Very satisfying to watch. I’ve been out of town so I’m just trying to catch up with all the work you’ve been getting done. This reminds me about my plan to start a custom hay business, not with the little Kubota, obviously, something bigger and way older, but I might give it a go for fun, see how it works out. When done right there’s actually a fair amount of money in it. We’ll see. I wish I could justify a flail mower out in these parts but the only place I’d want to mow that I can get the tractor into and OUT OF would be the roadside ditch and the county already mows that for us. I love helping our neighbors too but our new ones don’t really need my help as much, or rather, they’re not as interested in being close friends. Anyways, another great video, as always. Always amazes me that you find the time to do such nice edits, the quality of your videos is awesome and has only been growing since the beginning. I think with all these implements you’re going to be borrowing from Farmer’s, you should probably ask for some pallet forks too, if you know what I mean ;) I wouldn’t trust myself chaining stuff to my tractor to lift it out of a truck bed, but then again I don’t have own a truck, or have anything to lift out of it, so I guess I’ve never done it. Another great video GP! As I see it, but maybe I'm wrong, the one advantage a brush cutter has over the flail mower is that you are able to go in reverse w/ the brush cutter while still on the ground and continuing to cut while the flail mower must be raised and can't cut while in reverse, thus saving some time.The flail mower looks to be much more maneuverable though. These mowers great in a vineyard. We had a problem with a rotary, Brush Hog, type mower because it just cut the top off the prunings. We go a used 5ft flail like this one with hammer or scoop knifes and it pick the prunings up and shredded them.

Very cool bud. I'm in northern Ontario with a B7800 but use a 5 foot rotary cutter that definitely does not do as good of a job. I have to get one of those so compact . Thanks for showing this. 👍

Gp I've used rotary my whole life till about 5 years ago. I've got a similar b2320 and run a jd 360 5foot flail and could not be happier. I now run the split "y" teeth and can now 5 foot tall to 4 inch or only adjust my top link and mow a 2 in tall yard. They take way less power than a Bush hog, leave materials evenly distributed, and in my case can not throw any debris.

GP Outdoors, I watched the video and bought one. I put it on my little Magnatrac Dozer and it didn't work out to well. The little dozer flattens things out and they do not "recover" fast enough for the hammer blades to go to work. So, I will be attaching it to my tractor, about the same size as yours, and seeing it it works out better. Thanks for the video!

@@GPOutdoors yeah, their two largest models have that as an option. My little dozer weighs twice as much as my 4-wheel drive tractor. It is incredible what it can do. I worked with an old engineer. In WW2 he would have a little Cat dozer dropped on the islands to build airstrips. They weighed about 6000 pounds. I would rather have my dozer than my Kubota, and that is saying a lot!

Love the symmetry, the safety, the even distribution, the mulching, and if the finish from the hammers is good enough, leave em on. Why is it so satisfying to see the before and after? Interesting how brown the finished mat was after. Looks like its close enough in to not need to counter weight of the scoop in front. Use the rotary cutter if want to return the rock throwing at Bigfoot in the woods.

I noticed your transmission shaft (between gearbox and pulley) doesn't appear to have inlet or discharge ports to for oil for the shaft bearings. I just purchased a Titan flail mower and the owner manual indicated this shaft was going to need .35 Lt of oil but was missing the inlet/discharge ports. Are your bearings at each end of this shaft lubricated with grease fittings? Mine are not, yet no input/discharge ports for oil either.

I walked through to check first before I started mowing as I know that no mowers are made to cut or hit rocks on purpose so I wanted to check for any before I fired it up. Between the two of us, I did hit one by accident. Oops. But no damage at all and it just kept cutting. I checked after and nothing was damaged underneath. Whew! Cheers!

Nice enough job on those trails for sure. How does it do making a trail? Considering getting a B series with loader/grapple on front and adding a flail to the rear. My idea is the loader would knock stuff down before the flail mows it. Does that sound like anything you've done already? Thanks

Good morning! Thanks for the question. I started making trails and have a few videos on the channel - (starting with video #188). I don't think the flail would do well for "making" the trail. I used my grapple and the box blade primarily. Reason is because there are lots of rocks and stumps etc that I had to pull out along the way and the scarifiers on the box blade allowed me to rip them out (as well as the grapple) and then I used the box blade to grade and smooth thereafter. It worked very well for me. The flail would be great for maintaining the trails after but not sure it would be the right tool for creating the trail. Just my thoughts. Good luck!

Thanks for the video. I've been debating the bush hog v flail for a while. This is an encouraging argument for the flail for my purpose. I like the compact design and the even distribution of the mulch/clippings. I did notice the minimum HP rating for their smallest flail unit is 16-30 HP while the B2601 has a PTO HP rating of 19.5. Did you feel like your output was under-powered at any time? Looks like it handled it just fine.

Good morning Scott. No power issues at all. A few times you would have heard the engine rpm drop a bit but that was because I was driving too fast when I drove into a thicker patch (which is what would happen with any mower) but otherwise none at all. It cuts very well. I will be doing a thicker area, as well as cutting my lawn, with it this weekend. Cheers !

I have a B2650 and want to buy a flail mower.Looking at the beco 64 inch or the del morino 52 boom mount or 62 funny flail mower with the tilt option.I was copairing mowers because some say that it is hard to get parts for the equipment made in China.Also the beco is quite heavy comared to the del morino.Also I have not seen a hydraulic top link on your tractor yet.

thats one thing i didn't like about the Hydro tranny. you always have to run the rpms up..n the crap out of it to do work. I have the gear drive on my 2015 and I only need 1800 rpm to run my implements..and do the same work as the hydro running at 3500 rpm's. Saves a pile on fuel cost.

You see to be doing fine with the lower horsepower tractor. In your opinion would a flair mower be appropriate for a Kubota L 2501? Seems the stats require 30 plus hp as listed in Land Pride documents.

Good day Bill. The flail mower here is one from Farmer Equipment Sales (dot com) here in Canada. They have different sizes and different PTO HP ranges. This 48" worked great for my 19.6 HP PTO. (it is rated for 16-30 PTO HP). This flail would certainly be great for an L series. Cheers and good luck!

Good day Dean. I like my FM too but this flail mower is definitely in my view, better suited for these kinds of things. I am going to try cutting my front lawn with it next week. I am just letting the grass grow a little longer before i mow it. It is gear driven from the PTO but then has 3 belts that transfer the energy from the gear box to the rotor underneath. Hi Dennis. I never took anything down that tall but I did a few other videos with it and I think the largest diameter sapling i tried was just under 2" I think. It is rated to take down up to 3".

From my limited understanding and total lack of knowledge, I think I understand the knifes are more suited to grass and the hammers for rougher growth. Not sure what is in place if anything to replace the stump jumper you fond on a rotary cutter. Waiting for the video!

My cousin has a Woodmax FM-54 (54" wide) on a little Kubota BX2370. She lives in Wisconsin and this is the first summer she has been using it. She has the hammer blades (they do have a cutting edge on them) on it and mowers fields AND her lawn. Does it do as good of a job as a finish mower? Of course not. But it does a passable job keeping her lawn looking like a lawn and not a field. I don't think you'd want to change out between knives and hammer blades. That would get REAL old REAL fast! ;)

Dave Smith I would think that for my purposes I would only need the hammers 2-3 times a year for rough cutting. But again I am not sure what it would like with the lawn cut with the hammers. I have cut grass with my rotary cutter (what I grew up calling a bush hog) and I was not impressed. Again no experience with a fail mower.

Looking at buying a mower in spring one question when cutting small brush does it leave little stumps that can puncture atv tires ?

Good day Dale. It didn't for me but I had it set really low too. (You will see in one of the videos). But I could see that if you had the height set high on it , that you would get a corresponding stump on the saplings, so guess so long as you set the height of it low when needed, then it would minimize the height of any remaining stumps. Good morning Dennis. I can't answer that to be honest. I have used a belly mower, a finish mower and now a flail mower, but I don't have any experience on brush hogs yet. I can certainly see that the flail mower cuts some pretty big sized woody material and leaves a clean mulch below it. And it seems to me that each of them are designed for certain capacities and types of cuts or materials that they can cut. Perhaps I will get a chance to test out a brush hog at some point. GP Outdoors one big difference that I see (no personal experience with a fail mower) is that the fail mower dies not have the traditional ‘stump jumper’ capability. Now the small 1.5” or less is probably not an issue, but I see a 4”+ stump recking havoc on the fail mower, I have personally gone over bigger stumps ‘bush hogging’.

Totally unrelated......what length is your HLA grapple and how much did it cost ( roughly)??? I just bought 168 acres in Ontario and besides needing another kubota.....watching you use the grapple has made my wife want one.....but she’s concerned about the cost. The Landpride version looks weaker and it’s over $2000!!!! I assume the HLA must cost more???

The 60" HLA Light Duty Root Rake Grapple cost me about 2.4k from the Kubota dealer here in Ontario. I think this is what GP has as well. You do have to have the 3rd function valve kit which was close to 1k for my B2650. This thing has been awesome in our rocky terrain and much better than the Landpride offering! If you google the HLA Price List you should find PDFs with the MSRP.

I honestly don't remember what it cost as the invoice was not split but it was in or around the price of the Landpride or thereabouts, I believe. Weighs a lot more than the landpride so of course would affect capacity but so far, for my needs, I am still able to lift what I need to. Congratulations to you and your wife on the new land!! Just a quick update,GP. Just ordered the new tractor, also had them order the grapple as well.....supposed to be 3 weeks for the grapple. The tractor should be here this coming Friday or possibly next Monday. They are even throwing in a keyed kill switch, that disables the tractor......hopefully to slow down would be thieves.

Good day Leo. It cuts the brush well and just leaves mulch behind. I know from my instructions that the rotor is balanced ( which makes sense since it is spinning with a lot of force) so needs all knives or hammers attached. Cheers and thanks for watching !

Will it really cut 3" material?

Morning Ron. the biggest saplings I mowed over were about 1 3/4" to 2 ". I never got to try it on a 3" but I did run it over a 12" stump and it chewed through it down the ground (mind you it was there for about 2 years). Mulched it right down without any trouble. Loved that flail mower. They also make them with off-set capability so you can swing them out to the sides of the tractor too. Take care!

An excellent question, Tom. I have a large lawn area in the front area of my property and in the mid-to-long term, the area of the property which has brush/thicket is the area I eventually will build my garage on. In the long term, I will only have the front lawn area that needs grooming.Which is why I bought a finish mower, and not a flail mower. I hope that helps explain it. Take good care!

@@GPOutdoors actually a flail mower can be used for weeds and as a finish mower providing you have the right blades on it. If you're using the "y" blades, it'll leave a nice cut. I used to drive with 12 feet of them for both weeds and finished cuts. 🙃🙃🙃

Hey good day TJ. That's a great question and I will include it in the next video. People have asked before a few times. The reason is for safety. That spot I was doing all the work on at this video was a neighbour's place and he and bunch of his guests were about 50 metres away from me as I was winding in and around them through that field/forest. Also, the kids along the concession know it is ok to come ATV'ing on my property and through my forests and my driveway anytime they like, so I keep the headlights and four ways going to hopefully be more visible in case they come whipping around a corner or up through the trail where I am working. Just figure a little extra visibility can't hurt. And I figure they have a better chance of seeing me before they get to me especially if they come up from behind and I don't see them while I am working or backing up. Hope that helps. I got a flail mower for my Kubota B2601 not quite a year ago - they are awesome aren't they? I should have got mine sooner. I went with the 59" Caroni TL1500 - with the "medium duty" Y blades, rather than the hammer blades. (They didn't have them in stock and wasn't sure I needed them.) Thanks for posting - when I was researching mowers for my tractor I was trying to find folks using them in real-world scenarios with the smaller Kubota and there weren't a lot of videos around then.

Thanks! That makes perfect sense......I know you need to run them on public roads and only seems responsible to run them on other people’s property. Also makes sense to run them on your own property if there are strange people on your property. I actually added a amber strobing light bar to my ROPS, which gives me a full 360° view. I only run it however, when I leave my property. Also added a 5000 lumen light bar to the front and back of my ROPS. No holes were drilled in the assembly of my light and visibility package on the ROPS. I enjoy watching your channel....Thank You, GP.

Hey all good Brad. I like the idea of the amber light bar. You never know when a neighbour will drop by down the road or the kids will come Atv'ing through so the light bar would give a better warning. On ATV's, they cannot hear the tractor before they come across me. Thanks again and all the best!
