@Aritosthenes The whole package was indeed fantastic! I just felt that the last 2 minutes in particular is the cleanest singing I've ever heard on the SAI stage. The lock, ring and sync is as good as it get's in barbershop! Hopefully they'll win next year :)

No, as they switched back in the set the sound is more 'traditional' barbershop, all things being equal, but they blend together so tight its hard to pick out. I think they should continue to do so playing to their strengths & challenge the stodgy judging 'standards' which this quartet continues to destroy. Go girls!

The only explanation I could see for this set not winning the contest is that the SAI higher ups want to keep them competing so they juke the scores. And that kind of makes sense. Winning means they stop showing up and stop giving SAI content like this to post. I mean, no slight against any of the other quartets, many of them are outstanding, but this is CLEARLY the best representation of women's barbershop out there right now. It's engaging, flawlessly executed, stylistically appropriate for all the styles they cover, and modern while still being barbershop. I always hesitate to show my students women's barbershop because it will turn them off from the artform, but I'd show them this set in a heartbeat. I can't even imagine how many young ladies have been drawn into barbershop because of GQ. It's over a dozen just from my school in the six years I've been teaching here. Keep it up ladies. Just like the Boston Common, they'll have to reward it eventually, and decades from now it'll be a running joke that you won international 5 times in a row or something.

@@jenniferspeers2453 It's not the fact that it's female, that's a good thing. The problem is the usual trappings that come with Sweet Adeline culture. The same stuff lots of current members don't like; the incredibly heavy makeup, the "weird" costumes, the gestural language, often the interp, etc. A lot of the things that are done "cause that's how it's done" come across as extremely manufactured and awkward to a teenager that hasn't been around it for years. We all get used to it and see the artistry underneath. They just get a surface level glance and think it's weird. It's actually starting to get better now than 2 years ago when I wrote this comment. But if you compare it to men's quartets, where there has been a decade long push (since the late 90's) to make things look and feel more "natural" and less "barbershoppy," you'll see what I mean. Men's quartets from the 80's 90's have the same affect, it looks off-putting and weird to teenagers.

No "probably", there is no question to frame this around. As I've said elsewhere...there is no quartet with the GQ level of individual talent in one quartet. It is as simple as that. Is this their best performance? Over all, no. Aspects of it? Ok maybe. They are as good as a quartet can get, and proud to say it. They are the epitome of the goal of the entire enterprise.

A few months ago i had a random video in my suggestions for a barbershop quarter performance. I figured "these sound quite cool when i see them on tv shows" so gave it a listen. Fast forward a few months and i have a bunch of barbershop videos saved to my favourites from both mens and womens competitions and have started recognising teams and members. This is my first time listening to GQ and this set was absolutely fantastic. As a newcomer to this world i really appreciate acts that have charisma and inject personality into their performances. The songs were all great, the vocals were sublime and all four members really put their own stamp on it. Cant wait to listen to more! 🙌

GQ Vol 3 pre-ordered at the Alexandria Harmonizer show. Not only talented but all the GQ members are inspiring young women. My granddaughter will never forget one-on-one with Katie Mac before that show. Two young women (teenagers, plus their choral director) are now hooked on barbershop harmony, likely will be forever. The ladies of GQ are the best both on and off the stage.

Well.....one thing is certain, gee...maybe two things: Barbershop singing is completely foreign to you (cough) and....your premise for needing to have heard a song previously so that you can "assess" it!?!?!?... is well beyond ludicrous. Just sit back, close your eyes, take the songs for exactly what they are. Listen for matching tone, silky flow, precision of harmony, one voice from four people...not to mention the actual meaning of the words.
