I installed Tomei baffle on my GR86 in hope of improving the oil pressure drop under high G's. Does it work as expected? I tested at Sonoma raceway and here's what I found.
Engine oil used was 5w30 Motul 8100

Thanks for the data and testing the Tomei baffle. I would be interested to see how GReddy's new baffle for the FA24 stacks up against this, they used smaller openings but only has one plate.

@TrackandBuild Жыл бұрын
My guess is between different baffles the difference won't be significant. According to my observations, my theory is the essential cause might be that FA24 has a pretty shallow oil pan due to limited space and the boxer engine does not have a good return flow due to not utilizing gravity. If that's true, baffles can only provide very limit improvement

Subaru use to recommend 5 or 10w-40 for heavy loads/towing and even 10w-50 for hot dessert climates and racing for the EJ motors in the car manual, before stricter emissions rules,. This was also for non-turbo and non-performance models. I don't think these motors are much different. I don't know about the 10w-50 because I haven't used it, but I would be using 10w-40 on a daily driver in warm climates or heavy load. Oil level should also always be double checked to see if it is at the full line of the dipstick.

You really pushed the car on this! Doing 4 laps of 3:30s is like doing 12 laps on my local track! So I guess that even with these oil pressure dips is not common/easy to harm the engine. Very good video! This type of info is what ive been looking for so thank you. Still debating/waiting to pickup this platform along side with my E92 M3 Track tool to see how these engines hold up. From the looks of it..not too shabby. How many track days do your tires and brake pads last? I love Sub 3klb cars for cost of consumables.
@TrackandBuild
@TrackandBuild Жыл бұрын
This is definitely one of the lowest running cost cars that are still reasonably fast on track. A set of SX2 tires can easily last more than 10 days being driven at very fast pace. Most racing pads also easily last more than 10 days. I've seen people's AP racing rotors last more than 30 days on Gen1 cars. Overall running cost is hard to beat except going with Miata. Bimmers can't even touch that...

Very nice science. I took one screenshot and saw your oil temperature is around 212 f. How are you keeping it that low while on the track? I'm usually around 248 Fahrenheit. Also I've never seen data like this and my question/ observation is this. If the oil pick up is always within a lake of oil then why is there any fluctuation at all? Is there a premium built race engine with this type of data for comparison?
@TrackandBuild
@TrackandBuild Жыл бұрын
I have the oil cooler on to keep it around 210F that day. Without the oil cooler, it would be around 250F. Ideally a well oiled race car would keep the oil pressure consistent above certain RPM. Like what's shown in this new stock type R kzbin.info/www/bejne/m57bfKCiidWYhMU The OE oil pressure gauge shows oil pressure was consistently at around 65psi through the whole course even at 240F+ oil temp
@jamesinoregon1081
@jamesinoregon1081 Жыл бұрын
@@TrackandBuild Thank you. Yes interesting. The oil pressure stays very consistent (around 66psi) in that Honda video whether on throttle or not. This makes me wonder if that gauge is giving an averaged pressure? I know that in my 1le camaro the oil pressure would go from 35 in the paddock to 45 at low rpm turns to 75 psi or higher on full throttle depending on engine operating temperature (first lap vs 8th lap). Hmm. would a 0w40 oil help balance it? Is your pressure guage "too sensitive"? Dang I love science and research.

It's hard to interpret you lateral G's. Do you have any numbers? What about deceleration (seeing as how KB says the timing cover can load up with surging oil)? I track my 2022 BRZ (see my "Track Day" videos). Among other things, I have a 19 row oil cooler. My AEM 30-4407 0-150 PSI Oil Pressure Gauge is tapping into where the plug was right in front of the throttle body connector. That's a primary gallery or passage to the oil filter? Though I can't keep my eyes on the gauge at all times, when I'm between 2K and 7,500K the pressure is from 80-130 PSI and cold idle is at 113. I run Motul Sport 5-40. I'm hitting 1.3 G's and briefly higher. I run 245/40/17 Goodyear F1 Supercar 3S tires and aero. I run a Catalyst and before an Aim Evo4S. I just don't see low pressure readings. I do intend to data log or at least video the gauge during a future run. I've got 12+ track days on my car and I turn respectable lap times. I'm an ex-SCCA racer. I've a Greddy baffle plate for the next time I pull off the pan. I took it off and found the usually excess of sealant, but none had made it to the inlet yet. Thanks for the video and data!
