New reports say that airplanes flying over Europe have been facing GPS issues over the last few months. From August last year, 46,000 flights going over eastern Europe have faced GPS problems. The finger is being pointed at Russia. Moscow is accused of targeting civil aviation. But is that really the case? When looking at the data, it seems that Moscow is scrambling GPS services over its own territory, and entry points into Russia. Jamming GPS signals could help Russia defend against attacks by Ukrainian drones. Russia isn't the only country to scramble GPS services for defensive purposes. And Russia also has an ace up its sleeve when it comes to satellite navigation services. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Its is the US Military THAAD system that is jamming the airwaves in Europe. THAADs are deployed in Poland, Italy and other Eastern Block countries. US did the same thing in South Korea and Japan. Not a surprise.

Because the USA taught 'everyone' that Russia (starting from USSR) is evil. Because USA was frightened (as was UK etc.) of communism. Because they simplistically thought/think communism means taking all the money away from all the rich people. And people even with nothing more than a house or something - maybe a couple of houses, you know - thought they might lose those 'riches'. Ironically there's as many mega rich in Russia as anywhere else, maybe more. Doubly ironically ( or maybe the reason ) Russia isn't communist any more. Triply ironically no one in a western democracy owns their house anyway.. if you don't pay the rates you lose it, they'll sell you up. But those are facts. You know? Truths? There's no place for facts and truths in the popular mind today. Which ain't so bad. If the peasants (excuse me, no offence meant, poetic licence) want to live like that then okay. No they can’t. Bill Clinton got rid of that capability back in 2000. He was trying to convince the Europeans not to start their own system. Europeans use Galileo GDS and not GPS. Once you can jam one it is not hard to jam others. The presenter likely doesn’t understand the science.

What we see in the "unsecurity" in the GPS syst, are most probably the effect of two things. First the "olding" of the gps systems connected to the computorsystems and the old satellites. The second is the "trixing" and "education" of and on the gps systems, by the US and NATO-OTAN during the escallations period since 2018. Escallating extreamly much since the autumn of 2021. All these training and "cooperative military excerzieses" in europe snd esp the nothern and east baltic regions have created a massive amounts on the security and accuracy of and from the gps, and partly also on the Galileo systems. These "exercises" from the US and the Nato can be evaluated, now in heinsite, to hav been one of the factors, that led the russian leadership, to deside to go in to "secure its borders, and the slavic populations" of east ucraine, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the Crimean part of the Russian fedration. And also in heinsite. This was probably the reson behind the "US escalatory politics", as a way to slow down and weaken the EU and the european integrations. US gouv as admin, realiced the industrial and financial benefits that the european copying of the american cooperations organs and systems, will have for europe and us europeans. So "slow them down". "Bleed them dry". Refocus the europeans efforts". Was the stupid american "short time solution" that concurred for at least a while in the US "leading stratas". Now when they and others see the consequenses of this "unhappy decissions" have on the US and the americans societal situations, many, yes probably the outmost majority, they realiced that they should have taken an other path.

This jamming is not new here in Norway as we share border with Russia. It is not a problem. We lose GPS but have other means of navigation. Also air confrontation has become routine here. We have Russian fighter jets regularly on our border. Also routine. Not a big problem. Been like this since U.S.S.R

Yes implicit the countries we share border with also share border with us. That is a correct assumption. However their Glonass GPS system is not implemented in all western aeroplanes. So jamming could possibly be avoided for that system in their lanes. Anyway, it is not a problem and that jamming is mostly to jam any possible China/USA low end drones to hinder espionage.

I hope the U.S. kept it's 100% reliable LORAN-C system in mothballs and ready to be put back in service if/when needed. I can only hope that a large cache of receivers were saved as well. In a hot war, it will be the only thing we can trust. Back when I used to fly privately, I had a LORAN-C receiver and could fly anywhere in the U.S. Along the coasts, LORAN reaches out for hundreds of miles and was effective for maritime and aviation navigation. Because LORAN was made originally for maritime shipping, there was a mid-continent coverage gap. When LORAN-C came along and the receiver sets became small and light for airplane use, that gap was finally bridged. Albeit a few years before GPS came along. If GPS is compromised, we can always go back (I hope).

Russia is certainly jamming GPS over eastern Ukraine, but is unlikely any land based jammer placed could reach beyond Ukraine. Now since Russia must jam GPS around constantly attacked Crimea, it is possible Black sea area might have problems. Use better satellite navigators, which can catch signals from other satellites.

Who is hindering the Ukrainians to buy Glonass receiver and use this system for their drones to attack on Russian soil? It's a one way connection and there is no possibility to control who is using the system.

Glonass is also blocked when you come close to an important military facility or a silo, when you enter a big city there are spots on the highway where no navigation system is functioning at all, it usually ends within 5-15km.
