I hate coil whine. And there is no just no permanent fix for it. You would have to physically desolder every inductor in the VRM on the Graphics Card and replace them with higher quality ones. My old Vega 56 Strix literally screams at very high FPS and 100% load. You know what is really funny: Different games produce different noises and different graphics settings also affect the noise. I could record the sound and analyze what my GPU is doing based on the sound haha
@AncientGameplays4 жыл бұрын

If you lock your framerate to your monitor's refresh rate, it can mitigate some coil whine. Typically coil whine is at it's worst when the framerates are completely insane, which usually is on menu or loading screens. Those 300 ish FPS on loading screens makes some cards SCREEEECH. If you can't get out of your PSU try locking frames down in Afterburner or Wattman.

I agree with you to great extent, but you didn`t mention few aspects ;) Great material though! 1. Not everyone would be able to hear the coil whine. If your hear lots of higher frequency sounds (like myself) you`ll be distracted most of the time if there`s any whine, even if there`s not much. I`ve been torturing myself with a GTX 770 back in the days - these were quite power hungry and even using a decent psu wouldn`t help. Had to sell it while the constant headache wasn`t doing me any good ;) Back to the point - if you know you don`t hear much of high freq, you can skip looking for a better PSU while you won`t hear anything. If you hear a lot of it - it`s possible the PSU change won`t cut it -> then on to next point.. 2. The coil whine differs greatly between the cards. It depends on the power delivery (both gpu-side and psu-side), while smoothening the current is key (that`s why the example of connecting two power cables was nice). If you experience lots of power spikes then you`ll probably hear the coil whine as well. However, the quality of the coils, capacitors and other elements are also significant. That`s why changing the card itself is a step you`ll probably have to take if you hear a lot of whine having quality psu. Of course I`m talking warranty cards - if they don`t have it, you can put some non conductive silicone over the coils - they won`t have as much space to resonate hence the sound frequency will be more acceptable. That`s an oldschool tip but works surprisingly well - though I haven`t used this solution for a few years. 3. Also having the card connected through a low quality extender cable won`t do any good for the power delivery. The PCI-E slot can provide 75 W of power (if I recall correctly) and it will use it in any mid to high end card. Again - if the current is not smooth and there are some spikes there`s a greater chance of whining. 4. In most cases you can eliminate the whine by using v-sync or fps cap. I don`t think many people are using this method nowadays, but it`s a possiblity. 5. Some games are generating lots of whine from the card even though you`re not using max power of the gpu. Had this problem with GTX 770/970 in CS:GO - even though I was using 30-40% of GPU power (low resolution, low details - I was CPU bound) and limited my fps to something like 240 (max in-game fps was about 400) the problem would still exist. Probably it`s due to the implementation of the source engine ;) Probably got some more but wanted to mention a few. Hope anyone would get something from it ;)

Just found this vid as I was dealing with this problem just now, so here's some info from my side for anyone interested: Got the MSI MPG A850GF a while back and the AORUS RX 6800 XT MASTER recently, and ran it with only 1 daisy chained PCI-E until now. The coil whine was really noticeable, even through headphones with thick foam. Of course, increasing the FPS cap beyond the monitor's refresh rate (144) increases the coil whine, i.e. the higher the FPS the noisier the whine. Since the PSU is multi-rail, I found info from other people that state it's better to use two separate PCI-E cables instead of a single daisy chained one. The only scenario where you are forced to use a single PCI-E cable is if you have a single-rail PSU. After adding another PCI-E cable and doing some heavy testing, the temps are a bit lower while the power draw remains the same, though I've also changed to the "Balanced" power plan. However, I now reach a bit lower GPU clock speed (~55mhz), but it feels more consistent and stable in game. I'll probably test this even further with power limit and/or undervolting, which will be interesting.

My pc has an older Fractal Design 1000W PSU, and it was making too much noise and I wanted to change it out for a while. So I bought a new RM650 PSU and installed it in my PC. I was pleasantly surprised how much the fan noise of my pc had gotten from changing the PSU, but even more surprised when running my first game. The coil whine is GONE..... Like so quiet now that I have to run a stress test, open the case and put my ear right next to the card to hear any coil whine at all. And even then it's mostly overshadowed by the fan noise. I was blown away and can now enjoy gaming with no distracting noise from the PC :D A good PSU can really make a difference...

Small update on this regard from my testing, at the moment no matter the GPU (AMD or NVidia) it's a lottery, first you have to determine which component is the coil whine starter. And from my experience my card is almost silent. In my ranking SS and Corsair are on the silent side with almost no to no coil whine. BeQuiet was the worst but there seems to be with the first charge of PSU, because there are a lot of complaints about whining and screaming under load. Oh and btw, 80+ rating didn't matter between the titanium and gold rating, because there was no difference in noise whatsoever. If not for the retarded cheap a.. fan (bearing noise...) in those PSU I would've stuck with them, but now it's a Corsair PSU Gold instead of a plat. But for now the result matters, even tho I wished there wasn't this aweful testing and checking involved. I rate this 2/10 user friendly.

Yeap, one thing is the efficiency and another one is the parts used in the PSU (caps for example). Corsair rm series have 100% japonese caps which are way better than the usual ones, and the filters are also better, hence the results
@NinO127523 жыл бұрын
@@AncientGameplays indeed, fun fact a lot of them are claiming for Japanese 100% caps, but I feel like the QC on some PSU are lacking. Maybe some real world testing would get them closer to the point where they might figure faulty parts. I mean a test 30 or rx6000 and some load is not that much to ask for. But nonetheless after a lot of money spent in transit I can say I'm happy with the result. Maybe not 100% gone but at a point where I would say it's fine. And I'm very sensible for this kind of stuff. ;)

its not a mix, sometimes a video card has it or psu , in my case only my gpu has it, but yes can happened to have both psu and gpu, coil whine refers to an undesirable noise emitted by an electronic component vibrating as power runs through an electrical cable.
@claritoresdiano10214 жыл бұрын
You're right. We can reduce the vibrations ~ Use a separate power pin cable. ~ Try dampening your case or moving the case direction. ~ Putting thermal pads over inductors coils/chokes and pressing them with heatsink, water block, or something else.

I have a 6800xt paired with a Corsair AX 760 platinum, the card had crazy coil whine since day one. A lot of people suggested to try some 24/7 stress tests in order to eliminate it but did not work. The extreme coil whine occured when i overclocked it at 2700mhz with an undervolt of 1000mV. At 2700Hz my card is consuming 280-300Watt.. After that i turned into Silent Bios but still i had coil whine as well but this time less. So what i did to decrease it to about 50% was: 1) Undervolt it at arround 1000mV 2) Core clock between 2400Hz 3) Enabled vertical sync so my card is not working at 100% so i have 144 fps for a 144hz Monitor (so the power draw is lower ) PS: When i had the same PSU paired with a GTX 1080 ti Aorus Xtreme 11G i had 0 coil whine. This 6800xt is whining like crazy since day one and i see a lot of people have the same problem with 6000 series.
@AncientGameplays3 жыл бұрын
1) Undervolting = less voltage = less power draw 2) Core clock decrease = Less power draw 3) Less power draw again Basically that board from the brand you got (GPU PCB) isn't that great, and when you exceed a certain amount of power draw, the capacitors and VRMs go crazy
