned to swim even. We would sometimes spend up to 5 hours or more in that cave. We never always just go for the tour and exit right away, we had our spots that we would go to swim. We even have tubes that we used to hide in the cave that we pulled out whenever we visit. There is one area in that cave that hasn't really being explored to the fullest. Many people dont even k yow it exists, we use to call it ball ground because its flat and dry like a play field. That's where we used to hide our tubes.
