Berserk = Shakespeare + Game of Thrones, set in the world of HP Lovecraft.

+DragonGodMillionare Bloodbourne and Dark Souls were both heavily inspired by Berserk and HP Lovecraft. So I would say it's fitting for all of them.

drakeunderscoremason True, but Bloodborne's setting is way more Lovecraft inspired if you look at it from a larger scale. The entire school of Byrgenwerth Cosmos monsters were based on Lovecraftian themes. Amygdala and the Kin children all had similar designs to that of Cthulu with their tentacles and colors. Dark Souls does have Lovecraftian themes don't get me wrong but they aren't nearly as obvious or plentiful. Same with Berserk. That's not a bad thing. In fact I love how subtle Miyazaki was with placing love-crafts themes in the game.

OP is spot on, everything revealed post Kushan invasion is very Lovecraft (just google image search ganishka). Bloodborne is more Dream Cycle Lovecraft, but its not inaccurate to describe the universe and cosmology of Berserk as the world of Lovecraft (maybe more of the August Derleth-ish flavor).

The ending is pretty much perfect for this anime in my opinion. I don't really care that it doesn't show Skull Knight, even if it's a shame because he's a badass, but the eclipse is so brutal and hopeless that i think that adding anything else would have kinda ruined the feeling it leaves you with. Tha mix of total despair and pure hatred towards Griffith you're left with is the same feeling Guts has after all.

Head In The Sky the original FMA was a lot darker than brotherhood hood, rezero demonstrates emotional breaking points (there are some over the top moments, not many), evangelion is great, Kimi no na wa is incredible, Clannad, code Geass (if you like death not and can stand mecha), baccono, and zankyou no terror (bad ending), these are some I found great that aren't super over the top. though I haven't seen every anime ever, these are some I've liked a lot

About the Berserk movies. They're good (I mean, granted it IS still Berserk) Buuuut only the third movie is worth watching simply because it gives a better sense of closure than where the anime ends. Also, jesus christ, if you thought the final episode of Berserk was horrifying just fucking WAIT till you see the entire last 30 to 20 minutes of the third Berserk movie

I recently watched it for the first time (the ending haters kept me from watching it sooner :v) and as much as I loved this anime (which might be my favorite of all time now) the animation is absolute garbage... It's almost a slide show and even the character design has some inconsistencies...

Fidel Guevara Berserk (1995) certainly has some beautiful artwork but let's not pretend that it was on a shoestring budget when it came to the actual animation itself.

Fidel Guevara I wouldn't say better but it definitely holds up and has a greater understanding of force, mass and momentum than most animations. Except for Guts' first duel with Griffith, Guts' immense sword is immense and often crushes inplace of cutting. And I love it for the immersion that comes with it.

Because the animation is not as good as it is today. They have a much better technology to work with today, compare berserk to Berserk the golden age and you'll see one is a much nicer looking show.

Sometimes it is just down to specific styles and themes. For example I love animation from the 40s and 50s, where most shows are of a high quality, but I detest shows from the 80s , where to many look cheap and repulsive.

He just said skip episode 1. Which is fair, considering it's a really rough adaptation of the first chapter. That cuts out a lot of important character moments for Guts because Puck isn't there. And he didn't say it's a bad ending, he said it's a "read the manga" ending. Which is true

Dave Roy Speaking of Pokemon this anime was done by the same studio who does Pokemon OLM Inc. Berserk is their only mature rated anime series that they ever produced. I wish I have at least $600 Million Dollars (USD), so I could finance a real life Berserk Series, on Par with Game of Thrones (HBO). I think the appropriate budget would be $200-$250 Million for 12 Episode per season. At the moment, the source material has enough to make 6 seasons. Season 1 - The Golden Age Arc Part One (Ending with the Battle of Battle for Doldrey) Season 2 - The Fall - Guts leaving and Griffith loses his shit, the Band of the Hawk Falls, Guts Goes on his journey, the rescue and the Great Eclipse Season 3 - Guts meets up with Puck, the Count,, the "Fairy girl" and end with trying to find Caska at the "religious area". Season 4 - The whole season covering the religious fanatics and battling the "angels" Season 5 - The Kushan Invasion Arc and the reappearance of Griffith Season 6 - The witch and discovering the Berserk armour, the defeat of the Kushan and the appearance of "Fantasia Arc" Season 7 - Fantasia Arc - At the moment still in progress.

+xexious2 That's the series in a nutshell. The manga really shows how hopeless Gut's life gets. Every horrible thing that Guts pushes through and wins makes me respect him even more. The absolute absurdity of Guts fighting against very powerful demons and demon lords without much help at first. Even when he does get help fighting it's never really easy. Just hoping that one day he get's everything hes suffered so much for. Hoping that he gets some level of happiness in his bleak journey.

Episode 1 just gives a little context for the rest of the series. It: 1.) Introduces Guts as a complete badass 2.) Shows that monsters actually do exist in the series, so the ending isn't just out of no where (and that Guts is hunting them down) 3.) Foreshadows the eclipse and the God hand (and that Guts is out for revenge) 4.) Proves that he does survive the Eclipse in the final episode The manga is a masterpiece, and this anime accomplishes its goal of pitching the manga to you. That's right, the whole anime is just one big Ad. Read the manga.

I watched Berserk on a whim. Didn't really know what I was getting myself in tbh. But Oh My God did I love it. I'm a sucker for "older" anime and there are alot of old gemes out there and Berserk is one of them. I particularly liked the movies too (altho I could have done with out he CGI) But Guts story is heart wrenching to say the least. For me, its a solid 9/10 XD

"Skip the first episode"... NOPE, SORRY but no! don't listen to him, long time ago I used to think in the very same way, because the first episode as well as the first three volumes of the Manga spoils a lot of things, and gives you more questions than answers, but that’s why you and anyone should watch the first episode, because you know how everything is going to become, you know Griffith would become Femto, and Guts will become the Black Swordsman, but WHY? And by watching the series you will even forget about the first episode, and at the very end, you will have the answers, you will feel all the pain, and would understand the beginning; you will go back and scream "GRIFFITH!!!!" alongside Guts.

The movies remind me of a what a history dork like me would have done with it. There actually are some great details added, but unfortunately the 3D was a little subpar and a lot of the brilliant details that added realism and quality was at the expense of the more cohesive, driven story and character development. It doesn't stand on its own any near as well as the original series. As an add on to the original, I don't hate it.

The Berserk Manga is literally one of my favorite things of all time. I love it so much. The anime.....I like the 1997 anime and somewhat the Golden Age movies.....not the other ones. I highly recommend anyone and everyone to READ Berserk. Watch it at your in risk. But it is one of the best reads I have ever had the pleasure of going through and keeping up with.

I was SO happy to see you do this video and to hear my own opinions echoed back at me. I tell people all the time that Berserk is my favorite anime, and they're usually like "What's Berserk?", and then sing the berserker song from Clerks...and then I hate them a little...But then I watch the bloopers again, and all is right in the world. Haha. Seriously though, when I started my channel, one of the first scenes I ever fandubbed was Guts and Casca on the hillside talking about the bonfire of dreams. I'm even working on a scene now from Golden Age Arc I that should be out soon. I actually really enjoyed the movies. Yes, it was basically just a retelling of the original anime, but it filled in a lot of the gaps and made the story told by both versions feel more complete. And visually, it was gorgeous, as long as you could get past the strange animation to CGI changes. I look forward to your review of it...and also wouldn't mind helping you produce it. 0:) And Claymore? Good call!

The story is meant to start off on the first episode for a lot of good reasons: -When Guts is torturing the Snake Baron: he establishes the themes of perseverance and struggle. -It establishes that the wars and political intrigue that happens in the show is every bit as frivolous as Adon's rantings and ravings about how great and important his Corlbowitz family is. -The story would not have the same feeling of suspense, the anticipation for the explanation of how the world fell under darkness, if the Black Swordsman was omitted. -Without showing that supernatural creatures like Apostles exist: the audience would be lead to believe that Berserk was a strictly realistic medieval story until Zod the Immortal randomly pops out of nowhere. -Guts is meant to be presented, first and foremost, as a 90's anti-hero archetype like the Punisher or the Comedian from Watchmen and every subsequent episode is a flashback to the formative experiences that molded him into it, making him more of a more fleshed-out variation on the type than, say, Bloodwulf.

Watch the first episode, even if you watch it last. The dragon slayer is revealed, we see that Guts is still battling demons and seeking out Griffith etc. But, more importantly, read the manga! So amazing.

+Alucard i would say they were condensed very well. sure they did cut out a lot but it makes sense since it was a remake in movie form. it's not uncommon for animes to cut out when they want to show a modern audience. but they did do that for budget reasons mainly.. while i will say most hardcore fans will still put the show over the movies. I will say these movies were some of the best and most entertaining movies i have ever seen in a very long time. also the ending for the 3rd movie was amazing and had a better sense of closure when compared to the original. and i think cgi is okay as long as it's done well...and in an anime it works better than crap modern day movies. but hey it's just my opinion. i tend to look at what things are...and not what they aren't.
