Saying that fed gov't unions result in "gov't against itself" is about as meaningful as saying that private sector unions result in "business against itself." Typical right-wing rhetorical slight of hand.

The difference is the businesses would eventually fail and cease to exist. Which is precisely why private sector unions have all but vanished. Pay being driven by your individual productivity is far better of an incentive, from a profit standpoint, than planting roots at a job and watching the clock hands spin around. The government uses the redistribution of wealth to it's advantage by allowing these businesses to exist. They choose who wins and who loses through subsidies. Just picture the government getting a piggyback ride from the private sector and then in return we as a society spit on the businessman for making any of what we have even possible. Government takes none of the blame but wants all of the credit. If every business was unionized in the public sector then all business would be inefficient and expensive. Workers would be impossible to fire and decentivised to be productive. On top of that there would be no private sector to steal from and bail us all out. If something is good then it's ALL good and free markets are all good. Where markets are left free, individuals flourish and countries get rich.
