also, if you have a spare phone lying around the house, you can turn it into a webcam and leave it by the multimeter and then check on your phone as you pull fuses. thank you for the helpful video. I was curious if you were troubleshooting something specific in your car and if you were able to resolve it and what was the issue and how did you fix it? thank you!

Nice job making this video. Very good explanations. I hope I can figure my issue out. Thank You!

I think I am right in saying that the car will 'wakeup' and pressurise the brake system as you walk up to the car, with the key? So try leaving the key well away from the car before looking for a parasitic draw.

I noticed after I turn off the Prius something kicks in after shut down like a pressurized tank or water battery cooler system I been noticing if I don’t run my car for 2days my battery drains and I have it recharge fully on a home charger and maybe my after market alarm might be draining my battery as battery has been replaced to new one a couple of months

My daughters car has frequent dead batteries, especially when it sits for a few days. I always ask if she leaves on the dome light. She always leaves the key in the car, that must be the problem. It's a 2010 Prius.

Great idea, I assume you can do this on any 12 volt vehicle

Thank you for that demonstration of how to measure current running through your battery. I'm a little curious as why opening the trunk would draw 1.5 amps. That seems to be a lot of electricity for a light. (unless opening the trunk turns on many lights on the interior).

ECU, Smart Key are just two I can think of

It does light up the interior. But they will timeout usually in a few minutes EXCEPT for the back hatch light he turned off.

What if you pull a fuse and find out what is causing the excessive draw. how do you fix that?
@Disappointed7396 жыл бұрын
The logic is similar--divide and conquer. You read the box lid to see what the fuse is for. You find that device. You unplug it at the device. If the current draw goes away, you know the problem is most likely the device you unplugged. While you are there, with the fuse out, you run a continuity check for the 12 v hot (downhill, toward the device) side of the fuse to the body of the car or "ground". If you get a significant reading, you may also have a wiring or relay problem--something is grounded. If you do not, the device you unplugged is drawing the current. Etc.

This is when you break out the schematics and trace how many places that fuse feeds. On a Toyota the drawings are available for a fee from the Toyota “Technical Information System”, TIS. Often one fuse feeds several components. If a given fuse removal drops the current you disconnect each load one by one. No removable fuse found to be the cause? The engine fuse box has a long white module with several fusible links hardwired into the box. Now you have to either disconnect the fusible link loads one by one or use a technique where you measure the millivolt drop across individual fusible links. More mv drop means more current draw. Finally removing and reinstalling a fuse will often wakeup connected computers and networks. In that case you have to wait for that cpu to go to its sleep mode.

i checked with trunk open and it showed 1amp draw.since no boot light on i thought it would be ok. after this video will try with trunk closed.does it matter if key fob is near or not
