But again it wasn't DMX, it was Jay-Z and Nas, because DMX fell off after the year 2000 and Nas and especially Jay-Z stayed consistent and relevant.

Jay-Z didn't really become a household name in hip hop until 1998 which was when his most commercially successful album Hard Knock Life came out. Nas was well-known, but wasn't commercially successful until 1996's "it was written." DMX was kind of like 50 Cent around the time he came out, there was a huge hype around him but then after the hype died down so did his career.
