I watch quite a few repair youtubers who call themselves electronics engineers/technicians. Most of them have some basic knowledge but usually just swap IC's or voltage inject and replace hot components. Your channel is so much more than that. A proper old school engineer that works things out and explains how to diagnose with theory and fundamentals. Keep up the good work mate. BTW €45 no fix no fee is an unbelievable deal!

I have to buy an osciloscope. My GPU shut down while browsing and nothing powered up anymore. I've received it from warranty, (after 2 months) they said that they replaced 2 mosfets and mosfet drivers (I think they meant the doublers) and now driver crashes on full load, on everyting that exceeds 140W, before was working around 200w. It works only if I underclock it. I suspect 2 or more phases don't work. Thank you so much for this video!
@vgatec52092 жыл бұрын
So the BIOS communicates with the GPU, and the GPU communicates with the PWM (VID/PSI?) about the number of phases to trigger? I didn't know that the BIOS could affect the functioning of the vcore phases. Great video! If you could record another video talking about the ripple analysis of the VRM phases, that would be great.

At 30:28 in the readout of llspci where you get the address for the graphics card, it also states (size=256M). Later on you use 10 or 30 for the size of the memory to test. I think you should at least try the 256 megabyte. Although this does not seem to be the entire memory of the card, maybe it is multiplexed somehow, because in the beginning(2:51) the sticker says the card has 4GB which is 4096MB. Also, you can leave the mount command out of the list of commands. You would only need it if the files are on another USB Stick/CD/Drive and not on the bootable archiso stick.
@LearnElectronicsRepair2 жыл бұрын
Regards mount command - I am no expert on linux. Thanks for your advice Regards testing more memory - generally if you have a RAM problem on a GPU sufficiently severe to cause it to crash when the drivers load, it is going to show up pretty damn fast once you run a memory test- there is no need to test all the RAM

Hello! I have an r9 390 sapphire nitro black plate and I have the same problem or maybe a similar one, since when installing the drivers sometimes, not always, I get a black screen, either starting, in windows or playing, maybe I can use it for a few hours running and suddenly the black screen returns. The temperatures are low, between 54° to 62°. I kept the original BIOS and tried to download from techpowerup the BIOS that shows that GPU (HINYX memory) so I left both BIOS for different switches, I tried but unfortunately it didn't work. I also took the gpu board apart to clean it with isopropyl alcohol but didn't notice anything burnt or sulphated on it. Sorry for the question and if it took too long, I'm using google translate

id put a little caveat at this repair - if the bios hadnt been messed with/corrupted you might have just bandaided the issue by flashing one that has lower power limits/clocks, tho thats a general problem with flashing 'not for this exact model but seemingly working' bioses
@LearnElectronicsRepair2 жыл бұрын
It is possible mate - I used an official AMD reference bios from Techpowerup. As this is an HP OEM card I card I could not find the correct BIOS file. I guess the frame rate in the furmark test would give a good indication if the card is working properly (compared to a similar card)
@Qyngali2 жыл бұрын
@@LearnElectronicsRepair If anything the HP OEM cards has a lower limit than the reference AMD bios. I've had similar problems as this with cards running a mining bios... BTW, there's not really a need to desolder the bios, the Windows flasher works fine in most cases.
@LearnElectronicsRepair2 жыл бұрын
@@Qyngali As I mentioned in reply to the same comment elsewhere - I believe it is possible that the windows flasher could say the existing BIOS is the same version as the new one and refuse to upgrade it, but I worry it just reads the version number and not checks if the existing one is corrupted or modified. The way I did it is no hassle, takes about 10-15 mins and at least i know for sure I flashed the BIOS
@AuDiGo6 Жыл бұрын
No. I have exactly the same problem with the exactly same symptoms. And guess what - flashing bios didn't help although there are two available versions on the Techpowerup. It's probably exmining card, so problem is deeper.

The card was detected by PC, why did You solder BIOS chip to reprogram it? Flashing from PC wouldnt work?
@LearnElectronicsRepair2 жыл бұрын
I didn't totally trust the card not to crash at a crucial time, and I've seen times in the past when the BIOS 'update' tool says that the current BIOS and the new file are the same version so it will not program it. I honestly don't trust it when it says they are 'the same' because I worry that the upgrade tool just reads the version number from the existing BIOS and does not check to see if it is corrupted. Removing, programming and resoldering the BIOS took about 10 mins so it isn't any hassle at all and at least I know it is done.

45 euro is very cheap.
@LearnElectronicsRepair2 жыл бұрын
That is what I charge for this sort of repair - plus parts. BGA rework costs more. As I mentioned elsewhere I am aided by the low cost of living in the Canary Islands. For example electricity for my house (we don't have mains gas here) is €50 a month and water is €20 per quarter, so this one job pays my energy bill for a whole month or water for best part of 3 months. Diesel for the van is currently €1.42 a litre (which is very expensive for here, it's normally about 90 cents) so to help out the Canarian Government give us a 14% rebate on the displayed cost at the pump, if I put €25 euro of fuel in (pump price), I get €3.50 back in cash so I'm paying €1.24 a litre. That's £1.06 English money - and I am sure I would be paying more if I still chose to live there. To take the p!ss the British government recently knocked 5p off the fuel tax so people would realise how lovely and generous they are and vote for them next time. Oh and they will also tell you the cost of living crisis is everywhere. You are being lied to. It isn't Anyway enough politics, the price is relative to how much it costs me to live here. You could say if I'm charging the equivalent of 1 months household energy bill I'm actually over charging? 😉
