Words by Aonghas Phàdraig Caimbeul, a love poem written for two members of the Inverness Gaelic Choir who were getting married; set to music by Màiri Anna NicUalraig (Mary Ann Kennedy). Translation below ("Show More").
Fair love of my heart
Providence and fortune are close by me
How special is my luck at this time
With you lying beside me
Like life side by side with death
The sun brightening the night
A thistle shining like a rose
The poison has been dragged from the apple
The dirt has been turned to gold.
How poor a state I would be in
If you travelled away from me, my darling
O my health and my heart would break
With the end of my light and my day;
Morning would be as the darkness of night
A laugh would be as the mocking of death
My boat would be on the reefs of grief
A sordid ending to the world of poetry.
It was you who gave me reason
It was you who gave me a place
It was you who gave me order
And an anchor and harbour for my boat
O you are like the cotton-grass of the slopes
Like the bard’s guinea in my pocket
You are like a bird on the wing
Without flaw or blame or fault.
I cannot think just now
Of how I would be without you
Like a ship adrift in a storm
Like a small boat sinking to the seabed
Like a baby without a mother, or a guide
Like a slave with no hope or expectation
My darling, you are my leader
My sail, my harbour, my world.
