Hi GP. I have 60 hectares of forest , after five years of neglect I spent a few weeks with a hammer flail mower cutting out 3 meter wide tracks , I re seeded with grass and now use a 1 .5m finishing mower . Very happy with these little machines . You're doing great job passing on your knowledge 🙂

Great video. GP you've sold me on the B2601. I'm down sizing and I've checked out so many small tractors that I'm cross-eyed. I'm like you I don't want to make a big path in my woods but I need a real hoss of a machine to do real utility tractor work and you've sold me. Thank you! I'm going to trade in my 1970 G950 Minneapolis Moline because I simply don't need a big row crop machine since I've sold the farm and now all I've got is 20 mostly wooded acres and I just want to have fun and that little power house will do everything I need and if there's something bigger I may need I'll just rent it and send the monster back when finished. I just watched all your recent videos with this flail mower GP, and man is that thing sweet! Really surprised at what a nice finish it leaves, it seems like it sort of rototills the top layer of ground to create a nice layer for seeding or just letting whatever is there grow back. I thought I wanteda rotary mower, but now I think I NEED a flail mower :) All I have to do now is justify the cost with the finance committee... Hey GP I've seen our Department of Highways here in the States use these. They are awesome too. Their equipment has two mowers one behind the tractor and also one mounted on the side of the tractor. The one mounted on the side is for road banks. Quite capable of mowing over top rocks,roots, stumps, and boulders. I think you are right, must be almost indestructible. 👍👍👍

I borrowed a 6ft mower from a fried I only have a L2501 and it worked great. Rpm’s stayed consistent and it was more overgrown. There great and you don’t need a big power tractor

The flail mower seems to work better than even a rotary bush hog.. wow. Do you think it would work on 4-5 inch diameter or bigger stumps? Do you think the risk would be worth taking, lol! One tough mower, that’s for sure. I’ve always sworn by King Kutter and Land Pride implements but Beco seems to be proving their worth very well. Seems like a couple more ponies under the hood might help for the thicker stuff, though 25 seemed to seem to spin that thing pretty well. Do you see yourself purchasing one of these in the future, after you have to give it back? Anyways, I gotta run, have a great week. Take care, and cheers!

I have a 6 foot bush hog mower for my L3200. It doesn't do as much as a flail mower but it was what I could afford at the time. I do use it to maintain my 2 miles of trails and 3+ acres of food plots. I hope to get a Flail mower someday for clearing. thanks for the video.

Great video, thanks for the information. I've never used a flail mower before but it looks almost like a mini-forestry mulching head. Incredible. Seems to have a bit of trouble with going through low spots or changes in elevation. Awesome for gentle slopes or flat ground though. Thanks!

Before you take it back can you show us a video of what the hammers/knives look like? I am very interested in how they hold up. I would also love to see a close up of the ground after you cut it. I am in the market for a flail mower and being able to see close ups would be a huge help to me.

Rocks will ding up the cutting edge of the Hammers a lot.... using knives is more forgiving IMO.... but in rock gardens I would stay with a bush hog. I too wanted to see the hammers after GP ran over a few rocks in this Vid and I know with my Woodmaxx the hammers cutting edge is not liking rocks...consider the rotating mass of the hammer slamming into a rock on it's thin cutting edge and you get the picture...yes it gives being a flail but still messes up the edge

bkrgi I realize that rocks will ding the edges, it is just the cost of business. Knives break after hitting rocks and then you have to stop and replace them, that is time consuming and expensive as well. A bush hog will not cut close enough to the ground. I have looked at the woodmaxx, how do you like it?

I like the Woodmaxx but I would not consider using it in rock gardens....but at the same time in your case it just may be the cost of doing business to get the results you need....at that point it is finding hammers that are better at taking abuse which maybe asking over at tractorbynet flail thread...and seeing what the hammers look like on the Beco now....on my Woodmaxx it curled the cutting edge up on the one hammer after hitting a rock so constantly clipping rocks is going to roll the edge

Important note ----- There are two types of cutters that you can put on a flail mower 1) hammers which are designed to act like a chipper shredder for heavy cutting of brush, and 2) Knives which are designed more for cutting grass. The Knives will cut some brush but not as well as the hammers and the hammers sometimes get tngled up with grass.

It's been good for my needs so far and works well on removing rocks from the ground - there are many videos on my channel where I use the grapple and remove and lift rocks - if you are interested, take a look through. On stumps, it is not so good. Without a backhoe, it does not have enough power to dig out stumps very well, at least in my short experience with it on my property. Hope that helps and all the best!

When would you choose this vs a brush hog and vice versa? It looks much more compact than a brush hog and seems to do a great job. Also, do you always have to raise it when going in reverse? Thanks for the video!

I have never had a rotary (bush hog) but I know that the flail will cut nicer than a rotary by design. The main difference I think is that the flail can also be used to cut your lawn and as you will see in another video, it does a pretty decent job of it whereas the bush hog is not designed to give a nice or clean cut. So if I had mainly fields or areas where i am just trying to cut brush etc then a bush hit might be better but If I had property with both fields/brushy areas and also a front lawn, then a flail for sure. And yes, you are not supposed to cut when driving backwards (because of the direction of the rotor spins)Hope that helps.

LOL! You got it covered. In my case, I don't really have a lot of areas that won't be grass in the future (the big clearing is where my garage will be one day) so for my needs here, I would choose the finish mower again. However, if you have areas that have brush or grassy trails or areas that have thicket, as well as a nice lawn area, I would choose the flail for sure, every time. I would take the hammers because they do it all. Another thing I liked about the flail when mowing grass/lawn, is that it kind of gives the lawn a golf course look because it has that big heavy roller on the back so it's like you stripe the lawn, which was pretty cool and the hammers did a good cut on the lawn (not as crisp as my finish) or as good as the knives ( i understand) but certainly was a good cut. Good morning and thanks Bob! It was a really nice piece of equipment to get to learn how to use. No problem with the stringy stuff but the directions said not to cut backwards through the brush because it might wrap around the tube. So I would always lift a bit when backing up and then drop it again. LOL on the skid plate - still thinking about it - I have good clearance under the B and am always alert to the ground I travel over - so far all good. Thanks - all the best!

Great video! I have a brand new WoodMaxx with the hammer flails that I’ve yet to use - thanks for the encouragement😁. I may have missed whether you are using the hammers or fine finish flails. Probably a dumb question, but couldn't you keep it running raised up as you back in too? Just figuring it would knock down some heavier saplings as you back in before dropping it down. Or doesn't a PTO keep going backing up or raised?

Morning KS. Not a bad question at all. The PTO continues whether I drive forward or backwards however the flail mower has hammers hanging from a rotor that spins and throws the hammers in a forward motion. Backing up while it is down is not going to hurt it, but it is not designed to cut driving backwards so the manual suggests that you cut forward with it. @@GPOutdoors Yup makes sense, all I know about tractors is from reading and videos so just sorting out a lot of basic info before I buy one. Landed on you looking at a flail vs rotary cutter and I really like the mulched fine finish of the flail and I have nasty brush and sapling undergrowth to cut with it. Nothing worse than what you were cutting as an expectation for it.

Good morning Bill. I don't have it anymore but I have to say those hammers take a beating. I did a video shortly after this one where i lifted the flail mower up so we could see the condition of the hammers etc after walking a lot of rocks. That's great Bill. If I may offer, extending the upper link arm adjusts the mower to rest back on the roller and the bottom "skid" shoes are adjustable to also aid in getting the right height. One of the benefits I liked was that when your lawn is green and healthy, you will get a golf course striped effect on the lawn - looks great!

Hey Rob! Thanks ! No , with this kind of mower, you can not mow backwards. This is why you see I always lift it while I am backing up and then drop it again before I mow forward. But man, it cuts anything in it's path. Nice. Thanks for watching. Have a good one!! Cheers!

Morning Glenn. The directions and the dealer suggested not to cut backwards with it so I lift it up when backing up. The reason is because the rotor is spinning one way. Thanks!

Morning Ricky. I wish i could offer an opinion but i have never run a rotary. I have learned that the flail cuts more evenly than a rotary- it is more of a rougher cut. Sorry I could not help much. Good luck!

As impressive as that flail mower is... and it is, I am very concerned about your HST fan. I understand that the BX had a lot of problems of debris shattering the plastic fan blades. I don't know if your B series is of a similar design or not but perhaps you should see if you'd need a skid plate.

I use it for breaking pruned cherry branches in my orchard , flail mowers with hammer blades are very good for heavy duty work around the farm they can break thick branches with no problem. Stronger the tractor the better the mower works.

Morning Simon. I do. The rear roller has adjustable height settings and the upper control arm will help set the height as well. When you drop it to the ground, it runs on the rear roller and will follow the contours of the ground. Hope that helps. Cheers!
