Pure figurehead. The Governor General (in theory the Monarch's representative in Australia) does have some powers, and before exercising those powers would be expected to 'consult' with the Monarch. But this is really just pure tradition and symbolism. The reality is the Governor General, always an eminent Australian in recent times, is appointed by the Australian Prime Minister, which the Monarch will approve without exception. So in practice Australia already has its own head of state, appointed by the government of the day. Everything else, and reference to "The Crown", is totally powerless tradition and history from our early days as a British colony.

It's irrelevant what the governor general or anyone in officialdom says. Britain has had no authority over Australia since the start of Federation. Their monarch does not reign over us. However, the result of a Republic referendum saw Australia choose to remain with the Commonwealth. That was of our own choosing and can be taken to mean that we acknowledge the British monarch in a symbolic way, not as our monarch in the traditional sense. The Commonwealth countries are allies, and friends, and that's good for all involved!!!!

If the the monarch dies the oath doesn't die with it, it transferred with the crown, though it is traditional for such oaths to be reaffirmed to the new monarch. I believe only the Victorian government actually can't sit without reaffirming it's oath to the new King. Also you didn't answer my question. Why would we want to be a republic?
