Under a cobalt blue sky, we watch the crew switch cars with #1601, a GP9 on the ONR in Cochrane Ontario. The engineer has the old girl really talking, as he switch cars out in the yard. Thanks for watching. jackmp294.5

Geeps were work horses and LOVE hearing them rev up like that. I can remember back in the mid 60's the KCS used lots of them for local switching, day and night. From my room, could hear them whine as they pulled and pushed freight cars around during the night. Thanks for the memories.

For me, it was the geeps in proviso yard. Not only did we hear the whine, but the slamming of cars and the squeal of the retarders on the hump

When I was a kid, Penn Central ran a bunch of GP7's and GP9's on local freight and switching on the industrial branch that used to run through my home town. You could hear those Roots blowers echoing off the hills all over the place!

@@daveyboy_I went on to become a class one engineer before these were retired. Once a road freight lost one of its three SD40s. They sent me in relief service to rescue it with light power. The rescue units were a pair of GP9s. The train stopped on the single iron, so I had to couple onto the front of the consist. I had one of my best buddies, Uncle Si (he looks like Si Robertson). We ran down the main at track speed with those two 567s singing away. It was something to behold!

I grew up at (what is likely) the origin point of many of those boxcars. CN owned the line to Cochrane, at the time. They had 2-3 GP9s pull the train and do the switching outside the paper mill. Ah that sound... 🙂

That is a "Torpedo" GP9. They put larger fuel tanks on it when built so they moved the air tanks up on top. Hence the nickname.
@1575murray
@1575murray 6 жыл бұрын
Many of the "torpedo geeps" were built for passenger use where more fuel and water capacity were needed. However some of them were also built for freight use without steam generators.

They also put the tanks on top to keep the air system from icing up. The heat from the exhaust and prime mover kept things happy. Also it allowed them to have a bigger fuel tank capacity for longer run periods.

So I'm guessing a GP7 is a naturally aspirated GP9? Kind of like the GP38 and GP40, but with a 567 instead of a 645.
@1jackdk

No, the GP7 and GP9 are both naturally aspirated -- at least in the sense that EMD uses the term. They're supercharged, with Roots blowers. Turbocharged engines came later.
