Great idea for low humidity areas. The problems i can see is that grow tents are designed to maintain an adjusted atmosphere so any atmospheric condition not controlled (humidity in this case) can become compounded quickly. A failed intake fan or clogged vent can mean rapid temp raising and a shut down of your rigs or worse. Great idea if you have the money to run a dehumidifier inside the tent or have redundant systems independently operating like fan intakes on separate power supplies, etc.

Idk your whole setup but it looks like you're sucking all of your conditioned air from your basement and sending it outside after it gets heated. You really need an air intake from outside. Otherwise you are using the air your AC unit cooled and sending it outside which means your house is under negative pressure and pulling in warm air from outside through all the little openings. Kind of like a bigger version of your grow tent, tentception. Basically its making your AC unit work extra hard to not only cool your house but also all the air it is sucking in because you're sending all the air it just cooled across your cards and back outside. That duct fan has a lot of air flow so i wouldnt be surprised if your electric bill skyrocketed during summer. If you use an intake from outside the air coming in will be like 70-80F most days depending on where you live, which is plenty low to keep the cards cool and in turn, reduce your electric bill.
@RedFoxCrypto3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve thought about this. I’d need to put some filters in place to filter the outside air getting pulled in to prevent pollen and insects from getting into the tent. My basement is unfinished so it’s not technically a conditioned space. I have no AC vents opening into my basement. I’ve also thought about the idea of moving the whole setup into my unconditioned garage but then I need to figure out filtering out all the sawdust I create when working in there. Thanks for the comment buddy.
@Iridium2393 жыл бұрын
@@RedFoxCrypto All the air its blowing out that vent has to come from somewhere. My first guess would be to check the door leading to the basement if you dont have vents down there and second would be small gaps in you ductwork. I've got a bug screen over my vent and a cheap furnace filter from lowes covering the hole on the inside of my garage.

Negatively pressuring a house could lead to dangerous CO back drafts with gas appliances. If the exhaust from a gas hot water heater is continuously sucked back into a house from negative air pressure,, deadly CO could build up inside the house with fatal consequences.

@@Iridium239 Quick question, I just received my grow tent and I want to pull intake air from outside. My question is where I live it's not only hot, but super humid. Is the humidity a concern when pulling in air from the outside into the grow tent? I don't want any condensation on the cards. I know the hot air coming off the cards is dry, but is that enough to offset the humidity coming in?
@Yodaandhislightsabre3 жыл бұрын
@@pinaycollectibles3074 I don't know. If I was doing it, I would do a test, try one card and see if it works without condensation build up, then test with another card, then another, etc. I might be inclined to use a conformal coating if condensation is a problem right off the bat. Or run a dehumidifier. Good luck!

I've been running my rigs in the garage with a 8" AC infinity fan which pulls in air from the outside through a garage window. but exhausting out with a reducer to 6" because that was just the size of the hole I had made. That way I don't mess with any of the air in the house. Gets over 100 degrees in even mild temps, but it's easy to just open the door to the house for free heat in the winter or open the garage door when I'm home to let it vent out naturally. I just recently got a grow tent and put 4 rigs in there and tried running the heat out, but it seems like there isn't enough air flow because it gets close to 120 degrees inside the tent on maybe a 80 degree day although the garage is cooler. I ended up removing the tent because it didn't seem like it was better, but I still have it. I didn't use ducts on the bottom like you did though, I just opened the bottom flaps. Do you think that would make a difference by ducting air higher up like that over the rigs? I'm not sure if I need a better way to get air in the tent more efficiently or I need to get the exhaust opening up to 8". It just seems like the rigs all run hotter in the tent which causes them to slow down a little.

Don't use this in a humid climate unless you don't mind an additional $70--100 a month in dehumidifier and a/c costs. I dedicated a room in the house with a window unit (not everyone has this i understand) because constant 80% humidity in my climate.

@@rscalliwag07 very similar issue I have I have dedicated an unused outdoor bathroom but I cannot have the door open of the humidity rises drastically in the room. I'm lost on what to do to help with getting cool air without ac.. Maybe a filtered tent?
@rscalliwag073 жыл бұрын
A lot is going to depend on the insulation of the outdoor room. Increasing insulation will decrease how hard climate control has to work, thus decreasing cost of operation. My climate is roughly 90f high ambient temps at 80-90% humidity, on a coast line with high salinity in the air. If this is similar at all to your climate you are going to need a/c to exchange hot air for cool air and a dehumidifier(depending on insulation). You can get window units that have dehumidification built in. I'd personally never put my miners outside of an air controlled building without a massive dehumidifier in my climate. If temps are less for you but still high humidity, you can get away with a dehumidifier only but depending on type you may have to modify the water tank to dump outside or be required to constantly empty it.
@rscalliwag073 жыл бұрын
If buying a window unit/dehumidifier isn't a problem but cost of operation is, consider building or buying a solar generator. Something with just a few more kw/h then the unit draws.

Thinking of doing this on a smaller scale with just 4 cards, found a decent sized grow tent as limited on space in my bedroom (Which is where I can keep an eye on it plus out the way) Plan is to have a small rig with twin 140mm fans sat on a 5 fan laptop cooler all inside the grow tent, then can connect a vent pipe to feed out my window with mesh cover to help with less dust. Which is why I looked in to a tent so to keep the cards in good working order for a lot longer than in a open air rig because of dust and other small things that could get sucked in to the cards fans/heatsinks. Have a air blower to clear out dust build up in the tent as well as the case I will house all the main parts ie mobo, psu and a 1 gpu. Thanks for the idea and will let you know how it goes for temps for those thinking of doing the same.

Great setup. Don't want to sound like negative nelly here but it looks like you are now creating negative pressure in your house. If you have a natural gas furnace and or hot water heater, the negative pressure will cause your chimneys to back flow into the house. Carbon monoxide from pilot lights or even the furnace coming on to heat the house at night will flood your basement causing a death zone. I hope this is something you have thought about and at least get a co detector down there so you will know if shit is going south.
@leol64063 жыл бұрын
Of course if you are running very high efficiency gas appliances, they usually don't have a chimney stack and also have air intake and exhaust so it's a sealed unit which i don't think would be affected by the negative pressure in the house. Still to be safe I would put up a couple of co detectors to be safe.

These are all excellent points. I do have a high-efficiency furnace and high-efficiency tankless water heater in the basement. Oh and I do have a CO2 and smoke alarm detector not far from the whole set up in the basement. Thanks for looking out brother stay safe and happy mining.
