If you finished watching the video, you might have noticed a particular something missing from the new revamped final verdict section. From this point on, my reviews will not contain numerical scores. It is from my experience that having those scores leads to one of two things: first, a greater importance placed on said scores over anything else that I might have actually said over the course of the video, and second, an unfair comparison between shows based purely on the numbers assigned to them. If you really want numerical scores, I'm quite sure that there are a slew of anime watchers on websites such as MAL, Hummingbird and AniList that can oblige you with some.
If you feel the need to unsubscribe due to this latest development, please feel free with the knowledge that there will be no hard feelings.

While I love the bright, vibrant colors and clear lines that you can get with digital methods, there is a certain otherwise unattainable beauty to the faded outlines and pastel-like backgrounds of older anime.
@KazuyaMithra
@KazuyaMithra 9 жыл бұрын
Digital animation is so fake and artificial looking. I find it hard to commend the efforts of who ever made it since its like a computer does all the work for them. Hand painted is so much more diverse. Everything so much more organic and natural looking, unlike digital where everything looks too bright and it can kill a bit of the atmosphere for me. And there's been great stuff to come out of it like Akira and the first GitS movie, and those are 50 times more well animated than crap today. Its like fast food and restaurant food. One is quicker, lower quality, and cheaper, whereas the other varies more in quality, but has more effort in it and is generally better.
@Skywardflare758
@Skywardflare758 9 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the show itself. Darker atmosphere, like Trigun, works better hand animated. Other shows, like Terror in Resonance, work much better digitally animated. Each form has advantages and disadvantages. Digital allows more detail, crisper images, and better conveys motion while hand drawn allows better control of color and detail, a more organic feeling, and more interesting techniques with the background. The best examples of each come from Ghibli for hand drawn and Dreamworks, Pixar, and Disney for digital. A movie like Castle in the Sky works much better hand drawn while movies like Kung Fu Panda and Wall-E work much better digitally animated. The catch with hand animation though is that it takes a large amount of effort and resources to make something that looks as good as digital, plus people are naturally inclined to go to the cleaner looking shows. The minor benefits (in some circumstances) of doing hand drawn animation are not worth the extra cost, time, and shrinking of the audience. Plus, with how good animation programs are getting, soon the advantages of hand drawn animation will be completely gone. It will be like comparing film and digital photography. Film used to have some advantages over digital, but know they're all gone. There are things digital can do that are beyond impractical to do by hand, and ease/cost is by no means the only reason digital is dominating the market.
@KazuyaMithra

If you want to see one of the best hand drawn anime, I'd watch the ova called Neo Tokyo. If I saw it with digital animation, it just would not work.

I think I might just be one of those guys, but I never found the animation to be dated. In fact I think it's actually impossible for 2d animation to be dated since it's (for the most part) actually drawn. Literally art in motion. So I don't really see why people think this looks outdated.
@KazuyaMithra
@KazuyaMithra 9 жыл бұрын
I know right. All because a guy sat there and painted everything BY HAND as apposed to some guy lazily slopping it together on a computer doesn't make it dated. Hell it shows like that should be more commended. Its like watching actual art move. Way more effort out into cel as apposed to crappy digital. But no, if there are no CGi lens flare effects, then its dated, according to people.

ethan philpot 1. Digital animation has allowed a crapton of advanced camera movement techniques that were financially unfeasible before. Honestly, how many times have you seen truly elaborate camera movement in non-digital animation? I haven't even seen Attack on Titan, and this gif alone already makes me want to watch it: 25.media.tumblr.com/d254067896ce31df89d9232cf63fe807/tumblr_mrcckyG9R61qjqgyio1_500.gif Note how the background moves the way it should in a 3D perspective. It's not just a flat image panned over. 2. Digital animation has allowed a crapton of colors that couldn't be produced before because they didn't (and still don't) exist as cel-applicable paints. REDLINE avoids this by blending hand-drawn animation with digital colors. Other than that, ANY hand-drawn anime with a color palette as wide and varied as that of, say, Guilty Crown? Kara no Kyoukai? No? I thought so... 3. Lastly, there exists a certain hard to define general "style" of character design that slowly changes over time. Many anime do not conform to it, of course, but many do. I never minded this, so I don't have a problem of watching older shows, but come on, do you honestly think Vash looks similar to modern character design? Goku? Seto Kaiba? I like the character design for all three of these characters, but I wouldn't say they look similar to the newer ones. So, for those who don't like these older styles, yes, there is such a thing as outdated animation and/or character design. 4. For specific shows, digital animation has also allowed for a look of sterility that was unachievable before. Serial Experiments Lain doesn't really have amazing animation, but its atmosphere of sterility is something that would've been killed by a purely hand-drawn style. Someone has already said there needs to be an Akira-red, I say there needs to be a Lain-white. Lain uses dark colors a lot, but its whites are extreme and blinding, reinforcing that clinical feel whenever it's necessary.

vanishy0urself I could spend quit a while trying to discuss each of your points in detail, but I'm rather tired today and instead I'll just say this: something was lost in the transition from Cell animation to Digital. Some think it was the grittiness, others believe that it was the wonder of looking at amazing animation and realizing it was drawn all by hand. Sure Attack on Titan looks good, but when you realize (usually by seeing an object that looks CGI) that it was made on a computer, all of that charm goes away. For 99% of shows, hand drawn animation is preferable to digital, because hand drawn animation has a certain style that digital will never be able to reproduce. Unfortunately, digital is the future, not because it is superior, but because of the cost saving that it entails, and the lack of modern anime artists.

Actually, when it comes to Vash, I think that his serious persona is the real one and the rest is just an act to fool people, maybe even himself, especially considering how much shit life threw at him. I'm not saying that everything happy is the act, but atleast some part of it must be, like for example those fake smiles (manga readers would understand what I mean by that). Yeah he is a really good, complex character.

Hey, i always saw Vash's silly side as a Mental defence mechanism. Hes been thru so much horrible shit and feels so much guilt for the things hes done (altho it wasnt really his fault like blowing up those citys) That he has his alter ego that lets him get thru the day without being totally depressed and useless. Like how he was just a sitting the dirt for so long blowin up july. His story takes place over almost 100 years, he know what he has to do, he has to DEAL WITH his brother, but that cant get him thru everyday life, year after year. I think its a good parallel to Kenshin Himura. He knows the truth, but prefers the happy silly nonsense when he can have it

I still remember the first time I watched Trigun, it was summer 2013, and I was browsing Netflix randomly and came across the series, with dub thankfully. I had heard good things about it online, and remember seeing the tail end of an episode on adult swim early one morning, though not know what it was at the time, and decided to check it out. About a week later I finished the series and to this day it holds a special place in my heart as one of those anime's that people must see. From beginning to end, Trigun is one of my favorite show, anime or not.

I seriously hate it when people don't check out *ANY* show, not even anime just any show, just because it's "old." Well shit By that logic one piece is old since it's 2015 and it came out in the early 2000's! I honestly dont disagree that modern animation is able to do things much more effectively then old school animation, but it doesn't make it bad! This animation is down right awesome, and so is the story! Not every anime has to be like AoT and have a budget big enough to buy a small country!

The comments section for this video killed me. Everyones either trashtalking Trigun for really stupid and/or biased reasons or are talking about how Brotherhood is better than the original anime series. Trigun I watched only maybe a year back, and it's already among my favorite animes of all time alongside Spice and Wolf. It's a good fucking show, and it shows WAY more depth than, say, Rurouni Kenshin, a show that is similar in a lot of ways but never really hits as deep. Both shows use cliches, but Trigun actually adds its own personality to them, its own identity. Rurouni Kenshin to this day bugs me because it's so predictable. Trigun starts off seeming predictable, but starts shooting its cliche's in the kneecaps. I was proven wrong on multiple occasions about where the show was going. For example, I thought Vash would end up having some deep and pseudo inspiration reason for not killing. QUITE THE FUCKING CONTRARY, the show makes it clear that he's living a fools dream, and even makes a point out of how him refusing to kill people can at times actually make situations worse. Vash is stubborn. He's shown to be an imperfect character who's desperately trying to do the right thing, even when he doesn't know what that is, and that ultimately proves at times to be his major flaw. Vash is a human being, in other words; making him an excellent character. On a side note, regarding FMA, Brotherhood is, how do I put this, more shonen crap straight out of the ass of Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. The original series intentionally strayed away from the manga to try and give the show its own identity, and that they did. They presented a lot of original ideas and concepts, and actually one-upped the manga itself. Then the manga's writers got pissed off about how they took their idea and made it better, and ended up redoing the show to make it more accurate to the manga, and low and behold, it's a contrived and predictable mess now. I hate to break it to you guys, but just because something is more true to its source material doesn't automatically make it better. Attack on Titan, the anime, is vastly superior to the manga. In fact, the manga is downright horseshit. Among the numerous other issues with the series, it actually has our main characters blatantly ignoring SEVERAL MAJOR VILLAINS IN THE PLOT JUST CASUALLY TALKING ABOUT THEIR TITAN FORMS IN THE BACKGROUND. The manga treats this like it's NOTHING NOTABLE. It's fucking astounding, and yet I guarantee you'll still have people arguing for its superiority just because it's the written material. Horseshit. I don't care if it's written or if it's animated, one can be done better than the other at times, and both 2003's FMA and Attack on Titan the anime are vastly superior to their source material.

You do realize that Hiromu Arakawa, the author of FMA, was the one who encouraged the staff of the 2003 anime to do their own thing with it. It's one thing to prefer 2003 over Brotherhood, but at least respect the author herself because without her manga and her encouragement the 2003 anime would never of happened.

Yea I trigun about 2 years ago for the first time, right as I was getting into anime and it is easily one of my favorite shows. Same with evangelion and bebop, though trigun is easily the best of those 3 for me. None of my love for it is based on 90's nostalgia, I believe it is a great show that stands on it own merits. The animation is still passable for hand-drawn animation and is very consistent. For anyone who thinks hand-drawn is all bad, I would say watch GITS or Bebop those are great looking, let alone the old disney stuff which still looks good despite being 50+ years old. Though yea lot of hand-drawn stuff looks bad, but Trigun is atleast middling in anime hand-drawn quality For FMA I would have to watch them again but I really lump them together and don't really make distincition between the two they are simply different stories. What I think he is getting at for FMA though is that if you watch Brotherhood first it will be much harder to go back to the original than the other way around considering the animation and the fact that the first halfish is very similiar, which was a big reason I dropped Brotherhood half way through for a few months. I would also say that for everyone's bashing on it the First one is still a fantastic show, with a far less shouneny let fight the big bad, with an ending that is more unique. For AOT, I wasn't a huge fan of the show but I did check out the manga and I agree that it was pretty bad.

Sesshon Seizu I never said any names in particular. I referred to the people behind it in general, which is true. The people behind publishing the original manga did not like what came out of the 2003 series, so they redid it and ended up making their own which was more true to the manga.

After seeing your video on Top 25ish Anime, I was suprised to see no review of Trigun. So, I watched it myself. And loved it. Nice to see you finally review it! Fun Facts: -Vash's revolver is based on the Italian Mateba 2006m. Yeah, that gun from Ghost in the Shell. There actually is a revolver made today that is the spiritual successor to the Mateba: the Chiappa Rhino, who's silver version looks even more as Vash's gun. Not only that, but having the barrel aligned with the bottom cylinder chamber practically eliminates recoil, allowing for accurate rapid-firing. -Trigun was actually much more popular in the West than Japan, and it alongside Cowboy Bebop were the first animes to have good quality dubs. -There is a Trigun movie made in 2010(?) that's dub used many of the same actors. Due to Western popularity of the show, it was more catered to us Westerners anyways. Funny it would use the Manga's art style, though, over the Anime's.

I remember seeing this back in the day, but because it was on a broadcast routine I never got to see many episodes. Now all the episodes are on Netflix and I can finally watch them back to back. While back in the day I thought the style was a little dusty, I love it now for the more classic design of anime characters. But the one thing that stuck with me most... is how more serious this anime was than I thought. I never got to see a whole lot of episodes, and most were the first few, so I thought it was just a bit of a comical adventure with our main hero. But boy, does it go dark halfway of the show, I didnt expect that, but it got me even more invested in the characters and story.

Arkada, I think you're biased toward Trigun and Cowboy Bebop too much. I'm saying this as a fan of yours, not hating. I suspect it's a nostalgia thing since you grew up with these anime. Maybe they used to be the best during their time, but in today's standard they aren't so great anymore. I watched both shows mostly because of your recommendation and I expected to enjoy them like you do, but honestly they both are disappointingly boring. I must say I was intrigued with Trigun at first after seeing some of Vash's badass moves, and the later reveal about his past that *SPOILER* he's not a human and the main villain is his brother *SPOILER*, but this is torn down by the boring and repetitive progression, and inconsistency. The story will just follow a pattern of trouble happens -> everyone panic -> Vash save the day -> because he's badass, until at the last part of the show he got slapped around silly because the plot wants to. Having said that, I still enjoyed Trigun a lot more than Bebop. I was able to marathon Trigun to the end, but I can never get pass episode 8 of Bebop despite trying it 4 times.
@rianatsume7318
@rianatsume7318 9 жыл бұрын
I think you're probably right about the nostalgia thing. He does seem quite biased, but I think he's biased with good reason. I really don't agree that Trigun and Cowboy Bebop don't hold up to today's standard, especially Cowboy Bebop. And I think I can say this with a clean conscience because before my friends FINALLY got me to watch Cowboy Bebop, I was really prejudiced against the show and I mean REALLY. I hated the sci-fi genre, I thought the title sounded stupid (I thought it was gonna be something like "cowboys vs. aliens"), the main character's hair looked ridiculous, and it just looked so, so, so.....OLD and I couldn't STAND it. But when I finally did watch it, I found it to be the most enjoyable, cool, complex (because of the characters), funny, sad, sophisticated, and intelligent show I've ever watched. And even with all the newer awesome shows that have been coming out, I still hold that opinion. Since I've watched Cowboy Bebop, it has topped any and all favorite anime I have and has not fallen yet. I guess my point is, Cowboy Bebop DOES still hold it's own with today's standard and in a way, so does Trigun. The thing is, most people don't realize it because they're, well, OLD and it's easy to make early judgments against anything old. I know plenty of anime fans, fans who did NOT grow up during the 90s who love Trigun or Cowboy Bebop or both. Heck, you can even find people who don't really like anime that make an exception for Cowboy Bebop, I know I have. Maybe these two anime aren't the best anymore, maybe they never were, but nevertheless, both Trigun and Cowboy Bebop still have their well deserved places in the hearts of many anime fans. Yeah, they are old fashioned, but like a favorite character of mine once said, "people might just need a little old fashioned."

@rustygear447 9 жыл бұрын
Ria Natsume Hmm I see. I'm a little different. I don't feel Cowboy Bebop is that old at all. Even to today standard, the art and animation are fantastic especially in the movie. The dub and music are top notch as well. My problem with it is that it has no hook. There's nothing that i find interesting enough to keep watching. 1. The world is uninteresting. The sci-fi elements are just there for the sake of being sci-fi. They can completely change the setting to wild west cowboy riding horses, and still have the same story line since it only focus on Spike's little group chasing one guy after another. A good sci-fi story would be something like Ghost In The Shell, where the sci-fi element really play a role in shaping the story. 2. The characters are uninteresting. Spike is just an above average guy who act cool. He's pretty good with combat but nothing on the level of Bruce Lee. He's not witty except when he's flirting with female characters. There's just nothing special about him. Everyone else are also just an average bounty hunter, except the little kid. I think the kid is the most interesting character in there. I can't help but imagine that if Bebop's world was a real world with billions of people in it, there has to be a much more interesting group out there than them. Just look at our world, there are so many awesome people with amazing skills and it's not a fiction. And yet in a fictional story with spaceships flying around, they give us a very unimpressive bunch. I'm not asking for super power or anything. I just feel like there's no characteristics that's interesting in these characters for me to keep following their adventure. After i've seen one arc, I feel like I've seen it all. Let me give an example, Desert Punk is one of my favorite show because of the characters. Kanta the main character is just a short, ugly, and perverted virgin bounty hunter. Despite having nothing good going for him, he can still survive the desert and make a name for himself as the Desert Punk, and get a hot girl at the end using his wit and persistence. It's interesting to watch his adventure because I can't predict what ridiculous trick he has to devise next against his enemies and rivals. His rivalry with other characters like Rain Spider and Junko is also very unpredictable and hilarious. 3. The story is uninteresting. There is no deep overarching story that things progress into, and nothing really special happen in each arc. I'm not saying that the Bebop never do anything grand. They practically save the world or at least a city from destruction on a daily basis, but the process of doing so is just uninteresting. There's not much tension going on through out the arc (at least from what i've seen, I only watched the movie and 8 episodes of the anime). Wait i shouldn't say that. There are times of danger that are supposed to be tense moments, but somehow the way they deliver it feel so safe. Even when Faye was captured and almost killed multiple times I don't feel any tension. I just feel like it's just another day for their bunch. There's not much desperation or sense of urgency going on.

Seyha Leonhartz Well really all that is just subjective. Honestly the moment you like something that in itself is bias, as well as when you hate something that is also bias. Still though nostalgia plays a factor in many things people hold dear, and it doesn't even necessarily have to be years old for nostalgia to form. Now before I lose my train of thought I should get on to the point. Well not liking the show or its characters does not really mean that the story or characters don't hold up to today's standards, well usually. Honestly I still love many of the characters of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. However I grew up watching Trigun, but not Bebop I watch that recently and I adore the characters. In the end though really it all comes down to opinion, and no one's opinion is really wrong. Although he did say that you might not enjoy these shows, but that perhaps you should watch them because they had an impact on Anime in the west. Much like looking back at history. Hopefully what I have written makes sense I sometimes have problems conveying messages.

I would hate to hear your guys opinions on movies from the 80-90s. I grew up with this...anime from the 80s, 90s, 2000s. But what is this "standard" that people keep referring to. Is it just a look? Or is it a style of writing that isn't keeping your attention? If its looks, I think thats pretty shallow thinking. There are lots of good things from the past that still hold up. This series is a battle of polar opposites. Yin and Yang shit. The small stories leads to the big picture. Seeing that Vash and Knives are super humans and a link between the plants that terraform life....neat to see. Help me out. I don't have time to watch the thousands of series out there nowadays. Recommend new Scifi to me.

His argument is that you can watch the original and still be able to watch Brotherhood, but not the other way around. But, yes, Brotherhood is the superior version. (though I still prefer the original.)

You can watch the 2003 version (which is an amazing example of anime adaption going it's own way and still being awesome) and Brotherhood later and still enjoy both, but watching Brotherhood and then the 2003 version isn't nearly as enjoyable. That's one view at least.

I understand. FMA 1 has the best beginning and brotherhood has best ending. But still should have mentioned brotherhood because of its fucking amazing plot and etc

Vash was my first cosplay back in 2004 or something like that. I was just talking to a friend tonight about remaking it because I want to see how much better I would do now after more than a decade of experience (and, I won't lie, because of nostalgia). Then stumbled on this video. Everything you say is true and more. I'm definitely remaking Vash for my next convention now. No if about it.

That's a shame, the final 5 or 6 episodes are the most amazing ones imo. That show really knew how to draw to an incredible close.

You know, GR, while I agree with most of your review, I have to disagree with your review on Trigun. In fact, I think trigun is one of the most overrated anime I've seen. I first saw Trigun back in 2004, and it just didn't leave any impact on me at all. It was just "OK". Fast forward 10 years later, and i completely forgot what the anime was about. recently, I gave it a second chance and re-watched the entire series. Then I know why I couldn't remember anything from this series 10 years ago; it just doesn't leave any lasting impression on me. The first 5-6 episodes are just blah. The series overall was light-hearted comedy, but not enough depth. The only episodes I enjoyed were the ones with Wolfwood. Other than that, meh. The anime didn't do a good job convincing the viewers on why the antagonist became the way he did. His experience overall just wasn't anywhere near enough for him to transform into this evil person. And the ending was a let down. In no way shape of form show this anime be comparable to Cowboy Bebop. Now THAT was a great anime!

+VF5 I understand why you feel that way. The anime does not pick up its pace until like episode 15. I too was disappointed with the ending. The whole "thou shall not kill thing" is getting ridiculous. SPOILER: Sure it makes sense, but even at the end, his own brother couldn't kill or manage to shoot his vital organs. The guy serving under Knives had no reason to follow Knives at all. In fact, I thought he was the antagonist the whole time until towards the end of the series. I mean he can control people with his mind alone, what makes him want to follow someone like Knives who is inferior to him. There are just some plot holes and some random irrelevent stuff that I feel like can be cut out. The 2 side girl characters had too much screen time too and they did even get annoying at some points in the show. Also, what's up with the pistol that can transform into a huge cannon??? That was never really clarifed. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the show. I would probably give it a 8/10 max.

I loved this anime! Thank you so much for advising to watch it. I was disappointed by the ending, though, but at that point, it really didn't matter much. Once again, thanks a lot and, till next time, ... stay frosty.
