i am actually glad to see this vehicle offered in an automatic. Despite being less fun, it is still way more fun than 98% of the cars on the road. There is no shame in driving an auto GR86 if the person is not familiar with a manual, as long as these cars and an MX5 sells, we are the winners.

Only way to become familiar with manual is to drive one.

@@joeracer302 i personally have been daily driving the same manual car for 8 years. manuals are easy imo and i have become familiar to such degree with the car that i could drive it with my eyes closed. However, so individuals may not be able to overcome their fear of driving a manual, which is perfectly fine tbh

Coincidentally The slush box not downshifting some times saves the engine from oil starvation 😂

Automatic never detracts, it's only less technical for the driver. Either way, ability to shift is what is needed. This car is amazing Either auto or manual, just a preference and mine is manual.

I'm here after TheTopher drives it. It is indeed a fun sports car with an antomatic. When I first look at the GR86 that is also a itasha, I always think that the transmission going to be a manual, but I was shocked to see fact that it is an automatic, and it is so insane!

I did track days in an Evo MR with dual clutch transmission, and it was awesome. With the paddle shifters, Could definitely focus more on driving by being able to keep both hands on the steering wheel. And that transmission was awesome.

He's not downshifting enough with the paddle shifters. They're underrated.

It won't let you downshift if the rpms would land above ~6000 on the lower gear. I tested this in mine when it kept beeping at me doing the same thing during autoX

I've seen the issues with downshifting in other videos. It's the only thing that pushed me to buy the MT instead. Really wanted the AT though.

Keiichi Tsuchiya did state that the manual was intended to be the model that offered the complete experience to the driver

To avoid the no no beep when downshifting, need to just do it below 4k rpm with the current programing.

I test drove a brz way back in 2013 and was testing the paddles and it'd do whatever you asked. Even if it was downshifting into red line it would surprisingly just do it. Probably was bad for the engine and changed at some point.

Why is the track empty? End of day bonus session? I found the auto “ok” on track as long as you manually shift.

Yea, I hate gatekeeping opinions, but seriously, people driving auto are missing out on the best aspect of driving sports cars. It’s like they want to give the appearance of being cool in a sportscar but don’t actually care about having a good driving experience.

I kind of agree and disagree. Yes the manual is obviously better for sporty driving for a car like this and its the one I would choose, but like it says in the video its his daily too. He might be unfamiliar with manual and wants a daily spec and thats totally ok. This car can still teach you a lot of things in this form. Rather see him in a proper sport car wit AT than some stupid ass SUV made to be sporty.

@@joeracer302I have driven a fully auto civic as a beater as well as a old school manual Porsche 944 in the summer, and I think the GR86’s paddles are a perfect mix. I can be lazy when I want to be, and shift like Max Verstappen when I’m on the track.
