If uric acid (urate) crystals, one of the products of protein metabolism, accumulate in the joint, it can activate the immune system and cause gouty arthritis. It is also called crystal arthropathy. In general, it resembles a skin infection called cellulitis with redness, swelling, and temperature increase in the foot's 1st toe metatarsal joint (metatarsophalangeal joint). If left untreated, crystal deposits are called tofus and cause bone and joint damage. Reducing uric acid and anti-inflammatory drugs and avoiding alcohol, seafood, and red meat is necessary for preventive purposes.
