In fact, I kinda want more shows to take this approach.

The fact that a large chunk of this anime seemed to be parody on other anime forms, with actual interesting characters, and a plot that always seems to be on track while never revealing too much, makes this one of my favorite animes. I liked the pacing in that it really made you feel like you were in school, and there was nothing to do, and though a conflict arose in every episode, it never felt repetitive, and you never felt sick of it. I think that's also what made the Endless Eight brilliant, so you felt it was an eternity long as well. In my eyes, it HAD to he insufferable to do its job, just like they HAD to make boring episodes or episodes that got off the ground slowly for realism and pace. The idea to make Kyon lead, as he's similar to the stereotypical secondary, "normal" sarcastic character that everyone favors over the real lead (a la Sokka in A:TLA or Ron in Harry Potter), was a fantastic choice. He's a lead that I think people could easily favor over the rest of the cast. And the rest of the characters, while parodies on their own medium, are great! Interesting! Flawed but lovely. It comes out a ton in Disappearance, too. The high school drama mixed with Haruhi drama mixed with the obvious jokes this show makes allows it to seal a spot for me at the top of my list. Most of the episodes has you dissecting characters and plot... and that's what makes it interesting, for me. The release order gives me a very HIMYM vibe. It matches the tone of this show. Try it out!

I'm willing to bet it's Okabe that my friend was talking about because recently I started reading the manga (because I miss it) and did some rewatching on some episodes (because fuck you, I love this series). Okabe was the teacher that stopped Haruhi and Mikuru from handing out their flyers for the SOS Brigade while wearing bunny outfits so I guess that makes him their supervisor (?) My biggest gripe with this series was the Endless Eight episodes. Watching the same episode eight times in a row was too much. I realize that each one had slight differences, but they were never big/important enough to make the episode worth watching. The least that they could have done was to change the second half of each episode to show the different ways the group tries to break the loop after discovering they're in one, but they don't even do that. The only differences between the episodes are insignificant things like what clothes the characters are wearing, or the exact words that come out of their mouths (even though the overall meaning is the same), or characters will take their actions at slightly different parts of the conversations they're having. Ultimately, none of these differences has any bearing on the story. To anyone who hasn't seen the series yet: my advice is to just watch the first, second, and last Endless Eight episodes. You see everything you need to, and won't miss anything important.

i don't understand why this anime got so popular, in my opinion its good, but far from great. the overall concept of the series is amazing: "your friend is unknowingly god and to ensure the stability of the universe you have to keep them satisfied with their mundane life without letting them find out they're god". the premise was bursting with potential that i just feel the series didn't embrace or explore fully. instead it feels like they made an underwhelming attempt to deliver on the original concept and then to make it seem more interesting they aired it out of chronological order, which actually worked to a certain extent, but i was left feeling a little disappointed. and then season 2 didn't really add much off anything at all to the whole experience. the movie was much better though.

same, i enjoyed it for what it was but i dont think its more then a decent SoL anime. The story was a little all over the place for me, sometimes they would focus on the supernatural element of the show but switched back to a goofy episode about them forming a baseball team or whatever the next episode. They could have done a lot more with the premise, but i still think its a good anime. The movie is on a whole other level however, really loved it.

Its hard to look at this show in much of a positive light since it has paved the way for most of the moe and slice of life school shows that have been over saturating the medium today.
@Appledash9910 жыл бұрын
Yes there are plenty of shows that came out in the wake of the moe awakening that were amazing like Tatami Galaxy, Gurren Lagann, NHK, and many others. But as you had said "They weren't badly written, but rather written in a simple way" , most of those moe shows that followed Haruhi, K-on, and Lucky star were just that, simple stories. there's nothing particularly wrong with simple stories here or there but when most of the show that come out and selling are just cute girls being cute what does that say to the guys who are making money off of this. If they see that its so easy to make money off of it then they wont want to take risk and do interesting things. The medium wont evolve it will stay stagnant. The main problem here isn't really even Moe. Moe is really just a genre just like mecha or sci-fi.

what irritated me is whenever anything deep in the story is about to happen it's alluded to then dropped instantly. Like when Mikuru suggests that Haruhi is not a God but a catalyst for weirdness, Itski then talks about a bloody battle raging behind the scenes and the *poof* nothing.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is the anime with the biggest influence and impact for the future of anime in the last decade at least or more. It started the crazy light novel adaption boom that we saw in anime the last few years. This anime changed Kyoani and made them to what they are today. I actually saw the anime in broadcast order - because I already watched anime as they aired from 2000 - not much choice there to do it in any other way. It is a masterpiece.
@TheEastunder11 жыл бұрын
Nah, i'd say that the anime that's had the biggest impact in the last decade would be FMA(2003). It gave Studio BONES the massive fortune it needed to release some of the most popular shows out there, it spawned a remake that many praise as the creme de la creme of anime, though i myself find it to be overrated, and other battle shounen anime have been trying ridiculously hard to take it's place like Hunter X Hunter and you can even tell just how much Attack on Titan takes from FMA.

***** I just can't, mate... I live in fear that the ending will not satisfy me at all. I love the characters, i love the platonic relationship between Haruhi and Kyon... and because of that love I can't read the novels without knowing what am I getting into. I just recently was disappointed in a manga that I read for 3 whole years and it was one of the worst feelings ever. Please tell me the truth....

7:51 I just gave 'Someday in the Rain' a go and like 2 minutes of 23ish was continuous awkward silence before the pacing of the episode returned with Kyon returning with the heater, talking to 2 people, falling asleep, then for Haruhi to wake him up and then to both walk home in the rain, sharing an umbrella

Am I the only one who didn't mind the endless eight? It wasn't lazy since Kyoto Animation reanimated different angles and shots and even some of the dialog was worded differently. As well, I felt it as more of a experience. It made me get more into the story and feel the emotions that the characters, especially Yuki, felt. It felt so good when it finally ended. That to me, was an experience that I was glad I experienced.

Thank you Arkada for reviewing this anime. It has been thrill to watch this show and (with the exception of episode 00) your advice on this show was just enough to for me to understand it without spoiling it. I'm glad I subscribed to your channel. Cheers mate!

Entraya Korsbakke On the live stream he said he's going to make one or is in the process of making one. Also Arkada and Gigguk are friends and do Podtaku together, so yeah they're definitely both awesome :P

1Eilatan not to dis Gigguk, but I never really gt into his style. He's a good reviewer, I can tell that; I wont lie, you don't get that fanbase without being good. But I just never felt like he was the person for me. Why? I don't know, some of it is that he comes across as higher-than-thou (while I think Arkada comes across as being more of you buddy telling you about an anime) , or he says things like: the best anime has already been made. but I can always try again, maybe not all his videos will make me think: die you UK jerk with an extreme case of superiority complex. (not unique to Gigguk, it's how I feel about most UK/French/US people)
@Crosshill11 жыл бұрын
James Hunter It's long time since I've seen a review of his (since he has so dahm few) but i remember liking his style of humor, whereas Arkada is more technical (and also more frequent). While i disagree with how you perceive him, i can see where it comes from, and why some might find it annoying

Amazing video. I prefer Kyon Orde, but otherwise I agree with everything else. Subbed! Definitely subbed! I'd give it a 9 or 10 though :P Edit: Just so it's clear, I'm referring to subbing to Glass Reflection, not my viewing preferences.

I'm just rewatching this video today, the video which I suspect was probably what made me watch the show, the movie for which was the first anime dvd I ever bought. Anyway, i'm just now realising how much you've inspired me creatively. In one of my last videos, I seperated my points in to four segments, like 'worlds', 'characters', stuff like that. I didn't even really think about why I would specifically choose to seperate topics of design using transition frames with topic headers on them. I come back to watch some old grarkada videos, and hey, what do you know, I think I just traced back a thread of influence that I hadn't even consciously noticed beforehand. Anyway, I know you probably won't see this. I like to post my thoughts regardless, because I just like the idea that it'll stay here, and I might stumble across my old thoughts again one day. Hope you're doing well man! Your attitude towards supporting the industry definitely inspired me to start the considerable anime collection I now own.

+Superfield Well said. And if you actually watch the anime, Haruhi actually does even more questionable things than just the blackmailing the computer by sexual harassment incident.. For example, forcing people to practice baseball with her to the point where she put bruises this other girl. Or how the group have to enable Haruhi, to the point where they have to cheat to win this hard working baseball team just to entertain this godly spoiled brat. The rest of the show is pretty much people doing regular school stuff like reading in silence(and yes, you do watch them do that, with nothing else happening), or organizing school events that are really nothing different than you doing it yourself at school. I mean if you are the type of person who just sits and does nothing you might find it interesting. As someone who actually do get involved in these activities and in a much more involved and interesting way, I don't see a point of siting on my butt to watch some fake people do it. I find Haruhi to be too abusive and narcissistic (at one point she actually explains that she is depressed because she realized she isn't a special snowflake in the world. The only thing I could think of was "Girl, you need to see a therapist if you feel that the world should revolve around you.") and the rest of the characters being too much of a enablers to enjoy this anime. If you do find the blackmailing scene disturbing, don't watch, it doesn't get any better. The plot is pretty much about how a group of people have to endure and enable an abusive teenage girl who thinks the world should revolve around her so that she won't destroy the world.

There was a time where I just seemed to keep hearing or reading stuff about this series (I think it was mostly because of all the shout-outs it got in Lucky Star), and as someone relatively new to the anime scene, I usually pick what shows to watch by what ones I keep hearing about (for example, there was a point in late 2012 where I just kept running into Cardcaptor Sakura, so I decided to give it a try). However, as I was contemplating checking it out once I finished whatever series I was watching at the time, I ran across the scene where Haruhi cons the computer club out of some of their stuff by framing them for sexual harassment. At that point, any chance of me ever watching this was shot in the head. Am I supposed to like Haruhi knowing she'd do something like that and not feel any remorse? Am I supposed to feel like the entire computer club had it coming, as well as the poor girl she used as a pawn in this scheme? Well, sorry, denied.
@viviorunitia70399 жыл бұрын
Superfield You're really exaggerating things. There is a reason as to why Haruhi acts the way she does, but it's explained later on in the series. Also, she does have compassion for her club members, as evidenced in her behaviour towards Kyon in the hospital and in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. You just have to watch the Anime for some time before you get to look behind her facade. There is much worse shit in Anime than Mikuru having her breats groped for a few seconds. That's really tame compared to the things Berserk pulls off, for example.
@SuperfieldCrUn9 жыл бұрын
Vivi Orunitia All I mean is that I got a TERRIBLE first impression of the show, so much that I really didn't care to look any further. It left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I've got a pile of stuff I'm very much excited about watching, so "giving Haruhi a second chance" is _very_ low on my priorities.
@viviorunitia70399 жыл бұрын
Superfield There are a lot of shows or games that start out rather mediocre, but later get really good. I wouldn't drop a show after the first few episodes just because it didn't click with you yet. Another example: Nier is very boring until you reach the middle of the game. After that, you get to see the backstories of the characters and the pacing of the plot is much higher than in the first half. It gets even better once you start a New Game+ because you get additional dialogue from the enemies that changes your perspective of the story. I wasn't really impressed with Haruhi or Nier at first, but dropping them would have led to missing out on two excellent stories.

this show is so close to my heart .... heck , its in my heart , the level of relating i have with this and also lots of others who watch this anime is unbelievable , i think this can attract lots because we all as kids have our fantasies and wonders we want to explore do these exist or not and this also has that charm that makes you remember the best times in your school days when you were suspicious about lots of myths and then you discuss them with your friends , this is why i love this anime also because of the great diversity of genres, humour , and great story writing too, love both sub and dub great anime review btw.

That is a very impressive score, right there, and I agree with you pretty much completely. :D The only thing I disagree on is the dub, which from the small clips you showed made me cringe in embarasment. Original Japanese cast is full of big name professionals that did an absolutely amazing job bringing the characters alive, and giving them their unique personalities. But as always, that all comes down to personal preference, so I'll not bitch about it any more. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Movie (which I consider brilliant). And Endless Eight... Well, let's just say that you're not alone in your suffering. :/ Merry Christmas, btw. :P
@tomaschagoya196711 жыл бұрын
I agree with this person. The dub does not fully encompass this anime; and not the vast majority. Is like having USA novelas; so bad and embarrassing wanna be's which makes me cringe. I have hated dub so much that I started understanding Japanese and/or reading really fast to fully enjoy shows in their natal language.
