As always, glad to watch and find a hidden gem-EmuDeck support for Windows. While I’ve long evangelized for Retrobat, I’ll be keeping an eye out for the EmuDeck Windows support coming out of beta. SteamOS interface + EmuDeck Windows support is game-changing for game rig setups in the living room as well as the growing Windows handheld market. Great work, as always!

Thank you sir for demonstrating the speakers when your hands are over them. This was something no other reviewer has mentioned. I also like how you keep your detailed info easy to understand but concise enough to someone that knows very little about TDP, software-tweaking and the like. The Phawx is amazing when doing his charts but at times I get lost in terms of all those graphs and charts. As much as I'd like a smaller device to tote around, I still love my Steam Deck's comfort and better audio placement. Cheers!

One more thing that wasn't mentioned in this video; the display has a native landscape orientation, which means it can handle some older games better. There are some games, like RDR2, FFVII Crisis Core (PC), etc, that will often open up in a small window on other handhelds because of the portrait screen orientation on other handhelds. That problem basically doesn't exist on this handheld.

Just a note: It's my understanding that the ryzen 7040 series (Phoenix APUs, meant to occupy the same types of products as the 6600U, and 6800U) were designed to be drop-in compatible with 6000 series mainboards...Meaning that depending on exactly how any 6800U handhelds were implemented, we may see 7840 variants of them in a short-ish timeframe (the earliest ones may be available around August if I had to guess), and they should have around a 30% performance improvement at higher (for a handheld) TDP rating of around 28 watts, and I'm hoping that ratio holds at lower TDPs as well, though at 12-15 watts I think they may start performing similarly, much as the Steamdeck / Win4 operate similarly around 8 watts IIRC, though this part is speculation.

Retro Game Corps is top-tier, but I do think the Phax is probably the best reviewer right now, though I hold Taki Udon and ETA Prime in high regard too. Out of all of them, Taki and RGC limit themselves pretty hard to just handhelds which limits the frequency of their videos, so I think that also hurts them a bit too. I do enjoy how the Phawx has more editorial-like conversation videos, how-tos, and explores side emulation/small tech devices in between major handheld releases.

The PSP jailbreak with the service battery trick was such a cool thing. I don't think that was until a while after launch, though and I can't figure out how I did it before service batteries. One comparison I have not seen - It really seems like they drew a lot of ideas from the OQO series of UMPCs. Channel quality has gone up a TON recently. The size comparisons, the information presentation is just all really great. Just all really great to see. Great stuff man.

The first PSP homebrew method involved having 2 memory cards and the homebrew had 2 folders. One normal and one with a similar name but with _______ at the end making the text too long and bypassing some security check. We had to swap the card during the splash screen. Then hackers figured out how to do the exploit from a single memory stick. After that came save game exploits. GTA Liberty City Story famously had it. You would load the game and load a particular save file and it started an homebrew launcher. The Pandora battery came after that and that's when everything really got wild on the PSP. It was the start of custom firmwares and being able to start anything straight from the menu. Even PSP iso loaded on the memory stick. There really wasn't much Sony could do at that point to stop it. New firmwares were decrypted in hours and new security keys could just be added to custom firmwares.

the fact that this was released 4~5 months ago and the Ryzen 7840U only just launched in May (about a month ago) goes to show how increasingly fast APU manufacturing has become. I know GPD "re-released" their Win Max 2 with the new 7840U, im not surprised that a new revision of the Win4, or possibly the Win5, will be revealed in the coming months. Out of all the PC Handhelds releasing from many different brands, GPD is always tops it for me with their extra bells and whistles that outshine other handhelds.

Hey Russ! Another great video. The reason I love my Steam Deck so much is the ergonomics. I mainly use it for retro and indie PC gaming, not a lot of console gaming. I almost exclusively run Windows off an SD card. I only go into SteamOS/Linux for games that require the TDP, framerate, etc to be modified. The touchpad is my primary input since I mostly play games with a MnK interface and I will never buy another handheld that doesn't have one. Strategy games, RPGs and colony sims are my jam. I even played through Starcraft on it and had a blast. Is there any way you could add a bit of content to your reviews about how well the touchpads work and feel in-game on devices that have them?

For my use case, is sat on the couch near my girlfriend and she get annoyed about the Retroid pocket 3+ click noise of the buttons and the dpad.

The notch at the bottom is not for the dock station. It's for the LTE module attachment. One thing I do wonder and have not seen anyone test is recharging from a power bank. The way Windows is made usually requires 45w power for Windows to start accepting power input. I'm also very curious if this thing could handle a VR headset plugged into it. In theory you just need the USB port and HDMI out via the USB-C. The GPU is about equivalent to a GTX1060 and that's what I had when I got my VR Headset and it ran well.

I remember being one of the first to attempt to jailbreak my PSP. It was done with Lumines game. That game increased in price over at eBay because of that. The GPD Win 4 looks nice, but I already have a Steam Deck. I like to buy one handheld every 3-4 years.

Awwwwwwe yeah!!! Now THIS x86 device is what I'm interested in! I just wish they gave us lower spec processors to save a few bucks, like that I3 that's going to be on the Loki, it'll be great for battery life.

I still play my cfw PSP for ps1 and gba games. It being so light with amazing battery life is hard to not turn too even with a steam deck handy. If I didn't already have a steam deck I would be 100% buying one of these. Still hasn't stopped me from strongly considering to buy one.... That psp styling though.

This device is tempting, great for games like ETS2, ATS, but I think I might wait to see how the AyaNeo Slide goes, it might be the better device when you take in the software AyaNeo has been working on.

41:48 I am really glad you mentioned that anything over 200-300 dollars is an investment. Like for me, yes I like spending the lowest amount I can, it's not so much I am cheap I just don't have a high budget and a lot of my needs don't require more than that. I do feel re-assured that you feel like the GPD is worth that high end price tag. I unfortunately just have to wait. I spent like 430 bucks for the Steam Deck and that is honestly my whole budget but it's been worth every penny. I wish I could spend the money for a device like this but I really can't. I can't spend 800 bucks for something like this. If they came down to the console budget in the 400-500 dollar range only then could I make a jump for something like this plus I already have so many devices that I really can't be having that many electronics. If I could sell all those handhelds I got to trade in for one of these to drop the price some and then spend the like 400-500 then it wouldn't be so bad.

Your lights in the back are tripping me out everytime it jump-cuts!! 😵 But great extra info overview, as Ive watched so many to see if I want to pull the trigger. From your other video on the state of handhelds early 2023, I am exactly like you in wanting a smaller form factor, and having a windows os in the system is almost mandatory for ease of use. I actually have an old gpd clamshell one (cant remember the name) that I got in 2018 and I also bought the Ayn Odin, (and used your videos/website to set it up, thanks again!) So the GPD Win 4 is looking amazing as an all in one device upgrade wise. The only thing that's holding me back is GPD's non friendly history on customer service issues if the console breaks or doesnt work on arrival. Does that not worry you on dropping $800+ on a device when the company has a touchy customer service history? Might be even worse for me cause I want the 2tb 32gb version, and it's over $1k. :(

Cause I needed one more reason to know you have exceptional taste! (love the Pedro the Lion shirt) Great review it looks incredible. Would love to dive into the X86 handheld market but it's just so hard to part with roughly $1000 for PC gaming. The deck is still an exceptional option, but it's tough to justify especially when there are so many great cheap handhelds and I already have a desktop PC, alas it's not portable buuuuuut the handhelds are so very portable. What a time to be a handheld enthusiast, it's really an embarrasment of options and just when it seemed more and more like Ninetendo was going to be the only one still in the portable game space. Arghhh! :(

I also find their position awkwardly far forward but my favorite thing about the Steam Deck is how incredibly powerful the control customization is. The only thing I can't always work around with Steam Input is the dpad. I really need to look into a mod for that thing, it's so mushy and stiff with some pretty unpleasant diagonals.

I actually wanted to buy something like the Asus PN64 to upgrade my Gamecube-PC (PC inside a Gamecube Case). But now that I've learned about the GPD Win 4 I have decided to exchange my PC with the GPD Win. I think it's awesome to have a PC you can regulate down to 5W TDP and reduce the energy cost to a minimum. And of course this handhald can replace my bad Laptop and everything on the go. I'm really looking forward to this Handheld!

@@RetroGameCorps One factor that you forgot to mention is Ease of Use. The Valve SteamDeck is a Portable Console which happens to use PC Parts. It's almost a seamless experience like picking up a PS5 or NSwitch. The GPD Win-4 is a PC. It's not a console. There's a bigger barrier for Pickup 'n Play compared to the SteamDeck, NSwitch, or PS5. But having WindowsOS means it's a lot more flexible than other options. In particular, with many Emulators prioritising Windows over Linux, macOS, or Android (x360, PS3, WiiU emulation are good examples).

Absolutely love the flow of these handheld PCs that are coming out! This ensures that if Nintendo messes up and not bring us a next gen Switch that is on par or better than these; we will at least have these options. IF they know what is best; they will deliver, but again if they don't, then I will pick up one of these instead and not look back.

Nintendo has actually increased production on the Switch which is craaaazy and not a good sign for an ugrade soon. The Tegra was 5 years old 7 years ago if I'm not mistaken; it needs to be upgraded. Idk why Nintendo are so stubborn.
