Time to review one of my favorites, Gransfors Small Hatchet or as we call it in Sweden, Gränsfors Lilla Yxan. Some call it the Mini Hatchet. I think you'll really like this one! enjoy!
If you wanna get this axe: amzn.to/2ywz2Ig
It's perfect for hiking and all sorts of outdoor activities, it's lightweight, doesn't take up much room in your pack and most importantly it's a thrill to use!
The drone I use: amzn.to/2GAf4zk
Main camera: amzn.to/2HHjtQr
50mm lens: amzn.to/2G8W0r1

There's only one thing that I couldn't do with my Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet... And that's to be without it! The GB Mini Hatchet was my first hatchet and I loved it at first sight/touch. I was originally going to buy a plastic handled Fiskars/Gerber Hatchet, then I read an article about hatchets and axes which made me more inquisitive. After some months of reading, listening to and watching reviews I concluded that the GB Mini would be perfect. Some years on, a GB Wildlife Hatchet joined my Mini, and around five years later, a GB Small Forest Axe made it a trio! They accompany a Silky Saw F-180, a Silky Gomboy Outback Saw, and a Silky Fox Bigboy Outback Saw in an ultralight, medium and large kit. A Mora Companion Heavy Duty knife and a Cold Steel SF Shovel accompany whichever kit is being used. I also switch out between the GB Mini Hatchet and Wildlife Hatchet. With the GB Hatchet, a Silky Outback Saw, a Cold Steel SF Shovel and the Mora Companion HD there isn't a lot that can't be achieved. The Shovel also works as a paddle for Packrafting. Edited for typo.

Hey Ted! What I liked the best about the video from "technical" perspective are the colors. They are warm and kinda welcoming. Urging you to go and enjoy the beautiful fall weather while it lasts. Sadly it turned foul a few days ago here where I live. As for the axe it seems like a good tool for the job and being hand made is a big plus. I think people are starting to appreciate the work somebody put in the making of the object they work with or buy more and more. And that's the way it should be. - Michal

As always Michal you are spot on, i really hope we can turn things around so that we produce high quality equipment that can be repaired and fixed instead of thrown away after 6 months! Glad you like the video! Hope you get some nice weather again soon!

I bought one of the GB "Small Hatchet #410" a year or so ago, with the intention of retiring my GDad's little "Western" Pocket Hatchet; I could not be happier. It's beautifully hand-made, and a delightful little tool for processing "cooking fire" wood. I'm not sure if it can do anything more than a less expensive "Pocket Hatchet", but it is the most beautiful in my little collection!

Your videos are well made and to the point. I admire that and really enjoy watching them. I just wanted to say thank you. This hatchet is, without question, a piece of art. There’s something about making use of a tool that was handmade by an actual craftsman. For me, it adds to the whole experience. That tool was made by a craftsman to be used by a craftsman. It is an honor to own one.....in my opinion. The hatchet is of excellent quality and is something you’ll pass on with pride to the next generation. I was given an heirloom such as this when I was a boy and I could feel the adventurous spirit resonating from it. When you acquire a tool such as this it adds to the whole experience. And that’s what this is all about. Thanks again....I look forward to your next video! See you Out There.

Amazing video very informative and to the point!! I just ordered my first ever hatchet and I wanted to be from this legendary brand that produces handcrafted ones…! I’m from Greece (just subscribed) so not so big forests where I am so this size is just perfect for small firewood for a small campfire…or for small hiking trips…and again the quality of this small tool is gonna last for a lifetime and you’ll be able to pass it through your kids in the future…!

I think I’ll be getting this so I can wear it on my belt and use it for smaller tasks. I like to collect wood on the way to my campsites, and it’s annoying to have to take my pack completely off to access my forest axe or to be carrying it the whole way. Having a hatchet I can quickly access on my belt would be nice for that. And then I can break out my axe for the bigger stuff when necessary.

I would love to try it. Interesting to see how small an axe can be and still do some work. But its a bit too expensive to buy something I might find too small. So I think I will go for the bigger wildlife hatchet. I dont worry about the extra 300 g. It might be too big for having in the belt. But thats ok for me. I could still have it in any backpack.

It is a very tiny axe (okay as a wedge) or else kindling, and the bigger forest axe is okay for cutting small branches but not for chopping. To chop you need the splitter or else a hammer and a wedge.
@TedWeirum
@TedWeirum 4 жыл бұрын
I love that it’s so small, you can take in with you everywhere without any trouble, it woks just fine for me, combine it with a bacho Laplander for bigger pieces and you’re all set! This is just one option, bigger axes are the go to option for many! Thanks for watching! :)

@@TedWeirum The keb hike 20/30 backpack has axe straps for a larger axe such as the forest axe, however is not necessary unless you want to chop a lot using a two handed axe. I'd take a cheaper axe with a fiberglass handle instead of a gransfors bruks axe, I think but who knows. Your way makes more sense. You can't fight off a wild animal though with the hatchet or the saw.

I had this hatchet and returned it -its perhaps more like a knife and fish priest than an axe in my opinion, too little mass in the ax head to be of much use. Now have the wildlife hatchet and the outdoors axe, much more efficient for chopping and splitting tasks respectively. However it does look cute, - but at the same price as a proper axe, doesn't make much economic sense to own

05:59.... how many tries? :-) This axe, being a total tools nerd, is on my “I want it” list. But to be honest I like my wild life hatchet so much, that I don’t think the smaller one makes much sense for me. Then again, I didn’t mind carying the small forest axe with me either. Yet I realise you have much more experience in hiking and thus I’ll take your realisation that “light weight” can be a very important factor into consideration! If you have the chance it is worthwhile visiting the Gränsfors bruk location! With a bit of luck you’ll see the black smiths work on the axes there. And there is a small shop and a “museum” - more like a huge collection of axes - too. You might want to keep your wallet at home though ;) The weather looks really good still on the video. How long before the cold really sets in you think?

@TedWeirum
@TedWeirum 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! This would axe would preform in a similar matter, it differs in the head where it’s able to split thicker pieces faster due to the shape of the head, using the force of the axe also allows you to cut branches and such in a more secure way than you would with a knife. Hope that answers your question, thanks for watching!

I’ve carried a small pruning hatchet like thst for a while. A folding saw too but my knife is quite a lot bigger than the eldris ahaha But now I wanna go backpacking and idk exactly what to bring, I can’t be separated from all those as I carry a wood stove, but I just can’t decide on which I do want. The hatchet is nice for campfires and pruning trees fast (I hammock camp and need to cut stuff down at times). But the saw is much more versatile in wood sizes, except it can’t push in stakes for my tarp :/ I guess I could be a savage and push the stakes by using the side of my knife? Maybe I just need a new knife with a hammer head on the hilt lol

Fitting such a handle would take away the ability to just throw it in the backpack and it still would not be as good as a "real axe. But maybe a even longer handle, 80cm or so like the norwegian nobleman axes or a icepick would make it usefull as a walking cane too! But mine will stay short, love it as it is.

Should have shown filleting a fish 🐟 and cleaning a squirrel 🐿. It can be used as a knife 🔪 but will outchop a 6 to 8 inch blade. Even use it as a spatula to flip your🍳eggs or 🥞 pancakes. Or chop wood🌲🌳 for fire🔥 or 🛖shelter. This is one fantastic little survival tool. But actually I like the Silky Big Boy as it's cutting companion.

Totally offtopic question: Since you are always wearing an apple watch AND you go on outdoor adventures, do mind sharing your experience? :) I'm currently torn between getting a garmin fenix 5 plus and a apple watch 4. I know all the specs and stuff but it is hard to find any hands on reviews that also include third party apps for the apple watch. I switched from my garmin oregon gps device to an app setup (MapOut, ViewRanger and Gaia GPS) on my iphone, which works perfectly fine for tour planing and navigating on multi day backpacking trips. Do you also use the apple watch for outdoor navigation? If so, how does the battery hold up? Do you record the track? The workout? Active navigation? Or just looking at the map? Do these options make any difference regarding power consumption? Any other outdoor related app recommendations for the watch? :) I'm not trying to lure you into making a apple watch review, there are already a ton of fanboy videos out there ;) What I'm missing are real world experiences regarding outdoor hobby (apps).. PS: A nice little hatchet presented in a very professional video. I especially liked the little trick for carrying it on your belt!

Thats a really good question! I’m not just saying that, I really think it’s a good question! For overall value I think the Apple Watch is a better option, but no you got me in to making a review about it from the outdoor perspective! I’ll get back to you on this! Thanks! To answer your question a bit more in depth, I changed from the Apple Watch 0 to the 4, but have yet to use it for navigation in the outdoors!

@@TedWeirum I think Stefan's point is that Gransfors Bruk says you should not use an axe as a wedge or to beat on the poll. They caution against this specifically, in bold letters in fact, on page 21 on my copy of The Axe Book. If you were to damage the axe by doing this, Gransfors Bruk may consider that to be abuse, and not warranty the damage.

@@dontravisberry9021 good point there brother! It’s clear then that it’s not recommended, for obvious reasons! In my case this works best for me, I understand that it’s a bit tricky since warranty won’t cover that type of damage. It still works for me! :)

@@TedWeirum Well, yes, things like that work fine . . . until they don't. But it is your axe, free country and all that. That being said, you are dealing with the smallest, likely most delicate axe Gransfors makes. Being aware of the issue, perhaps you limit to some degree how hard you baton? But some of your subscribers may not understand the issue as well as they should. Without that knowledge, someone will likely take a really heavy baton to one and damage their fine axe. Great axes to baton are the various Estwing brand axes, because there is no eye to deform. I regularly wail on an Estwing 16" Campers Axe. But, tough as the Estwing axes are, they sure aren't a Gransfors, and they are not a good option when weight is a consideration.

Another great point brother, I agree that people shouldn’t do it due to the increased risk of damaging the axe, everything I do when I’m out is small stuff, small baton, small pieces of wood. I agree with everything you said, I’m just transparent with how I use it. :)

@borjesvensson8661

Id say so. You have such a small axe to avoid having to drag around a larger one that you really dont need if you only are going to start campfires and such. If being in a larger party it might make sence if one person have a real axe and maybe even one with a larger saw if you are going to do a lot of wood chopping/building large shelters. I think having both axes on you is overkill but owning both gives you flexibility to adapt to what youre going to do. The only thing such a small axe does better than a larger is maybe killing fish, and being light of course!

@@TedWeirum here's one for you Husqvarna axes, same steel better handles, made in same forges for a price, sold to professionals who use tool daily, and sold as a tool. Not as a social media trap. How can a small company like Gransfors supply the world in axes. For instance, one man makes all the small forest axe for all the world? Seriously? Forges win contracts, Gransfors would make Wetterlings. And so did other forges. One company bought them all out, and made Gransfors the number one name. And social media did all the work. Marketing at its best. The reason Husqvarna axes are cheaper is they leave the grind, so whoever buys them puts the edge they want. You can buy 3 axes for the price of a Gransfors. And they use a linisher to grind the edge in seconds. And what you do not hear about is the axes being faulty. How many axes on KZbin look like they have done work? I always wonder why people collect axes they never use, and when they show them being used it is for making tent pegs ect, or copying Ray Mears. It is not a bad thing to learn from KZbin, but do not get sucked into all the hype. Go out and enjoy life, camping. It does not have to cost over a hundred dollars for a small hatchet. I have two large carvers from Gransfors, one is going back, it has hammer marks on the edge of the axe. And they say quality control is high. It is a right side carver, and considering it should have one flat side, these hammer marks ( dents) in the edge cannot be ground out. So it is useless. This is the third one to go back!

Yeah, that’s what I mean, sure there’s a power hammer going up and down but there’s a blacksmith holding the axe head and placing it right every single time, that takes a lot of skill. Would you like them to hammer it by hand during the whole process? What difference would that make? not to mention how much it would slow down the productivity.
@johnmutton799
@johnmutton799 4 жыл бұрын
My point is drop forged ie power hammer is not hand made using a hammer in your hand, these are mass produced. One small forge like that could not keep up with world supplies, why do you think thatthey took over other companies to make their axes? And produce other makes. Take Hultafors wetterlings, who make and made Husqvarna axes, using same steel but don't finnish to their so called specs, but charge 3 times as much for sading the handles. But the grain on the Husqvarna axes is far superior, check them out before buying. It's KZbin that made them popular, and snobbery that slags other makes.
@TedWeirum
@TedWeirum 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been to the hultafors factory, they also use power hammers such as these ones, I guess it’s too big of a demand for them to keep up with handmade all the way.
