NHS care can be a “death sentence” for some patients, the Health Secretary has said as the Prime Minister called for better use of technology to make the NHS “fit for the next 75 years”.
Ministers have launched a consultation on the future of the NHS, promising to put patients and staff at the heart of its forthcoming 10-year health plan.
Wes Streeting said that the NHS is going through the “worst crisis in its history” while Sir Keir Starmer said that transformation of the health service would be a “moment in our history”.
Talk’s Ian Collins and Isabel Oakeshott discuss the day’s top stories.

This Government might as well just jail the lot of us and be done with it.

My mother twice received letters stating she had missed appointments. She hadn't and had her appointment book to prove it. On both occasions the nurse had forgotten to update the system. How many other so called 'missed' appointments are like these?

Pre-covid you could get an appointment relatively easily. Post covid it has been flaming impossible - whether that's as a result of the deaths of thousands of GPs through contracting covid I'm not sure - although I would have thought that would have hit the headlines! Maybe it's Brexit related? Although many GP's are of Asian or African origin and not European so that makes no sense either. Maybe its the influx of foreign nationals using the NHS? But we are told that this is not the case and and incomers have to go through many checks to access public services. So I am at a loss - but I know if i call tomorrow at 08:00 when the surgery opens - There will be no appointments available for me.

GP appointment. I haven’t seen a GP since prior to COVID. I’m fobbed off with a call back from a doctor. Normally a locum with resolution prescription and on one occasion go to A&E The role of a GP today is pass the parcel mentality

I find this frankly hilarious. I haven’t been able to make a GP appointment since 2020. Either online or visiting the surgery. It has got so bad that today I changed doctors to one that actually makes appointments. As a consequence I’d love to know where the word ‘stress’ is applicable.

I am so distrustful of the NHS now that unless I am incapacitated and someone else calls for an ambulance, I shall never set foot in an NHS facility ever again. There thats saved the government money already.

During the lockdowns they cancelled my appointments for B12 injections, which is essential and life saving for those of us with Pernicious Anaemia, yet they kept sending me invitations to go and get the covid jab. I am still getting invitations for both those and the flu jab yet they still haven't recommenced my B12 jabs and I am having to source those for myslef and do it myself.

Yes, it is not always the patients fault, when they have not been able to cancel appointments. We are told that, if we have a cold or cough, we should not attend, ironically enough, a GP appointment. I have recently had to cancel an appointment on those grounds. As a partially sighted person, I have difficulty dealing with the on-line site. Even typing this message on my tablet has taken me a great deal of time. I need to telephone the surgery. It is incredibly difficult to get through. I did eventually manage to cancel but, it isn't easy. Technology is not always making things easier. It depends who you are and what limitations you have.

Im sure even Isobel Oakeshott should understand that the medical service can do nothing when it comes to unforeseen circumstances ie: emergencies, it's the policy of the hospital to treat those who can't wait first. Even in planned surgery times can change according to what happens unexpectedly.

You need to be able to get an appointment first before you can miss it although if you have never paid into the system appointments are a plenty.

I am ignoring any appointments at my GPs surgery since they introduced having to book appointments on line through a private company. I have tried to work with it but just can't manage it. Everything not involving making an appointment is fine so most of my ongoing health care goes on.

Highly trained nurses are doing a good job filling in for doctors. But don,t forget you only get 15 minutes per patient which they stress is sometimes not enough. And they prescribe medication if needed. They do a good job under the stresses there put under.

We should be doing it the other way around like in the likes of NZ.There is a small charge for seeing the GP. This also makes people think before going instead of going down the road for a bottle of cough syrup or just droppiing in for a chat. As for Charles - out of order in the setting. Good on her though - doubt Charlie gets to hear what his lackeys don't want him to hear. And he's in bed with some horrible people now!

You can still afford to go private, whether that be you or your partner. Someone please let me know what he or her have produced as evidence for there opinions. Pleased state background, economic background, personal background. You’re better than everyone just by your opinion. She has her views, did you see she expressed what she wanted to say. Opinion for that??? Just talking bs without substance!!!
