sorry andrej but thats was frankly a comical amount of sweat falling out of the mask, must have been a relief to take off.
@cbrnacademy5 ай бұрын
You can't actually feel that at all while wearing the mask. The sweat accumulates in various parts "under the hood" and the only thing I noticed was there were more and more drops of sweat sliding my ear canal, so the surprise after the doffing was genuine. However, I was imagining how it would feel in let's say minus temperatures or really cold weather. Should I do a winter GP-5 test when the time comes?

@@cbrnacademy In cold weather, you don't sweat as much because there's no need for it: heat is dissipated by conduction. I can confirm, however, that on warmer days, sweat collects very quickly inside and flows into the ears. I try to move the sweat that collects to the bottom of the mask as much as possible, where it is then partially removed in the form of drops with the exhaled air.

@@hakade5846 i tried it in cold weather, due to the very cold air temperature the water in your breath accumulates in the mask as condensation a couple minutes and it starts filling up, the exhale valve will let it drip out.

@@cbrnacademy Probably somehing like a civillian ГДЗР «Шанс», that mask (yellow rubber) comes with filters purposed not for filtering out known combat chemicals, but for filtering out any carbon monoxide. For GP-5 those filters are called "гопкалитовые патроны", I've learned from my half an year of "civillian defence" lectures at univercity. By the way, we all have those at our workplace (I'm an IT worker at a local bank), instruction tells it will last for at least breathing 8 hours in a forest fire or at least 30 minutes in a closed house fire. Professional firefighters in Russia always use oxygen tanks, if you use a filter you'll probably get as much oxygen as a mountain climber. But for someone who wants to get out of the fire without breathing in something that will force him to losing conscionness even feeling lack of oxygen would be a micarle. And ofcourse we only have one gas mask thread standard since soviet times so it's all interchangeable, in some variants can be even threaded one upon another.

I like the GP5 for the novelty and it being cheap as hell. High marks in Soviet aesthetics and "cool" imo or creepy. The fact the USSR built so many cheap variations of gas masks is really something, I don't think the US ever got close to building as many masks, since it was privatized and not a government program. If you compare Soviet masks to some American masks of the era, like the M17, they are both relics of the cold war. It would be insane to use them and seriously think it would protect you.

Eastern block countries invested enormous sums of money into manufacture of civil defense protective equipment and shelters. In America during that period, people presumably followed our slogan "You're on your own" instead and back then we didn't even exist, WOW! There have been a few shelters here and there but as you said, it was nowhere near the size of government programs on the other side of the barricade.

In my experience and personal opinion, the mask you want to use should be one that’s easy to don, seals well, and suits whatever threat you’re expecting to face. I generally prefer modern masks, but that’s more because of my field and the fact I only stock the M50 and the parts for the M51 conversion with a few scattered M40s. Generally, I would say use whatever works best for you but also account the advantages and disadvantages of what you’re donning and recognize that you’re only dealing with respiratory threats. Also account for the filters you’re using and what they’re rated for, as a filter unit will not protect you against everything, notably some filter units like the M61 filter unit for the M50 are capable of filtering most things except for chlorine gas, which goes straight through. Also account for how you’ll carry it, how easy it is to PMCS, how it handles getting wet, etc. but, that’s all I got for advice.
@Cru1283 күн бұрын
Other thing- learn what’s easiest to size properly and account for factors such as your hair. Fully encapsulated masks that cover the whole head are fine, but it is always good to account for the fact that you might or might not have hair and maybe another mask would be more comfortable and better suited for you.
@kevinstrade27524 ай бұрын
Considering the Soviet Union made 100million plus, one for just about every man and woman in the country, it is a rather basic but functional design. It is still being issued to training units in Russia. Oh and about the asbestos issue, yeah, filters have 3-13% asbestos in the paper lower level, yeah there's a bit of a danger but if you have to use one of these, asbestos is your least worry. You can get more modern filter which I recommend if you need to use this often. These aren't the best of modern but they are cheap and will get the job done if ever needed.
@therealspeedwagon1451Ай бұрын
If you’re getting one for purely collector’s value then you can modify the filter to make it compatible with modern NATO gas mask filters, but this breaks the seal and if you’re genuinely planning on using this for anything carbon monoxide related or are some doomsday preppor then maybe the GP-5 isn’t the best option. But hey, it’s dirt cheap and available basically everywhere.

The MP-5 gas mask is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. It is stiff as a cat's tail, uncomfortable, difficult to fit. After an hour of wearing it, a ditch appears on the forehead that does not disappear for the next 48 hours and you have to explain to everyone that it is not from hitting a table. In addition, after a short time the glass of this mask becomes cloudy and yellow. The MP-5 is a licensed version of the French ARFA mask. I really do not know why such a terrible product was purchased. In Poland, the MP-5 mask is now being replaced with the MP-6 mask, which is light, ergonomic, has low breathing resistance, is comfortable and can be easily adjusted to the head.

Part of polish version of the GP-5 gas mask (MUA) has voice diafragm. And no: you must not use such old gas masks, even with a new, well-fitted filter. The reason is the lack of certainty that the rubber non-return valves of the gas mask are functional. In this mask, they are made of thin rubber, which after years of disuse and lack of maintenance may not have the original elasticity and will not provide the mask with a proper seal. Now all such old masks (not only GP-5, but also, for example, M-65) should not be used if they are (too) old and have been stored incorrectly, because in combat conditions this can be dangerous.

This really made me laugh, good one. I've actually seen many people walking around with similar old gas mask carriers as their personal bags. It costs next to nothing and it has this vintage look that's IN nowadays.

You almost hit on its most valuable characteristic, If you have a beard, a modern gas mask will not work. With this one it goes over the beard. You may not have time to shave during a nuclear attack.
@cbrnacademy24 күн бұрын
Yes, but on the other hand it's completely unusable for people with hair, especially long hair. In our latest video (Why Santa can't use a gas mask) we showcased an Israeli CBRN hood that's meant for people with beard and long hair as well, feel free to give it a watch.

I don't think this particular type of a gas mask would be the best option but I'm amazed that no Western company produces rather simple and affordable respirators in contrast to the expensive "tAcTicAl" ones.
@thebigpotateАй бұрын
@cbrnacademy that is an extremely fair point, mira safety has a mask that's vaguely like the GP-5 but it's a child's respirator and more expensive

@@thebigpotate MIRA Safety is exactly on the opposite side when it comes to affordable respirators. Their business model could be briefly described as "We buy any gas masks cheaply from manufacturers that are unable to make bigger sales themselves and we use guntubers to promote them as cutting-edge and tactical just to jack up prices tenfold."

Only thing I don’t like about helmet style masks is that you need to be shaved bald. All gas masks you have to shave your face to get a good seal sure, but while you can still put this mask on with a full head of hair, it hurts like hell.

what the fuck there is asbestos on this filters ??? is it rly that dangerous or what ... i have one wich i used for some party's and stuff and now im rly concerned about my health . can someone tell me ?
@cbrnacademy24 күн бұрын
Nah, you'll be fine. It's just a general safety precaution not to use old filters as there might be a possibility of asbestos fibers getting loose due to the filters age. But in no way using them "casually" warrants a cancer or anything.
@faulty4206919 күн бұрын
I personally have one, so i came here to say its only dangerous if you have a number 5 filter, as it is the only one that has asbestos in it
@cbrnacademy19 күн бұрын
What specific designation you have in mind? Because the filter is called GP-5, so there is number 5 by default.

Many people look at gas masks through the "affordability optics" which is understandable since new modern gas masks cost hundreds of dollars/euros. Not to mention there are many countries where you can't buy any or it's downright illegal to own one. In general we don't recommend using legacy respirators and that's the main point of the video. But isn't it better than anything at all? Especially with a new, reliable filter.

I was sitting in the living room wearing that filter for fun when the Mrs came home. I was wearing it for a good hour. How fucked am I?
@toryknotts80265 ай бұрын
I wonder if you can wear glasses with this, it dose cover your ears, ergo the arms of your glasses. As for the asbestos filter, if its the only filter around and if you are at the point where you need this thing, I doubt you will be too picky, or will live long enough to car about asbestos exposure ( I'd be the least of your worrys!).
@hakade58465 ай бұрын
You can't wear traditional glasses and this gas mask. However, there were special plastic inserts that allowed you to use corrective lenses. Regarding asbestos filters, I agree with your statement.
@cbrnacademy5 ай бұрын
I checked the original manual and there was no mention of any sort of optical inserts so if you need glasses just to see a thing, bad luck. Your have a point about the filter in case of having nothing else available but again in my videos I can't leave a room for such scenario as people would automatically think it's OK to use it so I rather say don't use it at all. As I said, it's not about asbestos only, it's mainly about the fact these filters are useless at this point. Better than nothing? Sure. Should you use it? No, but in the end it's up to you to decide for yourself. You're on your own. 😎

@@cbrnacademy I took some old prescription glasses I had, took out the lenses, & put them on the inside of the lenses. To further secure my lenses inside the mask, I put clear tape on the sides that are out of my vision. It works great & it's barely noticeable from the outside.
