Practicing manual in new GR86 2024. Open to feedback. Still breaking in the engine. Im at 350 miles currently. Eager to get to 1000 so I can really open it up!
I've had it for about a month and while it's amazing to have my dream car, im not confident in it as a daily commute into Houston traffic yet. So I'm practicing on the weekends and after work at this park for like 2 hours just stopping and going. I'm getting better but getting off the line fast is what Im struggling with.
GR86 2024 - Premium Steel w/ GR Performance Exhaust. The exhaust didn't come with the car so I ordered it for about $1,200 and had it installed by a Toyota dealer for around $300.
An interesting note: I don't think I hear the ASC fake engine noise. Maybe it was turned off at the dealer?

another piece of advice: try not to leave the clutch in while being stopped and in gear. It will wear out your springs.

Dont skip gears. Lugging the engine could damage the motor later down the road.

You are doing great! That incline gear skip is a negative lol The gr86 doesn't have a ton of tq so help the motor out by just going into second. Skipping gears is perfectly good at higher revs and you did it well just yeah not at that low an rpm on an incline is all. You did great.. like anything you will get better over time and your muscle memory will take over as you drive it more. Once you have the basics down you will learn to rev match properly on downshifts (you don't have to heel toe, you can blip the throttle and it works excellently as well in non-race driving as in some cars it can make it a little weird depending on your foot size and pedal spacing.) I love the eurobeat playing too btw haha great vid brother!

Appreciate this a lot. Yeaa maan I remember watching Initial D about 20 years ago and my dad had a RX-7 FC which was also a manual which I learned how to drive. So it was very cool! It was short-lived though since the engine didn't last long. Coming from a beat up Corolla '03..it's amazing to have this 86.

I was also having a bit of a hard time watching you skip 2nd gear that many times, even though it's fine if you are high on the rpm band, but I'm more of the type of person to barely use 1st gear. Shifting low rpm on 1st to 2nd is fine, and it removes some of the stress off of the clutch and tranny, and makes the driving smoother. I only do mid-long 1st gear when I absolutely need the torque (hill) or want a fast start.

It's interesting how when you're coming to a stop you throw it in neutral and let go of the clutch and let it coast. I usually just brake first until I'm almost stopped and then step on the clutch and then throw it in neutral and release the clutch while at a stop. I like your way though.

Yea I started doing what you're doing now. Brake then clutch to neutral and release clutch at a stop. Sometimes I mix it up.

Chill out being so rough with the car man. The shifter is your friend, the buttons are your friend. No need smashing stuff

I haven't witnessed it much here in the UK but what is it with you guys not telling if a car is in neutral or not? What's all this wiggling 😂 surely it must do your head in worrying about it. All US car channels seem to do it lol

Haha. You are right! I don't do it much anymore. At least I don't think I do 🤔

you're really lugging that motor going from 1st to 3rd at barely any mph like that, why skip 2nd gear??? Also try not to coast in neutral for so long...if you can try and stay in gear for as long as you can while coming to a stop..you never know what can happen in front of you and if youre in neutral youre screwed. just my 2 cents!

Idk I figure I was saving gas skipping a gear lol. And I don't feel I need to accelerate as much sometimes. Good to know though. Also I got a question. Should I go into first gear when going up my driveway? Or just just stay in second?

@@KrisHTX You dont save gas when engine is at low rpm- you save gas with light throttle pressure. You dont save gas by coasting in neutral as opposed to just staying in gear without touching the throttle either. Flooring it in high gear at a low speed is pointless at best, increases wear and tear on the engine at worst (especially when going uphill in high gear). As a beginner you take off really well and you dont ride the clutch a lot (which shortens its lifespan), keep it up. Skipping gears is ok, but just make sure the engine is above 1500 when in gear. While youre still learning- stay in first when in parking lots and up your driveway. Once you get better you can just coast onto your driveway and use momentum instead but it really doesnt matter either way. Great job making the jump to manual and going outside your comfort zone- it really is such a waste if you like cheap sports cars but cant enjoy them properly by getting an auto that isnt a DCT. Half the fun in an entry level performance car is the handcrafted manual gearbox developed specifically for your car and practicing MT techniques like rev matching & heel toeing but dont start doing it until you are comfortable driving 'normally' as if youre driving an econobox or SUV.
